I

really don’t think there is anything more awe-inspiring than spring in South Africa. As the grey of winter surrenders to the return of our famous sunshine, thousands of small, otherwise insignificant plants burst into full bloom, covering the plains of the Western and Northern Capes in particular in a brightly coloured carpet of flowers. The best time for game viewing is also in spring, with the reserves playing host to newborn animals and the coastal waters of the Western Cape graced with the presence of the majestic southern right whales. Diving and surfing opportunities

are great this month too, and spring and autumn are the best times for hiking, as temperatures can be too high in summer and rain, snow and thunderstorms can hinder expeditions in the winter. In this month’s edition we present some inspiring ideas of ways in which to spend this glorious time of year in our country, from pristine wilderness expeditions and slick city getaways to rejuvenating pamper escapes and fresh wine and dine experiences. Enjoy the September edition!

Spring is a great time for deep cleansing, particularly for those of us who are exposed to harsh environmental toxins on a daily basis. Earth Zen, a South African producer of a variety of clay-based detox treatments, offers the latest in deeply therapeutic bath and body products. The signature Earth Zen Detox Bath contains a combination of Bentonite and Zeolite, which produce an ionic charge which attracts, binds and removes toxins from the body. The powder turns to a soft therapeutic clay in bath water, making for a real South African-style mud bath. The Mud Mask is our favourite Earth Zen product. The highly absorptive gel draws impurities from the skin and

allows for the uptake of vital alkalising minerals via ionic exchange. From drawing out excess oils and debris to stimulating circulation and tightening the skin, the Mud Mask is a real wonder product that leaves the skin feeling incredibly soft and terrifically cleansed. The Earth Zen Scrub is also a great home spa treatment. A multi-level skin exfoliator and rejuvenator formulated for effective deep cleansing, The Scrub boasts a wonderful texture that allows for a great massage experience, while the lemongrass scent is sweet and uplifting. All Earth Zen products are composed of the best organic ingredients, are vegan-friendly and are not tested on animals.

The Pure Beginnings Natural Aqueous Cream is petroleum-free and allows skin to breathe as nature intended whilst it softly cleanses, moisturises and nourishes delicate skin. The Body Lotion is suitable for all skin types and is designed to nourish the skin with the excellent moisturising and anti-ageing properties of Vitamin E. The Body Wash, which is formulated to gently clean without robbing the skin of its natural moisture, is pH balanced and fragranced with uplifting organic ylang ylang and spearmint. The citrus and ylang ylang scented Bubble Bath is a great non-irritating formula that makes bath time more fun. Pure Beginnings’ silky Shampoo and nourishing Conditioner contain ylang ylang and jojoba oil to leave hair soft and shimmering whilst at the same time stimulating hair growth. Our favourite Pure Beginnings offering is the Baby Gift Set, which is beautifully packaged and provides a range of essentials perfect for a baby shower gift or travel pack. We also love the fluoride-free Berry Toothpaste, which is designed for children of all ages but which has a fantastic raspberry flavour that will attract young-at-heart adults too.

Although Naturals Beauty offers a wide range of products, from essentials to baby, teen, mature and men’s ranges, we believe that the products listed below deserve special mention. The Essentials Collection nourishing Day and Night Creams offer the firming, smoothing and anti-wrinkle properties for which South Africa’s famous Baobab is renowned. A range of natural oils, 22

Our favourite feature is the rooftop pool deck, on which we spent a glorious afternoon lazing on the comfortable loungers and sipping cocktails whilst marvelling at the expansive views of Table Mountain and surrounds. Although it would be easy to simply spend a day disappearing into oblivion in the floatation pool or detoxifying under a simulated tropical rain shower in the rasul chamber, the treatments offered by the warm and professional spa therapists are truly world-class. Life Day Spa offers an extensive range of relaxing, invigorating and beautifying skincare, body and grooming treatments. Tailored packages allow for bespoke pampering, and there really is something for everyone – from the stressed executive to the sportsman or the mom-to-be. Whereas we opted for the more standard massage, manicure and facial package (although there wasn’t anything ‘standard’ about the treatment itself), guests looking for something out of the ordinary could choose an experience like the Polynesian Spa Ritual, which includes unusual delights such as a Mahana massage from Bora Bora enjoyed with a tasty pina colada on the side. A Koeksister for Evita A Legendary South African Dessert Text & Image: © Marco-David Soares

