SUNDAY JUNE 15th
Father’s Day is held on the third Sunday of June in the United Kingdom. It is a day to honour fathers and father figures, such as grandfathers and fathers-in-law. Many people make a special effort to visit their fathers or to send them a card or gifts.
Background There are some suggestions that the idea of Father’s Day may originate in pagan sun worship. Some branches of paganism see the sun as the father of the universe. Since the summer solstice occurs around the same time of year as Father’s Day, some people see a link between the two. The idea of a special day to honor fathers and celebrate fatherhood was introduced from the United States. There, a woman called Sonora Smart Dodd was inspired by the American Mother’s Day celebrations to plan a day to honor fathers. Father’s Day has been celebrated in June since 1910 in the USA. The celebrations in the United Kingdom are thought to have been inspired by the American custom of Father’s Day. This is in contrast to Mother’s Day, which has a very different history in the United States and the United Kingdom. 6

Three books to perfectly accompany this years World Cup Tournament and bring you up to speed of it’s history.
Death or Glory: The Dark History of the World Cup by Jon Spurling.
World Cup Stories (BBC) by Chris Hunt
The Story of the World Cup by Brian Glanville
In this astonishing book Jon Spurling has travelled the world to scratch beneath the glossy, confetti-strewn surface of the world’s biggest sporting event to uncover its dark secrets.
The book accompanying the BBC TV series, WORLD CUP STORIES comprehensively tells the story of the FIFA World Cup in words and pictures.
The only comprehensive history of the world’s top soccer tournament, fully updated to include the 1994 competition in the USA.
What lengths did Argentina’s right-wing military junta really go to in order to ensure their national team won the World Cup at home in 1978? Why did Idi Amin instruct Uganda’s footballers to “break the teeth” of their Tanzanian counterparts in a World Cup qualifier? What really happened during the infamous ‘Soccer War’ between El Salvador and Honduras in 1969? Which country’s players were sent to work in a chicken-plucking factory as punishment for a poor result during qualifying in 1994? Part travelogue, part history, Death or Glory is based on more than 100 exclusive interviews with players, supporters, writers and team officials. Its 16 chapters take you on a fascinating journey through sport, politics, conflict and civil strife that ultimately reveals the astonishing power of the world’s greatest sporting event - a power that goes far beyond a few games of football every four years.
these books are available online from Amazon. 12
Stylishly designed, this 288-page book is crammed with pictures and memorabilia from the history of the tournament, and features a complete results breakdown for every World Cup.
As well as vivid accounts of individual games (from the World Cup’s beginnings in 1930 to the latest competition), there are many behind-the-scenes stories and character sketches of the great managers and players who made their mark on the Chronicling the history of the competition, international scene through success in the tournament by tournament, WORLD CUPS World Cup. STORIES also examines many of the background themes that have made the Team listing and statistical summaries competition what it is today: complete a work of reference that is also a fascinating read. The importance of World Cup success to the country of Brazil, and the creation of the beautiful team of 1970. The impact of British isolation from world football in the first half of the 20th Century and the rise and fall of England’s international ambitions after victory in 1966. The importance of World Cup success to the economic revival of West Germany after World War II. The battles with corruption that have dogged the Italian game since their muchdisputed victory at ‘Mussolini’s World Cup’ in 1934. This book proves that there is far more to the telling of the World Cup story than the statistics.
