“ Bringing things back to life [...] to switch our perspective from the endless shuttling back and forth from image to object and from object to image, that is such a pronounced feature of academic writing in the fields of anthropology, archaeology, art and architecture, to the material flows and currents of sensory awareness in which images and objects reciprocally take shape.” Tim Ingold, “Making: Anthropology, Archaeology, Art and Architecture” (Forthcoming)

The workshop will investigate and explore the possibilities and limits of wood construction to generate an architectural experience of silence, intimacy and comfort. In the framework of a collaboration with Martinsons Group AB, and in order to improve the existing room facilities at UMA, this integrated technology and design workshop will focus on the development of a sound-proof seminar room: a silent room. The design shall be capable of affording the necessary comfort for a room of such conditions (i.e. temperature, air renewal) as well as optimal structural stability and economy. The proposal must also ensure ease of construction: the room will be built within a week in a follow-up workshop in May 2014. The design must be also conceived in order to optimize the use of materials and the performance of the room as a “silent/reading atmosphere”. A limited amount of resources and a strict budget are also fixed requirements to comply with. The design must be developed as a radical experiment with the aim of exploring and testing unexpected possibilities of wood constructions and class-room architectures. In that sense, our room will be a floating ‘quiet gift’ to the school and will not occupy or interfere with any of the existing floor-areas. Access to our room will be developed in relationship to a movable seating platform/device which will be also thought as a multifunctional social space. Subsequent LiAi reading seminars might be developed in our new room ;-)
