There are three elements to the human condition : mind, body and soul. Understanding how our mind, body and soul interlace and function with each other helps us to restore the equilibrium of these elements and leads to more balanced, harmonious and happier lives. When trying to understand what each of the mind, body, soul elements represent, consider a car consisting of the engine, the body of the vehicle itself, and the driver.

Because our bodies are the most tangible element of the three, because we can see it so can not ignore it, it is easy to intellectualize what our bodies do. Our bodies contain all our vital organs, transforms food into energy, has sex and reproduces and a myriad of other complex bodily functions. Our bodies are servants, taking orders from our brain and feeding stimuli from the external world back to our brains for processing and further instructions. Our bodies are the vehicle for our mind and soul to experience this world.

Our minds are the engine in the car. Our minds process information, contemplates and solves problems, keeps our bodies safe from danger and gives instructions and directions for our bodies to follow. Our minds are extremely complex, incredibly powerful organs. Our minds are like muscles, the more we use and engage our minds, the stronger, more flexible, more alert they become.

The driver is our soul, and it wants to experience everything! It here for the thrill of the ride and the journey. Our soul gives purpose to our minds by giving our minds direction and goals to work towards. The driver is experienced and has an infinite capacity for love, wisdom and understanding. The driver is beyond and above the trivialities of our day to day life. Our driver knows that the vehicle and engine are perfectly capable of performing tasks to achieve goals and dreams and our driver knows exactly what those goals are, knows exactly where the vehicle and engine need to be going and knows exactly how to get there.

Our western culture has for the most part ignored the spiritual elements of the human psyche. We have been conditioned to focus on the body, and only recently has the mind become a secondary concern. Because of this unbalanced perception of our human condition, our minds have been tasked with being, both simultaneously, engine and driver. A recipe for disaster! Our minds know how to control our bodies and to operate within society, but are essentially designed to also be a servant, a servant to our soul, the driver, but without this understanding and awareness, our minds have switched to autopilot, moving at a million miles an hour, in every direction, but never getting anywhere, yet always being exhaustively busy, frustrated and disheartened by the  lack of any satisfying progress made.

To restore the equilibrium of the three elements, we simply need to transition the power of control from our minds, the engine, back to our soul, the driver. The driver has always been there with us, it never left, it was just being eclipsed by our overactive minds on autopilot. To reconnect with the driver, we need to turn off the engines and let the vehicle rest. We need to develop a peaceful mind. (This link has some great advice about how to develop a peaceful mind)

Once you have attained this peaceful state of mind simply observe your thoughts as they arise, letting them pass by and contemplate who or what is watching the thoughts?

The “who” and “what” watching your thoughts, is the “who” and “what” that is your driver. It is not something that you can physically see or touch. It is just a sensation, an understanding, an awareness, a realization of the presence of the third crucial element, the element that gives purpose and direction for your mind, which in turn, gives instructions and directions to your body.

By reconnecting with your soul as the driver, your mind is free from the burden and stress of trying to ascertain what your dreams and passions are and instead is gently guided to what tasks, activities and projects it needs to be immediately concerned with, restoring the harmony and balance of the three essential elements of the human condition : mind, body and soul.