Early success for new Almería book ‘Flamingos In The Desert – Exploring Almería’, a recently published book by local expat author Kevin Borman, has been meeting an enthusiastic reception amongst readers in Almería province. From flamingos to earthquakes, iron ore mines to goats, wildfires to high-speed trains, and white villages to film sets, the book ranges widely. The author shares his reflections and understanding of landscapes, history, wildlife and culture on a journey from the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park to the Sorbas Gypsum Karst and far beyond. He says: “I hope everyone will find things of interest in this book. If you want to know about the reintroduction of loggerhead turtles, the history of the gold industry, the disused airfield near Turre, how to take your olives to the local olive mill or how to walk down the Río de Aguas from source to mouth, it’s all in here. There are floods, nuclear bombs, threshing circles, Moorish irrigation systems, and lots of details of local walks. Peter O’Toole, Sergio Leone, John Lennon and Jack Nicholson make brief appearances. There’s even a recipe for prickly pear jam.” Kevin Borman, a former geography teacher and writer from Sheffield, says: “I’ve been intrigued by this area since first coming here nearly nine years ago. It’s superficially barren but once you look a bit closer, you find all kinds of intriguing features. The more I’ve explored – not just physically but by talking to lots of people and also by reading Spanish sources – the more I wanted to produce a book that would give English-speakers an insight into what really makes this little-known pocket of Andalucía tick.”
COMPETITION Simply write a brief passage or paragraph (max 100 words) telling us about your favourite place in Almeria, either lived in or visited and we’ll enter that into a draw to be in chance to win a signed copy of the book and also, our favourite few will make it into our next edition of this magazine! Send your story to us here at: email@example.com to be entered into the draw. Don’t forget to include your name and contact details in the email and the winner will be announced in the next issue.
The author says; “I’m very heartened by the response. I’ve sold nearly 80 in the first 10 days. It’s going into an increasing number of local outlets and it’s sold well at events in the area such as the monthly craft market at Cariatiz. A lot of people are telling me they’ve enjoyed it and several of those who have bought copies – it’s just €10 direct from me - have contacted me to buy extra ones for friends.” An online gallery of 256 photos is linked to the book. The author invites anyone interested to email him at: firstname.lastname@example.org and he will reply with the link to the photo album. In addition, a free extract from the book is available at feedaread.com. Just put the book title into the ‘Search Bookshop’ box on that website, click on the cover image when it comes up, and then click on the PDF book extract on the next page. Kevin Borman adds: “This is my ninth book but it’s my first about Spain and certainly my most ambitious. It’s been over four years of hard work but I’m delighted with how it’s turned out. I hope those who take the plunge and buy a copy enjoy it too.” Flamingos In The Desert is available from Amazon, from feedaread.com, from selected local outlets and also direct from the author.

How it all began... Jordan Ross Belfort born July 9, 1962, is an American motivational speaker and former stockbroker. He was convicted of fraud crimes related to stock market manipulation and running a penny stock boiler room, for which he spent 22 months in prison. He recounted his life in his memoir, The Wolf of Wall Street, and the 2013 film of the same name, in which he was portrayed by Leonardo DiCaprio. Belfort started his career as a broker at L.F. Rothschild. In the 1990s, he founded the brokerage firm Stratton Oakmont which functioned as a boiler room marketing penny stocks, where he defrauded investors with fraudulent stock sales. During his years as a stock swindler, Belfort developed a partying lifestyle, which included a serious addiction to Quaaludes. Stratton Oakmont employed over 1,000 stock brokers and was involved in stock issues totaling more than $1 billion, including an equity raising for footwear company Steve Madden Ltd 16
The notoriety of the firm, which was targeted by law enforcement officials in the late 1990s, inspired the 2000 film Boiler Room as well as the 2013 film The Wolf of Wall Street.
The fall... Alabama Securities Commissioner Joseph Borg formed a multistate task force that led to the prosecution of Stratton Oakmont after his office was inundated with complaints regarding the brokerage. Belfort was indicted in 1998 for securities fraud and money laundering. After cooperating with the FBI, he served 22 months in federal prison for a pump and dump scheme, which resulted in investor losses of approximately $200 million. Belfort was ordered to pay back $110.4 million that he swindled from stock buyers. In prison he met Tommy Chong, who encouraged Belfort to write down his stories and subsequently publish them. They remained friends after their release from prison.
