UNIVERSITY OF MIAMI

PUBLIC HEALTH SCIENCES Preparing students for a public health career. It's what we do.

WHAT IS PUBLIC HEALTH?

Public Health is the science of protecting and improving the health of communities through education, promotion of healthy lifestyles, and research for disease and injury prevention. Public health professionals analyze the effect on health of genetics, personal choice, and the environment in order to develop programs that protect the health of your family and community.

THIS IS A PUBLIC HEALTH MOMENT

LOVE QUOTES

"From economic development to education, good health is the necessary underpinning for every other social good. Over the course of the 20th century, global life expectancy soared by 30 years, 25 of which are attributed to public health. Yet progress has been distributed unevenly across the world. This makes public health research indispensable as the most potent motor for further advancement. The potential for shared learning among countries, of the type that the University of Miami can help to systematize and disseminate, is emblematic of the interdependence that is at the heart of public health."

Julio Frenk, MD, PhD, MPH President and Professor University of Miami

BIOSTATISTICS Biostatistics is the branch of statistics responsible for interpreting data to solve problems in biology, medicine, and public health. Biostatisticians are interested in how data, population studies, and health intersect.

WE PROVIDE A FLEXIBLE CURRICULUM ALLOWING YOU TO FOCUS ON AN AREA OF INTEREST THROUGH GROUPED ELECTIVES AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING.

ENVIRONMENT & PUBLIC HEALTH Environmental health examines the role the environment plays in the health of individuals and populations. Environmental scientists address the health implications that environmental risk factors (e.g., water and air pollutants) pose to population health.

EPIDEMIOLOGY & POPULATION HEALTH SCIENCES Epidemiology is the study of trends, patterns, and determinants related to disease in populations. Epidemiologists design and implement studies which provide evidence to help understand the causality and solutions to preventing disease.

HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH & POLICY Health services and policy is a multidisciplinary field concerned with the delivery, quality, and cost of health care. Experts in this field are interested in the complex structures of health care delivery, legality and ethics, and policy processes designed to improve health care access.

PREVENTION SCIENCE & COMMUNITY HEALTH Prevention professionals work in partnership with communities to understand the risks and protective factors that must be targeted to improve health and prevent disease. They then use that understanding to develop, adapt, evaluate, and disseminate preventive interventions.

WE ADVANCE POPULATION HEALTH THROUGH THE DISSEMINATION OF GROUND BREAKING DISCOVERIES WHILE TRAINING THE NEXT GENERATION OF PUBLIC HEALTH PROFESSIONALS.
