Climbing into bed alone can be exciting too if you lose yourself in the pages of one of our favourite books, which offer everything from reasons to fall in love with elephants to the way in which one woman’s love of Africa changed the face of local literature forever. New Hiking Trail at Gondwana Game Reserve in Mossel Bay

The newly established Quagga Hiking Trail is now open to guests to meander and explore the fynbos-clad valleys of the 1200-hectare predator-free area of Gondwana Game Reserve in Mossel Bay. Hikers can now amble on foot and see the many treasures on the reserve, with points of interest signposted. The trail traverses an area rich in biodiversity that is largely inaccessible to even 4Ă—4 vehicles, providing nature lovers with the opportunity to marvel at the abundance of indigenous flora and keep an eye out for rare and endangered animals such as the Cape Mountain Zebra. The trail has been named after the Cape Mountain Zebra, which is informally referred to as the Berg Quagga by the local people. The 2.5km circular trail is open to all ages and can be completed easily within 45 minutes. The walk starts at the Milkwood Valley ridge before descending into a valley where it continues alongside a non-perennial stream that attracts various indigenous bird and mammal species. www.gondwanagr.co.za

lthough most famous for its thriving art festival, the charming town of Grahamstown in South Africa’s Eastern Cape province attracts culture and outdoor enthusiasts throughout the year. Situated in Frontier Country, Grahamstown is surrounded by a range of game and nature reserves, offering visitors a chance to explore the cultural diversity of the town while simultaneously experiencing the great outdoors and the Big 5 that roam the heart of the Cacadu District. Countless accommodation and tour companies offer visitors packages to suit both overnight and day trips, and explorations into the nearby malaria-free reserves are particularly popular choices. For those who do not want to venture out of town, historical tours, charming art and craft stores and an impressive plant diversity provide ample attraction. The surrounding area is also home to smaller towns including Alicedale, which offers visitors a view of unscathed rock art. Another gem is Riebeek East, which is known as the cradle of human culture and lies in the vicinity of archaeological sites that show cultural activity predating many claims world-wide. These historical towns

as well as Frasers Camp, Sevenfountains, Sidbury and Fort Brown are all within a 50km radius of Grahamstown, allowing visitors to use it as a base from which to explore the area. The unspoilt landscape and historical venues are not the only discoveries on offer to visitors in the district, as Frontier Country also has over 400 acres of water containing small and large-mouth bass, barbell, carp, mullet, yellowtail and trout. For adventure seekers, the Eastern Province Skydivers Club offers a bird’s-eye view of the magnificent landscape. Music enthusiasts can peruse the largest archive of African music in sub-Saharan Africa at the International Library of African Music on the Rhodes University Campus, while those looking for a bit of peace and quiet can visit the Makana Botanical Gardens, the second oldest botanical gardens in South Africa and home to an impressive array of local and exotic plant species as well as 160 bird species. From Big 5 expeditions to historical discoveries, cultural inspirations and adventure activiities, there is something for everyone in Grahamstown and surrounds. “Every year we celebrate with our graduates as they complete their training and establish this milestone in their careers,” says SA Chefs Academy owner Paul Hartmann, a renowned international chef in his own right. “For us at the Academy, this year is however especially significant. We are proud of the contribution we have been able to make to the industry over the past decade.” The new branding that will be rolled out across the organisation takes its lead from the re-invented logo. The new logo incorporates creativity and professionalism among its design themes along with the green hue signifying growth and prosperity. “When we launched the school in 2004, our vision was to create a world-class training facility, built on our own personal experiences, to equip students to be the best in their chosen fields. Looking back now, I think we can safely say we are achieving our goal.” Past students of the SA Chefs Academy have achieved a variety of positions and recognition. Hartmann says these highlights, as well as the day-to-day performance of former students, contributes to the overall image of the SA Chefs Academy. “This year has seen a marked increase in block release students, which shows the faith that the industry puts in us. We are excited about the prospect of training chefs that have a huge passion for and commitment to the industry. This is very important to us and we hope to continue to work closely with hotels and restuarants at this level.” The reputation of the SA Chefs Academy has also attracted significant partnerships with leading companies, including Bosch, Patleys, Rialto, Ecolab, Tydstroom, Nulaid, Kerry (formerly Orley Products) and Olive Pride. and Irresistible Berry Tartlets Text & Images: © Clarissa du Plessis

S

poil your Valentine this year by indulging in a seductive combination of Pongrácz Rosé and heartshaped berry tartlets. The easy-to-make sweet dessert is a delightful companion to the enticing Rosé, with its blushing hue and delicate yeasty tones. Layered with toast and ripe fruit encased in a firm mousse with a persistent bead, Pongrácz Rosé is perfect for a day of romance. The delightful Cap Classique is composed in the classic French tradition of the noble varietals Pinot noir and Chardonnay, and when served ice cold in beautiful fluted glasses, special moments of luxury are guaranteed.

