The Most Common Types Of High-Quality Industrial Hoses •

Industrial hoses are an essential part of nearly every piece of machinery in a range of industries. The hoses must be able to withstand constant use, physical impacts and high levels of pressure and heat. Some also have to withstand corrosive substances that would normally destroy a consumer-grade hose. This has resulted in a number of hoses that are produced using unique manufacturing techniques that harden materials and improve the overall strength of the unit. There are four common types of high-quality industrial hoses in use.


Rubber •

Rubber hoses are very common in applications that do not involve high levels of heat or pressure. They are commonly used to move temperate liquids, small particles and even air. Good quality rubber hoses usually have some type of fiber or mesh worked into the material for extra strength. These reinforced rubber hoses are frequently seen in hydraulic systems that have moderate amounts of pressure. Rubber tends to be very cost-effective and is readily available.


Stainless Steel • Stainless steel industrial hoses are usually made from braided materials. They frequently include matching durable fittings on the ends. Braided stainless steel hoses can withstand very high levels of pressure. The stainless steel does not normally burst or break. It is also resistant to the high levels of heat that are sometimes generated by industrial machinery and motors. One drawback is that some larger stainless steel hoses do not have the same flexibility as rubber or other types of hoses. This limits their use in tight spaces where it is necessary to thread the hose through different components.


Thermoplastic • Thermoplastic industrial hoses are made from a versatile polymer resin. The plastic is very lightweight and flexible. It is also recyclable. Manufacturers can incorporate a number of additives into the plastic in order to provide different properties. The hoses are commonly seen in material handling systems. They are used in agriculture to move fertilizers. They are also seen in liquid handling applications on the ends of pumps or suction devices.


Thermoplastic •

Thermoplastic is popular in the food industry as a way to move different ingredients between processing equipment. The hoses can even be treated to handle oil. Although thermoplastic is flexible and can handle abrasive materials, it has very little heat resistance. Additionally, the hoses can become brittle in very cold temperatures if they are not specially treated.


Interlock • Interlock hoses are made by connecting a coil of metal in order to form a cylindrical shape. Some hoses include a packing material between the coils in order to create airtight seals. The primary advantage of this type of hose is the high resistance to pressure. Interlock hoses can handle the highest levels of pressure although they do still have operational tolerances that cannot be exceeded.


Interlock •

The main drawback is that the hoses will lose flexibility as the strength of the coils increases. Interlock hoses are commonly used to deal with exhaust fumes. They can also be seen on cyclone feeders and in fuel transfer systems. They sometimes appear on boilers as part of an emergency pressure release mechanism.