According to federal prosecutors, Belfort has failed to live up to the restitution requirement of his 2003 sentencing agreement. The agreement requires him to pay 50% of his income towards restitution to the 1,513 clients he defrauded. Of the $11.6 million that has been recovered by Belfort’s victims, $10.4 million of the total is the result of the sale of forfeited properties. In October 2013, federal prosecutors filed a complaint that Belfort, who had income of $1,767,203 from the publication of his two books and the sale of the movie rights, plus an additional $24,000 from motivational speaking since 2007, paid restitution of only $243,000 over the past four years. The government is currently not holding Belfort in default of his payments in order to keep negotiations open, but it is unclear when the full amount of the mandated restitution will be repaid.
Putting pen to paper... Reportedly sober since 1998, Belfort wrote two memoirs, The Wolf of Wall Street and Catching the Wolf of Wall Street, which have

been published in approximately 40 countries and translated into 18 languages. Belfort was the final owner of the luxury yacht Nadine (renamed after His life story was turned into a his second wife, an English-born motion picture starring Leonardo model) originally built for Coco DiCaprio, Jonah Hill, and Margot Chanel in 1961. Virtual ‘Gin’sanity by Adele Land
‘Mother’s ruin’, ‘white satin’ or ‘Vera Lynn’...whatever your name for it, gin is one of the most widely quaffed spirits in the world.
Gone are the days of dusty bottles of Gordon’s in your grandmothers drinks cabinet. Gin has come out of hiding and reinvented itself as a must-drink, in your face, on-trend ‘beverage du jour’.
With its origins in the middle ages, gin was originally used as a ‘cure-all’ Say goodbye to a limp slice of lemon medicine along the lines of ‘kill or cure’. and hello to a whole array of fruity and spicy ingredients adding a fresh twist Made from mashed grain, distilled to this traditional tipple. and flavoured with Juniper, the drink was popularised by King William of Tonics with exotic flavours such as Orange during his time on the British tarragon, cucumber, elderflower and throne. Connoisseurs can enjoy super-sized glasses of gintonic lovingly prepared, often on its own table in front of you, by a smartly dressed ‘expert’ waiter. Perfect for warm Spanish nights, people-watching in elegant plazas or sophisticated beach bars, gin is fast overtaking traditional Sangria or Tinto de Verano as the drink of choice for discerning Spaniards and expats alike. For a special evening at home why not recreate a trendy ‘gintoneria’ on the privacy of your own terrace. Prepare a goblet-sized glass by running a slice of fresh lime around the rim, add heaps of ice and pomegranate seeds or small berries of your choice. Slosh in a decent glug of gin and carefully top with ice-cold tonic. No need for fancy straws or paper parasols the pop of colour from the fruit and the flavoured tonic ensures the drink’s place in endless photos which will leave your UK friends spluttering into their weak thimble-sized version. Gin once had a bad reputation for bringing on depression, well not anymore! A new generation of gin is here and set to brighten up our lives!

Congress passed new traffic legislation that will affect how motorists and cyclists use Spain’s roads. While the law will not come into effect for some months – and some of the reforms still need to be specified by a new regulation code slated for approval in June – these are some of the biggest changes to keep in mind when driving or pedaling along Spanish roads in the future. 1. Helmets mandatory in cities for cyclists under 16. After a long row over safety issues, the Popular Party has backtracked on its intention to make helmets mandatory for all riders within municipal limits. In the end, only minors will have to wear them. Not doing so could lead to fines of 200 euros for parents. 2. Small children may not ride in the front seat. Law enforcement officers will be able to stop and fine drivers carrying children under 1.35 meters in the front passenger seat, unless all the back seats are already taken up by other children also under the height limit (or the car has no back seats at all). Until now, under-12s could ride in the front as long as they had a booster seat or other approved retaining device. Taxis will have to follow the same rules, but
