BOONE, NC — Kyle Hines scored a career-high 23 points to lead UNC Greensboro to an 84-79 win over Appalachian State. Hines connected on his first eight shots from the field and finished the afternoon 11-for-13. It was the second 20-point game of the season for the freshman from Sickerlville, NJ. Ray Bristow added a season-high 20 points for UNCG. UNCG, off to its best overall start in 10 years, moved to 9-4 overall. It is the first time since 1999-2000 that UNCG started the SoCon season with two wins. The Spartans won for the fourth time in their last five trips to Boone and snapped Appalachian State’s six-game home winning streak. The Mountaineers started out quickly, scoring the game’s first eight points. UNCG battled back from the early deficit to tie the game, 22-22, after Dustin Everette’s conventional three-point play. Appalachian State opened up a three-point lead before UNCG stormed back and took its first lead of the game, 30-28, on Josh Gross’ putback with 5:33 left in the first half. The teams see-sawed back and forth from there with UNCG taking a 40-37 lead into the locker room behind Hines’ 12 first-half points and Bristow’s 10. Hines shot 6-for-6 from the floor in the first half. The Spartans held that lead despite the fact that Ronnie Burrell was held scoreless and took just one shot from the field and Ricky Hickman, who entered the game right behind Burrell at 16.6 ppg, was just 1-for-5 from the field and scored just two points in the first half. Burrell didn’t score until the 10:26 mark of the second half and finished with just eight points, but did have a career-high five assists to go with 10 rebounds. UNCG took control early in the second half. With 15:29 to play, Josh Gross knocked down a three-pointer from the top of the key to give UNCG a 50-43 advantage. After Chris McFarland scored on a jumper for Appalachian State, Hickman converted a four-point playwhen he knocked down a three-pointer from the left corner and was fouled. After a UNCG stop on the other end, Gross putback Hines’ first miss of the afternoon to give the Spartans their first double-digit lead of the game. After an ASU timeout, Hines converted a conventional three-point play to give UNCG its biggest lead of the day at 59-45. The Mountaineers, however, made a oneman run when Nathan Cranford knocked down a pair of three-pointers from the right corner, the second of which he converted into a four-point play after he was fouled, to pull within seven. UNCG maintained its seven-point for most of the next eight minutes, but Appalachian State made a run with three minutes to play. Demetrius Scott drained a three-pointer with 1:58 to play, capping a 6-0 run to cut the UNCG lead to three, 7572. After a UNCG timeout, Bristow was called for an offensive foul trying to break the Mountaineers’ full-court pressure. However, the Mountaineers couldn’t convert as Derek Thomas was called for an offensive foul trying to put back a Mountaineer miss. After that, the Spartans knocked down 9-of-10 from the line in the final 1:50 to clinch the victory.

GREENVILLE, SC -- Furman University used a red-hot shooting first half and then held on through a couple of late runs on to defeat UNC Greensboro, 82-65. Ray Bristow led UNCG with 18 points, including four three-pointers. Ronnie Burrell added 15 points and Ricky Hickman chipped in with 14 points and five steals. With the loss, UNCG fell to 9-5, 2-1 in Southern Conference play. The Spartans were trying to open conference play 3-0 for the first time since moving to the SoCon. Furman raised its record to 9-6, 2-1 in SoCon action. Much like UNCG’s game at Appalachian State two days earlier, the Spartans started out slowly at Furman. UNCG made just two field goals in the first seven minutes and falling behind early, 15-5. Furman came into the game as the nation’s leader in three-point field goals with 152, having made 10 or more three-pointers in seven of 14 games and shooting a SoCon best 44.2 percent from behind the arc. After establishing an inside game with Moussa Diagne (12 first-half points) in the early going, the Paladins knocked down 5-of-8 from behind the three-point line over the final 12:54 of the first half and stretched their lead to 41-21 at halftime. The Paladins got every bounce in the first 20 minutes, outrebounding UNCG, 23-8, in the first half and shooting 56 percent to the Spartans’ 35 percent. The Spartans started to make a run midway through the second half. UNCG ran off six straight points to gain some momentum and cut the deficit to 18. Forcing turnovers with their full-court pressure, the Spartans cut the Furman lead to 65-51 with just over five minutes to play to make things interesting. But UNCG could get no closer than 14 points as Furman remained unbeaten at home this season (6-0) and ran its homecourt winning streak to eight consecutive games. Tony Carter and Robby Bostain led Furman with 18 and 17 points, respectively, to lead four Paladins in double-figures. Diagne also added 16 points and eight rebounds. The Paladins wound up 9-for-19 from three-point range and shot 50 percent (30-for-60) from the field overall on the evening. The home team has won all eight regular-season meetings in the series.

GREENSBORO, NC – Kyle Hines recorded his conference-leading seventh double-double of the season with 20 points and 12 rebounds as UNC Greensboro won its ninth consecutive game at Fleming Gymnasium, 66-54, over Western Carolina in Southern Conference men’s basketball action. UNCG, which became 7-0 on the season when holding opponents under 70 points and won its 13th straight when doing so dating back to December 2004, jumped all over the Catamounts early. Western Carolina made its first shot of the game, a layup by Corey Muirhead at 19:27, and then proceeded to miss its next 16 shots from the field. The Catamounts also committed six turnovers during a 10:02 scoreless span. It wasn’t until the 9:25 mark when David Berghoefer made a lay-up that Western Carolina scored again. Before that, UNCG had scored 15 unanswered points. Western Carolina closed to within seven with an 8-2 run, but UNCG scored 11 of the final 16 points of the half to take a 13-point lead into the locker room. UNCG took control midway through the second half and opened its largest lead of the game. Leading 36-24, the Spartans went on a 13-5 run, capped off by Josh Gross’ three-pointer, to give UNCG a 49-29 advantage. The Catamounts went on a run late to make things interesting. Trailing by 18 with 3:08 to go, Western scored nine of the next 12 points to close to within 12 with 1:09 to play. But UNCG made 4-of-6 at the line in the final minute and Hines added a dunk to put an exclamation point on the victory. Along with Hines’ third 20-point game of the season, Burrell added 11 points and Ray Bristow, who moved back into the starting line-up for the first time since November, chipped in 14 points and three steals. Hines, the No. 2 shot blocker in the nation, had four blocked shots to give him 60 blocked shots on the season. Hines, a native of Sickerville, NJ and product of Timber Creek HS, became only the second Spartan in UNCG’s Division I era to block 60 shots in a season. Western Carolina had two players with double-doubles. David Berghoefer led the Catamounts 17 points and 12 rebounds. Corey Muirhead chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Rans Brempong, the Southern Conference career blocked shot leader, tied a school-record with seven blocks.
