Less susceptibility to short circuit: Because of its thermal resistance, it is less susceptible to short circuit. This allows XLPE to carry high loads.

Construction The construction followed by XLPE power cable manufacturers is similar to that of PVC. There are both single core as well as three core designs. However, there is a difference in the insulation. The thickness of the XLPE and its toughness means that it requires lesser insulation. One of its drawbacks is its susceptibility to electrical discharge, especially under high voltage (where it is frequently used). To counter this, some manufacturers use semiconducting screens over each insulated core and the conductor. The screen thinlayered screen is extruded during the insulation process, crosslinking it with the conductor to create a close bond. The same process is used when screening the core. The layer is usually composed of semiconducting paint which has a semiconducting tape covering it.

Budget: There are large scales as well as SME manufacturers in this sector. It means that you can get good amount of choices. But beware of choosing the lowest cost. Remember, you get what you pay for. Instead, do a survey of the current market prices and look for a manufacturer who will supply accordingly. Decide function: There are different constructions of XLPE cables and the suitable design depends on the function. So decide on the function before you decide on single or three-stranded core. Check for standards: Standards and certifications are created to ensure that there is a certain quality control and the products are safe to use. Keep in mind that your own certification depends on using certified parts.