parents, not taxi drivers, will be held accountable for violations. Fines can also reach 200 euros. 3. Bigger fines for drunk driving. Driving with double the allowed limit of alcohol in the blood will now mean a fine of 1,000 euros rather than 500. Those caught driving under the influence twice within the same year will get slapped with a 2,000-euro fine the second time round. 4. Fines for driving after taking drugs. The new law eliminates the need to prove that drug use influenced a person’s driving. Now, all it takes is a saliva test: if the result shows the presence of drugs in the body, drivers will be presented with a 1,000-euro fine regardless of whether the substances affected their driving or not. Prescription drugs are excluded. 5. Alcohol and drug tests for pedestrians. Pedestrians caught violating a traffic regulation – by crossing the road at the wrong place, for instance – will be obliged to submit to a drug and alcohol test. Until now, this was only the case if they were involved in an accident. 6. New speed limits. While the current speed limit on highways and freeways is 120km/h, the
reforms contemplate raising this to 130km/h. The new code scheduled for approval in June will determine where and when this speed may be legally reached. Penalties will be the same: starting at 100 euros for vehicles going up to 150km/h. 7. No minimum speed restrictions for bicycles. This reform aims to solve a problem faced by cyclists in cities. Until now, vehicles could not travel at a speed below 50 percent of the limit. This was a problem for cyclists in spots such as Madrid’s Cuesta de la Vega, a steep slope where riders have a hard time going faster than 25km/h. Freeways remain off-limits to cyclists. 8. Ban on speed camera detectors and jammers. The new legislation expressly prohibits the use of speed camera detectors: drivers caught using them will be liable to fines of 200 euros and the loss of three points on their license. Speed camera jammers are considered much more serious and entail penalties of 6,000 euros and six points off the permit. Only alert systems offering information about the locations of speed cameras based on databases will be legal. Drivers with GPS devices incorporating speed camera detection capabilities will have to deactivate this option.
9. Foreign residents must register their vehicles. Because foreigners living in Spain were not under the obligation to register their cars here, in practice it was difficult to get them to pay traffic fines or submit to controls. The new regulations will determine the deadlines and conditions for vehicle registration. 10. Road works. It will be considered a serious offense to conduct any kind of road works without first informing the pertinent traffic authorities. 11. Road debris. Dropping items of any kind on the road will carry high penalties because of “the danger it poses to other road users.” 12. Inspecting driving schools. Hindering health department or traffic inspectors trying to carry out checks on driving schools and other vehicle-related centers will be considered an offense. 13. Police can fine vehicles without stopping them. Officers will be able to fine vehicles without hailing them down if they are performing duties that prevent them from doing so or giving chase. 14. Drivers to be responsible in accidents involving game animals. Until now, such accidents were
only blamed on drivers if they were in violation of the rules of the road, otherwise the state or the owner of the hunting preserve were held accountable. Under the new law, drivers will always be considered to blame unless it can be proven that the animal stormed the road as a result of a big-game hunt held that day or within 12 hours of one having taken place. The state will only be accountable if it fails to provide proper warning signals or to mend broken fences. In practice what this means is that no compensation will be handed out in the event of a driver being killed or seriously injured after a collision with an animal on one of Spain’s nearly 25,000 hunting preserves.
being driven without the proper permit (a C permit in the case of vehicles weighing between 3,500kg and 7,500kg and a D permit in the case of buses).
15. 50 percent discount for early fine payment extended to 20 days. This is up from the current 15 days.
20. Fewer driving restrictions for cancer patients. Right now cancer sufferers are hardly ever allowed to drive, unless their doctor takes it up with the traffic authority. But improved medical treatment is set to be reflected in the new road rules, which will place fewer restrictions on patients.
16. Environmental restrictions. Vehicles may be barred from entering certain roadways based on environmental criteria. The Environment Ministry will establish the exact rules governing this point. 17. New reasons for immobilizing vehicles. As well as the vehicles of drivers who let children ride without the proper safety devices, authorities will also be able to immobilize those
18. Ban on taking unsafe vehicles to other countries. This article is an application of the United Nations’ Global Plan for the Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011-2020, which aims to discourage the importing and exporting of new or used vehicles deemed unsafe. 19. Priority for tow trucks. Tow trucks on their way to assist motorists will have right of way and have to be treated the same way as ambulances.

Ayuntamiento de Mojácar Mojácar puts into action five measures during a time of crisis...Here are 3 of them...
