While numerous Conference Meets have been held on campus over the past decade, it’s been ten years since the Big Dawg Invitational was last run (there was a later attempt that was cancelled due to weather reminiscent of this past Monday). But this Saturday, the Retrievers will be reviving the home track advantage in a small meet held on campus. With every healthy body on the roster entered in at least one event, this represents your best opportunity to come down to campus and cheer on your Retrievers. In regards to the sprinting events, fans of the program should keep an eye on two things. The first is the sheer depth on the women’s side of the program that extends five or six deep of potential Conference point scorers. Each of the three sprinting events features at least five athletes who have either scored at the America East meet or at least made the finals of an event. For the men, look for the development of athletes after Denny Long crosses the line. Both Dosu Teyibo and Pat Balderson made the finals of the 60 meter dash at the AEC meet, Trae Proctor is looking to extend his range beyond the hurdles, and Kyle Baker narrowly missed out on the finals when the Conference was last held on campus. The distance events will give you an opportunity to see the range that the athletes have with many athletes running outside their primary event. The meet will kick off with the steeple which will have Vinny DiSalvo (#5 All Time) returning to the outdoor track for the first time since his freshman year, while freshmen Redatu Semeon and Austin Hayslett will make their debut. The 800 meter specialists can be found in the 1500 meters (Smith and Keresztes), or the 400 meters (Daly and Mezebish), or even the 400 meter hurdles (Kulp). While most of the athletes in the 5,000 meters will be pacing out for the 10,000 meters next weekend, look for Brandan McGee and Tommy Eldridge to make their track season debuts after injuries and Jake Albino running for his first time in this event. If you are fans of the throwing events, then this is a great opportunity to get out and see the athletes compete as three of the throwing events (discus, hammer, and javelin) can be found on the upper fields and the shot put only a short walk away inside the stadium. If your goal is to see every athlete, then the discus will be the place to be as the entire throws unit will compete. In addition, if you want to see everyone throw within their specialty, you will not be disappointed as all the best will compete in their best event.

Thor Serafenas

While most of the meet was washed out by storms, Thor Serafenas managed to make the most of the trip moving up to #2 All Time in the hammer and even recording the #8 All Time performance in the discus. With more favorable conditions (weather and field qualify) predicted for this weekend, the school record in the hammer could be put on notice.
