The Retrievers return to the George Mason Spring Invitational for the first time in three years, a meet which has evolved from a low key affair into one of the most competitive meets in the Mid-Atlantic. At this point the Outdoor Track and Field teams are only three weeks away from the America East Conference Championships in Binghamton and this meet represents one of the last two times to secure seed times. For the men, Denny Long holds the top 100 meters and 200 meters times in the Conference amongst runners allowed to compete at the AEC Meet (Boston Univ. is barred from competition). Last weekend, he set a personal best 10.78 in the 100 meter dash which shows he is beginning to round into form over the last couple weekends of the season. Trae Proctor has struggled thus far through the first couple meets, though last weekend he set a season’s best of 14.57 in the 110 meter hurdles moving up to second in the Conference and within .17 of the school record. In the 800 meters, Andrew Smith and Andrew Keresztes will look to garner IC4A qualifications and take the top two spots in the Conference rankings. At Duke, Keresztes ran 1:52.40 to move up to #2 All Time in UMBC History and take control of the Conference lead. The 5,000 meters will feature Hassan Omar, fresh off a #2 All Time and IC4A performance in the 10,000 meters. He will be looking to move up in the record books and become only the fifth Retriever to go under 15 minutes in the 5,000 meters. In the field events, throws become the marquee events, with UMBC athletes littering the leader boards. Sophomore transfer Thor Serafenas leads Championship th eligible athletes in both the hammer and the discus while having the 6 best shot put in the Conference. Yao Adantor is third in the Conference in the shot and has moved up to third in the discus and fifth in the hammer rankings. Finally, freshman Vincent Rentzsch leads the Conference in the javelin. All three have taken down school records in their events and can be expected to improve upon those marks as the season reaches its peak. On the women’s side, Mercedes Jackson continues her consistent excellence throughout the year holding commanding leads over her competition in the 100 meters and the 200 meters, an event where she is almost a full second ahead of second. Paulette Fogle will look to continue her success from last weekend where she set personal best times in both the 400 meter hurdles and the 400 meter dash. The 400 meter dash will be a strong event for the Retrievers with indoor record holder Kirsten Jones running after a couple weeks off from the event. Joining her will be fellow All Time Top Ten athletes Kalane Abbey, Briana Young, and freshmen D’Nique Phillips who should join them at any point. Like the men, the 800 meters will be a th strong event, with Sarah Daly and Cody Mezebish taking the lead currently sitting 4 th and 9 in the Conference rankings. While ECAC qualifiers in the 10,000 meters, Nicole Dawson and Harmony Roche will try to get under eighteen minutes in the 5,000 meters. With Amanda Deller resting up for the Penn Relays, watch for the younger members of the throws crew to step into the spotlight. Junior Emma Mayne will lead the freshmen duo of Nmeoma Edokobi and Jen Nelson through the shot, hammer and discus. In the jumps, Ebonique Jones will be looking to regain the form that led to a second place finish in the long jump while freshman Caitlyn Davis will open up her outdoor season in the pole vault and triple jump.

Hassan Omar

Throughout the year, Hassan Omar has been making larger and larger impacts as he progresses through each season. He started off the year finishing 20th at the AEC Cross Country championships. Then followed it up with a 5th place finish at the AEC Indoor Meet in the 5k. Now Omar has opened up the outdoor campaign with an IC4A qualifying, AEC leading, and #2 All Time 10k, which was essentially a solo run the last 5k.

After a rough start to open the outdoor season, sophomore Paulette Fogle quickly rebounded to have a stellar two-days at the Duke Invite this past weekend. She opened up in the Friday session by bettering her school record in the 400 meter hurdles, reducing it to 1:01.64, almost a month before the peak in the season. She then followed it up with a #5 All Time 56.82 400 meter dash the next day and led off the 4x400 meters in a high 55, low 56 second split. Her 400 meter hurdle time qualifies her for the ECAC Championships, and leaves her a little over a second off the fringe of qualifying for the NCAA Preliminary Rounds with most of the season to go.

A solid and quiet contributor throughout the year, freshman Nicole Dawson was usually the second Retriever across the line throughout the cross country season. During indoor she dropped her personal best from high school by nearly two minutes in the 5k finishing up the year with the 10th fastest time in school history in 18:17. Then, after pacing through the first meet of the year, she opened up in her first 10k ever, managing to hit even splits for twenty-three consecutive laps en route to the third fastest 10k in school history in 37:22. With the 10k being her focus at the Conference meet, look for here to work on her speed over the next two weeks in the 5k.