Seafront promenade The current economic situation prevents the full execution of the second phase of Mojácar’s seafront promenade, and therefore the Environment Ministry has decided to divide it into three parts. For this reason, the Extraordinary Plenary meeting recently celebrated at Mojácar Town Hall gave the green light to the extension of the seafront promenade, on approving the first stretch of the of the second phase which will extend the length of the promenade by 880 metres, from the area known as ‘Cueva del Lobo’ to the Red Cross. Also approved was the collaboration agreement between the Agriculture, Food and Environment Ministry and Mojácar Town Hall on the execution of the measure denominated “Breakdown I of the Seafront Promenade 2nd Phase project”. This agreement demonstrates the enormous effort made by the Coasts General Management on one of the most relevant demands for Mojácar and taking responsibility for 50% of the investment. Beaches Mojácar Town Hall pays particular attention to its coast. It therefore periodically carries out cleaning of the coastline, and the gullies formed during winter have been straightened out with new earth and by flattening. Special attention has been given to the Marina de la Torre area with the installation on the beach of a shaded zone for the disabled, since the Tourist Office, as the councillor responsible for the area Emmanuel Agüero explains, “became aware of the large number of disabled people who come to the hotels located there; specifically one of the hotel chains had 4.000 guests with some kind of disability last year. As a result, and with the aim of adapting one of the most important zones in terms of tourism, it was agreed to prepare this shaded area and to increase the number of amphibious chairs for disabled people to bathe, which they need, and to eliminate barriers.” The total investment adds up to approximately 13,000 euros.
Oficina Municipal de Turismo de Mojácar . Plaza del Frontón s/n , 04638 Mojácar. Tel: 902 575 130 www.mojacar.es 32
At the same time, Mojácar Town Hall has made available to the local Civil Protection a new vehicle, as well as equipment for the volunteers making up the group, and who this year will be back to look after and watch over the beaches and conditioning factors.
Municipal Actions Architectural barriers in a locality with a difficult physical geography like Mojácar make access to the village difficult. The putting in operation of a lift which communicates the lower part of the village with Aire Street in 30 seconds makes access to the urban centre of the village a great deal easier and offers singular views of the Valley of the Pyramids. There have been positive comments about this new mechanical access located near the sports centre, on the esplanade of which there is a weekly market, from those who have been using it since last Friday and who are making use of it.
Things to do...Places to see...
Mar Menor - Costa Calida - Murcia - Spain Lo Pagan is situated on the north shore of the Mar Menor and has merged with San Pedro del Pinatar to become one big town. It has a beautiful beach, promenade and small marina. During the summer months there is a lively funfair beside the marina which adds to the seaside atmosphere. The town is most famous for its mud baths. These are free, which is great news if you have a large family to keep occupied. All ages can use the mud baths from 1 to 100, but only the truly hardy indulge during the winter months. The mud baths are located at the end of the beach and the start of the salinas walking and cycling route out to sea. Simply walk down the steps, cover yourself with the therapeutic mud, said to be good for all types of skin complaints, aches and pain, dry off in the sun, then re-enter the water to wash it all off!

Bora Milutinovic coached in every tournament between 1986 and 2002 - but for different teams: Mexico, Costa Rica, USA, Nigeria and China. Six teams have been unbeaten but not the champions in the same finals. Those unbeaten teams are: Scotland in 1974 (1 win, 2 draws), Brazil in 1978 (4 wins, 3 draws), England in 1982 (3 wins, 2 draws), Cameroon in 1982 (3 draws), Belgium in 1998 (3 draws) and New and New Zealand 2010 (3 draws). The only person to have played both the men’s World Cup Football and World Cup Cricket is Viv Richards - playing for Antigua in football and West Indies in cricket. Australian Ellyse Perry has appeared in both the women’s cricket (2009) and football World Cups (2011). Cameroon’s Roger Milla is the oldest player to have played at the World Cup - he was 42 years and 39 days old when he played his last match against Russia in 1994. Northern Ireland’s Norman Whiteside is the youngest ever finals player, being just 17 years and 41 days when he took the field against Yugoslavia in 1982. Shirt swapping was once officially prohibited in 1986 because FIFA did not want players to ‘bare their chests’ on the field. The highest attendance at a World Cup match was 199,854 at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janerio for the 1950 decider between Uraguay and Brazil. In the 1950 finals, there was only a final pool to determine the winner, without a knock-out Final as has been held in other Finals series. The most common surname of World Cup players is Gonzalez or Gonzales. The most common score in a World Cup finals match is 1-0.