F

ew can convey the melting pot of South African cultures and traditions as gracefully as Evita Bezuidenhout, dramatic satirist Pieter-Drik Uys’ famous Afrikaner activist and socialite. A figure truly respected, loved and woven deeply into the fabric of South Africa, Evita has survived the country’s evolution and remained true to her own cultural identity, aiding reconciliation through her dramatized opinions and belief that “when

enemies sit and eat together, they talk together”. The famous South African koeksister, a delicious syrup-coated twisted doughnut, is as memorable and unique as Evita herself, who once famously described the confectionary as the Viagra of politics. This month’s recipe is dedicated to Evita Bezuidenhout and the thousands of South Africans to whom she has given voice over the years.

INGREDIENTS:

Dough 1. Sift the flour, baking powder and salt together. 2. Rub in the butter and mix until pliable. 3. Mix this with the egg and water (adding the water a little at a time). 4. Work the dough well. If the dough appears to be lumpy and sticky, continue to work it until it balls up. 5. Let the dough set at room temperature for about three hours (under an inverted mixing bowl).

Syrup • 1kg/4.5lb sugar • 3 star anise • 1½ cinnamon sticks • ½ tsp ground ginger • 1½ cups water • juice of 1 lemon

To prepare the koeksisters: 1. Roll out the dough (5mm thickness). 2. Cut the dough into strips (6cm long, 2cm wide). 3. Cut each of these strips into three strips (not all the way through - leave the strips connected at the top). 4. Plait each strip and pinch together at the end. 5. Deep fry until golden to dark brown (I like mine darker brown and crunchy on the outside, but it’s a matter of preference). 6. Remove from heat and drain quickly. 7. Dip the hot koeksisters in the cold syrup (the secret is to keep the syrup cold and the koeksisters hot so as to draw just the right amount of syrup). 8. After a few minutes, place the koeksisters on a metal rack so that some of the syrup can drip off before serving.

Dough • 2 cups cake flour • 2 tbsp baking powder • ½ tsp salt • 1 large egg • 4 tbsp butter/margarine • ½ cup water • sunflower oil for deep frying

METHOD: Syrup (prepare a day in advance) Mix all the syrup ingredients together in a deep pot and bring to a boil. Place in the refrigerator overnight.

Enjoy the sweet treats, and remember to visit my food blog (www.marcosfoodblog.wordpress.com) for more South African favourites! 32

01Healthsunburn is a potential health hazard

S

ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. If you plan to be sexually active during your stay in South Africa, be sure to take necessary precautions. Check out www.redribbon.co.za for more information. Visit www.brillianttan.co.za for a safer way to obtain that holiday tan.

02Safety • Do not to walk alone at night. • Do not flaunt your possessions when you are out in public. • Only allow clearly uniformed guards and personnel to handle your possessions. • Be aware of what is happening around you. • If anything should happen do not hesitate to phone the police.

03Travel Options Air

There are several domestic airlines in South Africa, including South African Airways, South African Express, Interlink, Airlink and British Airways. Low-cost carriers include: 1time, Kulula and Mango.

Bus

Greyhound (+27 83 915 9000), InterCape (+27 21 380 4400) and Translux (+27 861 589 282) are the three main bus services in South Africa. All flights and bus tickets can be booked via Computicket at www.computicket.com or by calling +27 83 915 8000.

Trains

For budget trips across the country, Shosholoza Meyl is the best service available. Book online at www.shosholozameyl.co.za and enquiries can be directed to +27 86 000 8888. If you decide to splurge, though, there are three outstanding options. The famous Blue Train (+27 12 334 8459), Rovos Rail (+27 12 315 8242) and Premier Classe (+27 86 000 8888) are luxurious liners with all the bells and whistles.

Cars

Most of the main car rental companies have outlets at the international airports and in major centres. In South Africa, we drive on the left side of the road. The general speed limits are 120 km/h on the freeways, 100 km/h on major roads outside built-up areas and 60 km/h in built-up areas. Foreign members of the Automobile Association (AA) can register as a temporary member in South Africa at any local AA branch. For more information, phone +27 83 843 2222.

Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
