This has been an experience that I could never have anywhere else. CMSP benefits us at the right time in our lives because it helps us find our niche at UNC as minority males. The program has also given me the foundation that I need to overcome any obstacle that may come between me and my goals. I’m confident that with the continuing support of this amazing program— I can’t go anywhere but up. Orlando Mendoza 2013 CMSP Transfer Scholar

carolina millennial scholars program

Carolina Millennial Scholars Program

The (cmsp) is a cohort program aimed at engaging, recruiting, retaining, and supporting African American, American Indian, and Latino males through graduation and beyond. CMSP targets exceptional first-year undergraduate and transfer ethnic minority males and connects students with the institution in ways that lead to greater involvement in high-impact activities, personal and professional growth, continual persistence, and eventually, successful completion of their undergraduate degrees. CMSP is enriching the journey for these student-scholars! CMSP is designed to support every aspect of the student’s academic, cultural, professional, and social development. By focusing on the intersecting experiences of a college student, CMSP offers a dynamic, integrated approach to navigating the Carolina experience. CMSP Scholars become prepared to solve the world’s problems.

CMSP Objectives 1. Increase the overall learning experience for minority males 2. Increase persistence and graduation rates among minority male first-year and transfer students 3. Facilitate the participation of minority males in high-impact activities (e.g., study abroad and undergraduate research) 4. Assist minority males in forming institutional, community, and corporate connections 5. Provide professional, academic, social, and cultural development 6. Engage and recruit minority male youth (K-12) and community college students 7. Create a diverse and inclusive campus climate

The Carolina Millennial Scholars Program creates a space for minority males to define their leadership skills that can be applied to the Carolina community and beyond. The program created a network in which I grew and learned from other students, professionals, and educators. It also challenged me to move outside my comfort zone during my first year of college which allowed me to think about my place as a minority male in this world. Marty Davidson 2013 CMSP First-Year Scholar