Brazil are the only country to have appeared in every finals, 19 finals tournaments from 1930 to 2010. And they have automatically qualified for the 2014 tournament as hosts. The 2010 World Cup is the first with no debutant associations, although two of the qualifiers (Slovakia and Serbia) have previously appeared only as parts of former competing nations. No host country had ever been eliminated in the first round - until South Africa in 2010.

“Get on Yer Bike” Cycling improves your Health and Wellbeing
Cycling for fitness can be one of the most beneficial and easiest ways to lose weight. The benefits of cycling to lose weight is the low impact nature of cycling and the ability to cycle more frequently with more volume than you can with running. Although swimming is another great sport that’s low impact during a weight lose period , it’s not as convenient as getting “On Yer Bike” and riding. Getting on your bike regularly not only gets you where you want to go, sometimes faster than a car, but also protects you against a wide range of illnesses, improves your cardio vascular system, reduces levels of depression and stress and makes you feel better by raising your self-esteem therefore improving your mood. Cycling everyday where the exercise leaves you breathing heavily but not out of breath, is an effective and enjoyable form of aerobic exercise. This is the type of exercise that is most effective at promoting good health and wellbeing. For example cycling reduces the risk of serious conditions such as heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity and the most common forms of diabetes. A 15 minute bike ride 5 times per week burns off the equivalent of 11 pounds of fat in a year and cycling for an hour burns the energy supplied by a chocolate bar or a couple of alcoholic drinks. All of us should take part in some form of mild to moderate physical activity for at least 30 minutes five times per week that leaves us out of breath.

...with thanks to Gary from www.cyclogicalcostablanca.com
There are no age barriers to cycling and people of most fitness levels, of all body shapes can cycle, slowly and gently if necessary. So “GET ON YER BIKE”.
What sets cycling apart from most forms of exercise is how well it fits into our busy, modern lifestyles. Apart from the bicycle itself (and a recommended protective safety helmet ) no other equipment is needed, no special time needs to be set aside and no special clothes are required. Instead of spending time stuck in a car a bus, train or on foot spend it on your bike. How much you ride depends on you, your fitness and your lifestyle. New cyclists could start off by using the bike to pop a few hundred yards down to the shops or the post office, gradually increasing the distance they cover. In a few weeks aerobic fitness will have improved and you will be able to ride for miles without feeling anything more than a little puffed out. The more active an individual is, the healthier they are. But whichever form of cycling you choose to pursue, remember to have fun whilst you are doing it.

Tray Baked Chicken
This is a quick, simple and tasty dish for lunch or supper. You add additional vegetables if desired or substitute vegetables, the choice is yours!!! The chicken is great served with either a jacket potato, rice or salad.
Ingredients: • 4 Large ripe tomatoes. • 2 Medium red or white onions. • 1 Red and 1 Yellow pepper. • 4 Garlic cloves. •½-1 Teaspoon smoked paprika. • 2 Tablespoons of olive oil (possibly may need a bit extra) • 2 Tablespoons balsamic vinegar. • 6 smallish chicken portions without bones - available from Mercadona or your local butcher. • Optional – you can add some fresh Thyme (why not try lemon Thyme from the garden centre).
You will need: • Large baking dish or sheet, roughly 10 x 12 inch.
Method: 1. Preheat oven to 180c (160c for fan oven) or gas 4. 2. Quarter tomatoes, peel onions and cut into large wedges, deseed and roughly chop peppers and put on tray or in dish with chicken bits. 3. Squash the unpeeled garlic cloves with the back of your knife and add to the above. 4. Add the oil, balsamic, paprika and a good pinch of salt and pepper and mix all ingredients together and spread evenly, making sure the chicken is not covered by the vegetables. 5. Roast for about l hour or until the chicken is golden and cooked through, turning and basting a couple of times during cooking with the juices.

