LENTEN WORSHIP U2 Eucharist – a Parish Service of Communion and Worship Holy Thursday & Holy Saturday (April 5th and 7th) -7 p.m. in Faith’s Sanctuary (12th & Eddy) The U2 Eucharist will feature music from U2 including such favorites as Where the Streets Have No Name, Yahweh, I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For, Pride (In the Name of Love), Mysterious Ways and Walk On. The U2 Eucharist has recently received international media attention, from newspapers to BBC World Service presentations, for its innovative use of the band’s biblically rich lyrics and social justice message, for its ability to bring together people of may different generations in a context of worship, and as a tool for raising awareness and empowering communities to respond to God’s call. Google “U2 Eucharist” or “U2charist” for articles in papers around the world. Come be part of the service and invite a friend who would enjoy the combination of U2 music with worship.

CONFIRMATION RETREAT CHANGE
Thanks to the many generous folks who gave JEWELS OF LOVE. We received a wonderful variety of pieces. Fifteen people participated in this month's MISSION MARKETPLACE to make jewelry and remake JEWELS OF LOVE. Thanks to Barb Brown for her beading supplies, time, and talents! So far over $150 have been raised for UM4GI HIV/AIDS Funds. We will sell again March 11. Several items are up for Silent Auction as well--be sure to check it all out Sunday, March 11.
As has already been announced to Confirmands and parents, the previously planned Confirmation Retreat has been rescheduled. The Confirmands are now invited to join in in a Confirmation Lock-In at Trinity UMC beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, March 30th and continuing to 7 p.m. on Saturday, March 31st. Attendees should arrive at Trinity UMC at 7pm having already eaten supper. Meals for the remainder of the Lock-In will be provided.
Also on March 11, be sure to try our MINI MISSION MARKETPLACE. Pay $5 and make your own beaded bracelet in the Gathering Place! Upcoming Mission Marketplace plans: March-pottery, April--Earth Day projects, May--MotherDaughter-Grandmother Simple Sewn Mom Gifts. Mark your calendars!
SUMMER MINISTRY INTERNSHIP UM4GI is now taking applications for two Summer Ministry Internships. These paid internships are for post high school students who are considering church or human services related careers. More information and application forms are available from the church office.
WEDNESDAY MEALS ARE BACK! Wednesday Meals are back but I have discovered that groceries cost more than they did a year and half ago. Unless a group is serving the meal as a fund raiser, we are just trying to break even on these meals. In the past we suggested a donation of at least $3 per person or $10 for a family. We aren’t breaking even so far this year. If you want to see these meals continue and are able to, I hope you will give a little more. Jay Wednesday meals are served in Miller Hall each Wednesday from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. February 29: Second Annual Kiwanis Soup Supper Fundraiser - Serving Homemade Chili, Chicken Noodle, Cinnamon rolls, Gluten-free chicken noodle soup available! Serving 5 to 7:00 p.m. Adults $5, Children (under 12) $3. Proceeds will be used to benefit children in our community! March 7: Enchiladas, tortilla chips, salad, ice-cream March 14: Tater-tot casserole, fruit, ice-cream
Please bring sleeping bags, pillows, toiletries, appropriate changes of clothes, games, and a snack to share. Please do not bring any electronic devices like iPods, iPads, MP3 players, or anything that will distract from the community. Contact Pastors Bob or Matt with any questions. The Wesley brothers had it right, I think. They went to where people were, to where life and all of its challenges seemed most present. They went outside the church and met the people and their circumstances. John preached outside and Charles (arguably, though I’ve already made this point) wrote song lyrics to popular pub songs. And they reached people!
In an effort to meet people where they are, I will be starting a once-monthly faith-talk in the community beginning on Thursday, March 15th at 8 p.m. at Nathan Detroit on Pine Street downtown. DRAUGHTS OF FAITH is an opportunity to talk about faith and theology in an informal setting in the community. Please come as you are, invite friends, and be spiritually fed!
GRANT SCHOLARSHIP TIME The 2012 Grant Scholarship applications for graduating high school seniors who are confirmed members of Trinity have been sent out and are due in the church office by March 23, 2012. If you are a post secondary student who is a confirmed member of Trinity, and have not received a post secondary grant scholarship, you are also eligible. Grant applications are available in the church office and the deadline to turn them in is March 23, 2012.