Filling: • 180ml (¾ cup) cream • 5 × 80g slabs of white chocolate, coarsely chopped • 100g raspberries • 200g strawberries • 45ml (3 tbsp) warm apricot jam 1. For the pastry, cream the butter and sugar in a food processor until pale and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time while the motor is still running. Mix until well incorporated. 2. Add the flour and blend until it forms a workable dough. Cover in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 1 hour. 3. Preheat the oven to 180°C. Press the pastry into 8 heart-shaped tartlet tins and refrigerate for 30 minutes. Blind bake for 10-12 minutes or until golden and cooked. Set aside to cool. 4. For the filling, bring the cream to the boil in a small saucepan. Pour it over the chocolate and stir until smooth. Cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes. 5. Zambezi Queen

There are few natural wonders as synonymous with Africa’s raw wilderness as the great Chobe River. These waters divide Namibia’s Caprivi Strip from Botswana’s Chobe National Park, and the exotic banks boast one of the densest populations of wildlife on the African continent. Teeming with life, this National Park sprawls across some 11 000 m of lush African bush, and is home to the largest populace of elephants in the world – currently estimated at roughly 120 000. It is on this great expanse of untamed water that an adventure unlike any other awaits. Why join the crowds on land-based game drives when you can experience the thrill of it all from your own private suite aboard a luxury 45 meter boat? The Zambezi Queen is all about pampering, indulgence and superior comfort. Whether you are dining on the third level restaurant watching the animals gather at the water at dusk, game viewing from one of the private boats or attempting to land your first tiger fish, the professional Zambezi Queen team will be on hand to meet your every need.

01Healthsunburn is a potential health hazard

S

ince most of the activities in South Africa happen outdoors, sunburn is a potential health hazard. Cover up and use sun screen lotion whenever you are outside. Malaria risk areas include Northern KZN and Zululand, the Northern Province and Mpumalanga. The risk of contraction in South Africa is minimal when the proper precautions are taken. These include taking malaria tablets, using insect repellent and mosquito coils, and wearing long sleeved clothing. Tap water in most areas is safe to drink, but be sure to double check with your hosts first. One of the biggest health risks in South Africa is HIV and Aids. If you plan to be sexually active during your stay in South Africa, be sure to take necessary precautions. Check out www.redribbon.co.za for more information. Visit www.brillianttan.co.za for a safer way to obtain that holiday tan.

02Safety • Do not to walk alone at night. • Do not flaunt your possessions when you are out in public. • Only allow clearly uniformed guards and personnel to handle your possessions. • Be aware of what is happening around you. • If anything should happen do not hesitate to phone the police.

03Travel Options Air

There are several domestic airlines in South Africa, including South African Airways, South African Express, Interlink, Airlink and British Airways. Low-cost carriers include: 1time, Kulula and Mango.

Bus

Greyhound (+27 83 915 9000), InterCape (+27 21 380 4400) and Translux (+27 861 589 282) are the three main bus services in South Africa. All flights and bus tickets can be booked via Computicket at www.computicket.com or by calling +27 83 915 8000.

Trains

For budget trips across the country, Shosholoza Meyl is the best service available. Book online at www.shosholozameyl.co.za and enquiries can be directed to +27 86 000 8888. If you decide to splurge, though, there are three outstanding options. The famous Blue Train (+27 12 334 8459), Rovos Rail (+27 12 315 8242) and Premier Classe (+27 86 000 8888) are luxurious liners with all the bells and whistles.

Cars

Most of the main car rental companies have outlets at the international airports and in major centres. In South Africa, we drive on the left side of the road. The general speed limits are 120 km/h on the freeways, 100 km/h on major roads outside built-up areas and 60 km/h in built-up areas. Foreign members of the Automobile Association (AA) can register as a temporary member in South Africa at any local AA branch. For more information, phone +27 83 843 2222.

Smoking in partially enclosed public places such as covered patios, verandas, balconies, walkways and parking areas is also prohibited. Children under the age of 18 are prohibited from entering designated smoking areas and purchasing cigarettes. There are stiff penalties associated with anti-smoking legislation in South Africa, including hefty fines for both the smoker and venue operator. Be aware that smoking is banned on all domestic flights in South Africa. Keep a look out for ‘no smoking’ signs and only smoke in designated smoking areas.