Mrs. Brown’s Boys is a television sitcom created by and starring Irish writer and performer Brendan O’Carrol. The titular character Agnes Brown is played by O’Carroll himself along with several close friends and family members making up the rest of the cast. The show adopts an informal production style where the production mistakes and tomfoolery, mostly I have just brought a pair of Meatloaf instigated by O’Carroll, are edited into knickers...On the front it says “I will do each episode. anything for love” on the back it says After being slated by critics, the show “But I won’t do that!” has become a ratings success in both Ireland, where it is set, and the United If women belong in the Kitchen, Kingdom, where it is recorded. Shadow Creek Las Vegas
L AS VE G AS
Course Highlights... Hole 4
The fourth hole is a par five that bends to the left around a wide lake. After the tee shot, golfers reach the landing area where the lake and the green are fully exposed to view.
If you are a golfer and play courses all over the world such as Spain, UK or USA you probably, at one time or another think you are being “ripped off” for 18 holes.
How much it cost to make this course is under debate but estimates place it between $60 million to $100 million. So what does $500 get you?
So just to make you feel a little better we thought we would put in the world´s most expensive round at $500.
First up you will be driven to and from the course in a limo. You will also get your own personal caddy for the round to guide you through each of them.
Shadow Creek Golf Course – Nevada, U.S.A. ($500 pp, per round) Located in North Las Vegas, Nevada, this 18-hole golf course owned by casino mogul Steve Wynn and also designed by Tom Fazio opened in 1989. if you live in Spain, Valderrama is 350€ per round at the weekend and back in the UK, only £160 will get you a round at the home of golf, St.Andrews. Built from the desert floor it reportedly has over 21,000 trees of over 200 varieties to make sure the course is hidden from public view.
You also can´t just turn up with your clubs as only invited guests of MGM Mirage resorts are allowed to play. Every hole at Shadow Creek could make a signature statement at most golf courses throughout the world. Sparkling creeks, towering waterfalls and lush gardens are framed by commanding mountains. Shadows slide across dramatic landscapes, changing shape and contour from dawn to dusk.
The steep hill and tall trees on the right are accents for the left side of the hole near the green, which is framed by the lake and a steep, tree-covered hillside on the left. From a wide landing area, this hole narrows to the green, lending a closer feeling between golfing companions and between man and nature.
In a way, the 18th hole is a combination of every golf shot, every design treatment and every setting created on the rest of the holes at Shadow Creek. Alternate tee positions are set into a high ridge to offer various angles on the tee shot. Water on the right flows from the green toward the tee into three lakes which are broken by three waterfalls. A long, high-ridge line travels from the tee up the left side and then the hole doglegs at the landing area, which is about 25 feet above the water. Playing safely to the left will bring golfers to a second dogleg, just short of a bend in the lake. Then it’s an approach across water and bunkers to the long narrow green that’s framed by steep hills, dense trees and flowers. The finishing hole was purposely planned as a par five so that we would have room to reprise as many design elements as possible. This hole calls to mind the environment surrounding the entire property and, we hope, the exhilaration of playing golf at a place as special as Shadow Creek. If you have but one round left in your bag, make it happen here. Shadow Creek may be the most spectacular golf course this side of heaven.