NEW CHURCH DATABASE
THANK YOU FROM NOAH’S ARK
We are in the midst of switching to a new database, Church Windows, for church membership and financial records. Because our financial records are in transition, we do not have a financial report for January. We expect to publish a summary report for the first two months in the next issue of the Tidings. Thanks for patience with us as we learn a new system.
I would like to thank everyone for attending the Wednesday Night Fundraiser Meal for Noah’s Ark Child Care! As the director it makes my heart happy to see such support from the church congregation for our ministry of Trinity United Methodist Church! I don’t know each of you but I continue to keep each and everyone of you in my prayers and thoughts. Thank you again for all your support and donations to Noah’s Ark Child Care. May God Bless you! Vicky

REQUEST FOR PRAYERS Some Nuba people from Sudan have been worshipping at Trinity for 7 years now. There has been outreach to them in terms of Sunday School for the children and Jay's participation & support in their worship services and other events. Lately the Arab/ Muslim government of Northern Sudan has increased the bombings on Nuba mountain, where family members of our Nuba congregation still live. The reason for this is to have access to the oil fields in this area. Arms to the Northern Sudan government have been supplied by China, Russia, and the US in the past. The people aren't allowed to leave the mountain and the goal is to eradicate them. Please pray for these Nuba families in Sudan and our own city. Also, offer your support in ministry to them and their children here at Trinity. For more information, visit www.SudanReeves.org Carole Denton, Missions

FROM A PASTOR A few weeks ago, I spoke in worship about three simple steps to change the world. If you recall, the essence of changing the world is in serving the world! This is scriptural, not only in the text from that weekend (Mark 1:29-39) but also in Jesus teaching in the Gospel of John. After washing the disciples’ feet, Jesus tells them that they should serve one another as he has served them. “For I have set you an example, that you also should do as I have done to you.” (John 13:15 NRSV) It is right and appropriate to be in service to one another both here in the church and in the community. Opportunities abound in both areas, and our Missions groups are hard at work putting together service options in the community. In terms of serving your fellow congregation members, consider serving in the Church office, as an usher or greeter, as small group leader with Awaken or during our Wednesday meals, as a Sunday School teacher, or see any of your Pastors with other ideas. Just as I do, I think you will feel nourished and energized in responding to Jesus’ call to serve one another!
AWAKEN ANEW AWAKEN has returned in its new format! AWAKEN is a fellowship, devotion, and learning experience offered as a ministry of the UM4GI parish. Now held at Trinity UMC on Wednesdays, Awaken begins with a meal at 5:30 p.m. followed by Worship and then Small Group ministries at 6:30 p.m. Infant care is available as well as children's programming. There is something for all ages! AWAKEN to worship. AWAKEN to learning. AWAKEN to life.
AWAKEN continues to offer small group community and learning with these groups. •

FROM A PASTOR We always read the story of Jesus being tempted in the wilderness on the first Sunday of Lent. This year we are reading from Mark and all he tells us is that Jesus went for 40 days and nights without food, wild animals were there, and angels came to help in. What wild animals, I wonder, are lurking in my wilderness? What wild animals threaten to steal my life and steer my faith off course? Lent offers me an opportunity to spend a little time with the wild animals that may be looking for a chance to devour my soul. Some of the ones I already know about are fear, jealously, false pride, self doubt, envy, various prejudices, guilt, shame, and selfishness. I sure am glad that angels came to help Jesus and will surely help me when I get into shaky territory. Have a blessed Lent. Jay

PARISH NURSE CORNER - TIP OF THE DAY
What gorgeous weather—thanks be to God! As unpredictable as mother nature has been this year= lets hope February is just as beautiful. The kids are loving the outdoors, but missing the snowmen and snow angels—silly kids!!
If you have unhealthy cholesterol levels (or want to prevent them), one of the first things you should examine is your diet. Are you eating foods that help reduce cholesterol? Or avoiding the ones that cause unhealthy cholesterol levels to creep higher? If not, we've got 10 cholesterol-lowering foods you should grab next time you're at the grocery store. Bonus: Lowering your bad (LDL) cholesterol can make your RealAge 3.3 years younger if you're a man, 0.6 years younger if you're a woman!
Love is in the air!!! Our Giraffe’s are loving learning and their minds are growing. They are learning the legend of St. Valentine with extra lessons in telling the truth, respecting authority, following rules and being patient. So very hard sometimes, but our great teachers also learning the lesson of patience! Letters this month N-Q Hearing the story of St. Valentine helps our great Zebra’s with their listening skills. They are super excited for the Valentine party to come! We have been practicing our matching skills, following directions, big and little, PLUS long and short, lots of work and these kids are having a blast. Hearing that snow is coming makes the Chimp’s giggle with excitement! These kids are working hard on sitting still, but not having a chance most of the year to play in the snow is making them wiggle, wiggle. We are working hard on our ABC’s and numbers. Shapes, sharing and coloring is a perfect day in the life of a chimp. Just when you get all settled in—we up and give the kids a new place to explore! Soon the little lambs (and all the kids) will be headed back to their original rooms. All our goodies will be rearranged and the lambs will find new (old) and exciting toys all over to have a blast with. Stop by and see the newly updated rooms!! All I Really Need to know, I Learned from Noah's Ark!

This week it’s Olive Oil! This oil is a nutritional superstar -- rich in antioxidants and heart-healthy monounsaturated fats that help lower "bad" LDL cholesterol and increase "good" HDL. In fact, in a study of people with high cholesterol, blood samples showed less potential for harmful clotting just two hours after the study subjects ate a meal with olive oil. That's because olive oil is rich in phenolics, plant substances that makes blood less likely to clot. All you need is about 2 tablespoons a day for benefit (use it in place of other fats).
