Meet Preview: In what happens to the be the closest meet to campus at a mere 25 minutes, this is one’s best chance to see your favorite Retriever take the track as the entire healthy roster will take to the track in multiple events. In a meet that is a build-up to the final three meets, this represents the last chance for fine tuning before the competition kicks into high gear.

Featured Athlete: Trae Proctor

The sprint crew made large advances last meet including the school record performance of Trae Proctor in the 60m Hurdles, another great outing by Mercedes Jackson and the quick rise up the Conference and All Time UMBC Rankings by Kirsten Jones, Paulette Fogle, and D’Nique Phillip. Look for continued success from this crew as well as more high level Conference performances from Briana Young, Kalane Abbey, and Niko Coaxum. With flu ravaging the distance ranks a few of the recovered will return to action as few will continue to recoup over the weekend. Returning to action are Jake Albino and Andrew Smith who will be looking to take advantage of the flat track conversions in the mile and 800 meters respectively. A good event to watch out for will be the women’s 800m where Sarah Daly, Cody Mezebish, and MK Kulp will look to continue their strong outings from last weekend. The entire throws crew will enter the circle this weekend after a skeleton crew in New York. Transfer Yao Adantor and Thor Serafenas will look to continue to make an immediate impact in both events as senior Cameron McDearmon returns after a rest weekend. Amanda Deller will look to extend her continual season improvements while the fast improving Emma Mayne and the freshmen look to move up the Conference Charts. Aboshioma Obemeata will now look towards the 49 foot barrier in the triple jump after reaching 48 feet last weekend.

Trae Proctor shattered the school record with a 7.89 mark in the 60m Hurdles Mercedes Jackson nearly matched her school record with a 7.43 mark in the 60m dash D’Nique Phillip moved up to #3 All Time and tied for 2nd in the Conference rankings. Paulette Fogle ran 1:14.96 and Kirsten Jones ran 1:15.5 to move up to #3 and #4 All Time in the 500 meters. Yao Adantor finished third in the shot and seventh in the weight, while Thor Serafenas debuted in both events to finished ninth and seventh respectively. Hassan Omar moved up to #8 All Time in the 5k with a 15:15 Angel Bucci moved up to #9 All Time in the 3k with a 10:23.37 Julie Gessler move up to #10 All Time in the 5k with a 18:27.42 Sarah Daly moved up #6 All Time in the 800m with a 2:16 Aboshioma Obemeata qualified for the IC4A in the triple jump with a 48-3.25 PR

Sometimes the hurdles that one needs to get over are of the metaphoric variety, as with the case of Trae Proctor’s flirtation with the sub eight second 60m hurdles. However, he ensured there would be no similar hurdle with 7.9 seconds as he skipped it all together by running a personal best and school record 7.89 seconds.

Angel Bucci: Right out of the gates, freshman Angel Bucci made a mark in her first cross country meet by finishing a close second on the team with a personal best for two miles. However, she had a setback when she was diagnosed a week later with a stress fracture that curtailed the rest of her cross country season. After rehabbing and building back up her endurance she has quickly made a mark through two meets thus far, moving into the Top 10 All Time on the 3,000 meter list with a 10:23.37 mark at the New York City Gotham Cup. While just really getting back into the swing of things, expect to see a continued drop off as the season reaches its peak.

Yao Adantor: After originally attending Morgan State, Yao transferred to Maryland, only to have the program cut. Intending to continue his athletic career, he transferred to UMBC where has already begun to set personal best indoor marks in both the shot put and the weight throw. His performances thus far have moved him up to #2 All Time in the Shot Put and #6 All Time in the Weight Throw. With a mark this past summer over fifty-three feet, he should be flirting with the school record in the shot, while climbing up the weight throw list as he trains more in an unfamiliar event.

Inside the Numbers: The amount of seconds subtracted from a male runner’s 15:00 5k performance, if run on a flat track based on the new conversion standards, thus resulting in a 14:50.46 mark on the Conference, IC4A, and National Rankings.
