The Centurion who approached Jesus for the healing of his servant, presents a positive challenge to all of us, to humble ourselves. The Centurion was a man of faith, as he believed in the power of Christ before seeing the miracles. The centurion, a man in authority placed himself under the authority of Jesus and felt he was not worthy to have the Son of God enter his house. Again, we see the extraordinary godliness of this man. His behaviour and approach was completely different to the Jewish leaders who were proud and lofty in their approach. The Centurion was a man of great status and wealth, yet he humbled himself in 3 areas: 1. He showed compassion to a servant. He demonstrated his knowledge of God’s love by extending deep sympathy for his suffering servant. 2. The Centurion believed in Jesus’ power. Although he was a gentile, he decided to approach Jesus, a Jew. Here is a Gentile who really understands and recognizes Jesus for who He is. 3. He was generous. He was a generous man and had built a synagogue so that he could worship the one true God with the Jews.
