From the Director I had not read The Winter’s Tale since studying for my English A Level exam in the late 70’s. I remember being enchanted by it and not much else. I retained some idea of Pastoral but had erased the mad jealousy of Leontes that at that time paled next to that of Othello from our other required text. The latter character has become synonymous with jealousy but I am now completely caught up in The Winter’s Tale’s variations on the theme. The seeds for The Tempest are markedly present too. The Clown is Miranda and Trinculo. Perdita and Florizel combine to be Ferdinand. And Camillo might be the cousin of Gonzalo. Othello, The Winter’s Tale and The Tempest are perhaps like stepping-stones that show us the path from blind, mad jealousy that must be punished to the acceptance that what might be a fatal flaw could be forgiven. All three plays reveal the fragility of power when tested against a righteous moral force. But I think that, as with All’s Well That Ends Well, we must be wary of the “happy” ending. We may forgive but not forget. With forgetfulness we are condemned to commit our sins anew. — Malcolm Tulip, February 2, 2017

About William Shakespeare William Shakespeare was born on April 23, 1564, and most likely attended the King's New School until he was about 15. There is no record of him attending university. At 18, he married 26-year-old Anne Hathaway, with whom he had three children. In 1592, he established himself as an actor and playwright in London. Between 1592 and 1611, he wrote 37 plays. Shakespeare retired to Stratford in 1610, where he lived comfortably as a country gentleman until his death on April 23, 1616.
