Gala Guest of Honor

Dr. Christy Copper ‘91 Dr. Christine Copper is a Professor of Chemistry and the NCAA Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) at the United States Naval Academy (USNA). A national leader, Copper is the FAR representative on the NCAA Division I Board of Directors and the Division I National Student-Athlete Advisory Committee. She co-chaired the NCAA working group on Values-Based Revenue Distribution that brought historic change to the NCAA’s financial distribution model by including academic incentives for the first time ever. Dr. Copper was a three-time All-American collegiate tennis player and a member of two national championship teams at the University of Mary Washington, where she earned a B.S. degree in chemistry. Copper graduated with honors and cum laude, and was named National Senior Player of the Year. She has been a Champion Level member of the Eagle Club since the booster club was officially launched in 2013. She earned a Ph.D. degree in analytical chemistry from the University of Tennessee in 1995. She has been on the faculty of the Naval Academy since 1995 and remains active in undergraduate teaching and research, recently winning the USNA Class of 1951 Civilian Faculty Teaching Excellence Award. Dr. Copper chairs the Patriot League Policy Committee and is an active participant in the governance of the American Athletic Conference. In her nine years as the FAR at Navy, she has been instrumental in making improvements to the areas of institutional control of athletics and student-athlete well-being on both her campus and at the conference and national levels.

Hometown: Meadville, Pennsylvania Plans post grad: I am beginning my career in Fredericksburg as a client service associate with the Clendenin/Stewart Wealth Management Team at Cary Street Partners. Favorite UMW athletic achievement: Starting at three doubles for the first time my senior year OR winning a golden match

Hometown: Richmond, Virginia Plans post grad: I am working for GEICO in the Management Development Program for the Claims Department. Favorite UMW athletic achievement: Starting in both singles and doubles all four years here at Mary Washington.

Hometown: Plano, Texas. Plans post grad: I plan on going to Richmond to work in the governor’s office for the summer with the Governor Fellows Program or complete a fellowship in New Hampshire with Let America Vote. Favorite UMW athletic achievement: My favorite athletic achievement was winning a conference title in the 800 free relay as a freshman and helping my team take home 4 consecutive CAC Men’s Swimming Championships.


Hometown: Stafford, Virginia. Plans post grad: I plan to either play professionally overseas or go to work in the field of digital marketing, graphic design, or film production. Favorite UMW athletic achievement: Favorite athletic achievement is when I scored my 1,000th point at the tip-off tournament.

Hometown: Virginia Beach, VA Plans post grad: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Corps Favorite UMW athletic achievement: Becoming an All-American in doubles and singles

Hometown: Alexandria, VA Plans post grad: Working for ESRI doing Geospatial Analysis and Business Development Favorite UMW athletic achievement: Winning Conferences all 4 years at UMW, and going to Puerto Rico with the swim team every year.


Hometown: Woodbridge, VA Plans post grad: I plan to gain experience in the field of digital marketing and communication before I perform professional Polynesian dancing on cruise ships traveling the South Pacific Favorite UMW athletic achievement: Winning the Come Back Athlete of the Year Award after I lead my team in batting avg. after coming back from a serious injury.

Hometown: McLean, Virginia Plans post grad: I will be attending law school at the University of Minnesota. Favorite UMW athletic achievement: Being named the "Female ScholarAthlete of the year" for 2017-18 was definitely my favorite achievement because it was a culmination of the hard work I have put into athletics and academics.

Hometown: Falls Church, VA. Plans post grad: I plan on volunteering overseas for 6 months with Birth Right Armenia. Favorite UMW athletic achievement: My favorite athletic achievement was being selected to the AllCAC team my senior year for field hockey.


Hometown: Fredericksburg, VA Plans post grad: I have been applying to be a D3 assistant field hockey coach Favorite UMW athletic achievement: Being selected first team All Region after my senior season!

Hometown: Westminster, PA Plans post grad: Work with the Navy Favorite UMW athletic achievement: Going to the CAC championship final game this season and advancing to the 3rd round in the NCAA Tournament (this weekend!)

Hometown: Baltimore, Maryland Plans post grad: Either be a graduate assistant for a basketball program or get a job in the business field. Favorite UMW athletic achievement: Winning a CAC Championship with my team and going to the NCAA tournament twice.