North Island, Frégate Island Private and Denis Island If what you want is utter seclusion and perfect peace, in a location off-limits to everyone but the resort staff and a few other guests, then a private island is the only place to go. The 17 palatial teak villas on neighbouring Frégate Island Private (pictured) - each with a private pool, dining pavilion and butler offer more conventional, less-laidback luxury, as well as a yacht club, PADI centre and kids club. More affordable, if not exactly inexpensive, are the three villas and 22 cottages on Denis Island, a crescent of palm-fringed beaches, half an hour by plane from Mahé. The wildlife is a major draw: there are superb birdwatching opportunities, and you can snorkel or swim in the lagoon among turtles, clownfish, parrot-fish, triggerfish and rays. North Island (www.north-island.com), from €2,115 per person per night, all inclusive . Frégate Island Private (www.fregate.com), doubles from €3,300, minimum stay three nights Denis Island (www.denisisland.com), doubles from €970, full board When to go: All year round, although June-September are drier and less humid, with temperatures from 24°C to 28°C
The Wakaya Club & Spa, Laucala Island and Dolphin Island Fiji’s pre-eminent private-island resort was The Wakaya Club & Spa. It’s an exceptionally lovely development of 10 handsome vernacular cottages, or bures (rhymes with hooray), made from woven bamboo and indigenous yakawood. Bill and Melinda Gates chose to spend their honeymoon here, perhaps because few resorts prize privacy so highly. Indeed, the grandest bure of all, Vale O, is set amid 16 acres of private land, and Wakaya Island is inaccessible even to passing yachts; the only way to get there is by private plane. However since December 2008 the Wakaya Club has had a rival in Laucala Island, a 3,000-acre island that was once the property of Malcolm Forbes. It’s an idyllic place, with a fine sandy beach, stretches of mangrove, a swimming pool and walking trails. Close to the island’s main jetty stand three large weathered-timber, palm-thatched, veranda-wrapped bures, built using local techniques. The central building is essentially living space, and it is flanked by two more buildings containing two double bedrooms apiece. There’s also a ‘sleep-out bure’ on a hilltop - an utterly romantic, if rustic, open-walled structure for those unfazed by nature where you’re woken by an unforgettable sunrise. The Wakaya Club & Spa (www.wakaya.com) from US$2,185 Laucala Island (www.laucala.com), doubles from US$4,560 Dolphin Island (www.dolphinislandfiji.com), exclusive use from A$9,000 (about £6,000) per night, including all food, drinks, transfers and non-motorised water sports When to go: Fiji is warm and wet all year, though from May until November temperatures drop and it rains less.
British Virgin Islands: Necker Island, Guana Island and Peter Island Resort & Spa The most northerly of the Leeward Islands, this archipelago is home to several private islands, none lovelier than Sir Richard Branson’s Necker Island, which lies 30 minutes by boat northeast of Tortola, itself a 35-minute flight from San Juan (which is, ironically, best reached on British Airways, which flies direct from Gatwick). Its 74 acres are home to 200 flamingos, 60 resident staff and a maximum of 28 guests. It’s an idyllic place. Indeed it’s hard to believe that a more beautiful stretch of sand exists than Turtle Beach, off which an aqua trampoline is anchored to the seabed. Necker Island (www.neckerisland.virgin.com), exclusive use from about US$58,300, minimum stay five nights, sleeps 28 When to go: From Easter to June, when the foliage is in bloom (and hotel rates tend to be less expensive than the popular winter season Antigua and Barbuda: Jumby Bay Two miles off the north-east coast of Antigua lies Long Island, something of a misnomer given that it’s neither elongated, nor long - not much more than a mile end to end, with a circumference of less than four. All of which may explain why the island, which is part of the Texas-based Rosewood Resorts group and reopened last year after a US$28 million renovation, is more usually referred to as Jumby Bay. This everything- taken-care-of attitude pervades all aspects of the resort, an all-inclusive of the classiest kind (even Champagne is complimentary as long as you order it by the glass). For somewhere so new, the look is resolutely old-school, ostensibly ‘British colonial’ with terracotta (or roseate stone) floors, loud colours and prints. But every room is impressively kitted out, right down to the provision of Nespresso machines, Bose sound systems and bicycles (each villa has its own golf cart). There’s a substantial spa and an excellent kids’ club (the whole place is supremely child-friendly), and as a big, slick, luxurious, happy holiday resort, it’s hard to fault. Jumby Bay (www.jumbybayresort.com), doubles from US$1,540 When to go: From Easter to June, when the foliage is in bloom (and hotel rates tend to be less expensive than the popular winter season).
