Thank you for taking the time to find out more about Ullswater Community College. I couldn’t be more proud to be the Headteacher of such a wonderful and vibrant school. Our students are our greatest asset and we make no apologies for expecting the very best from them in terms of effort and behaviour. This prospectus contains plenty of useful information and much more is available from our website – www.ullswatercc.co.uk. Our ambition for the school and students is simple – to be the best and to bring out the very best in everyone. Rest assured we will spend every day working towards this goal. We have big plans for the future and the role we can play in being the centre of our community. I thank you in advance for your continued support on behalf of all the students and staff in the school. Mr Gilby

Academic rigour is at the heart of all we do. Our broad and balanced curriculum is unique and built around the core of mathematics and English, science, modern foreign languages and the humanities. Few schools offer such a range of option subjects alongside a wide variety of additional enrichment. We have significant strengths in the arts, sport, personal development and pastoral support programmes.

‘Staff have high expectations of us and we also have high expectations for ourselves. In class and when we study on our own, reading or doing homework, we always want to do our best.’ Year 8 Student

‘I’ve just achieved my Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award - feel so proud of myself. It was such a challenge. I couldn’t have done it without my friends and the staff.’ Year 11 Student

We challenge every member of the Ullswater community to bring the best version of themselves into school every day. In the classroom we demand complete focus from our students so they get as much as they can from every minute. This makes lessons purposeful and supports students in making as much progress as possible. We create opportunities in the classroom, on stage, on the sports field and in the community to take individuals out of their comfort zone. We support everyone in pushing themselves to achieve all they can.

We provide our students with opportunities throughout the year to develop confidence. From day 1 we support every student in becoming an independent, confident young person with an opinion that matters. We work tirelessly to ensure all of our students develop the knowledge, skills and experience they will need to succeed in life, whichever path they choose.

‘We are so pleased to support UCC students by providing work experience - such a crucial part of preparing for the future and the world of work. Always a pleasure.’ Work Experience Partner

We are all leaders at UCC. Every student, member of staff and parent has a role to play in making us the best we can be. We are all role models and challenge each other to do the right thing and look for ways in which we can improve. Our student councils mean that every one of our students has the chance to influence the school and to help us decide on our future direction of travel.

‘The Council is involved in making many decisions that influence not only the school but also the local community. There has been great progress in tackling issues.’ The Head Boy and Girl

Creativity is an enormous part of life at UCC, whether that is being a member of our cheerleading squad; our dance, sport, drama or music groups or simply contributing to the creativity that takes place in the school, every lesson of every day – there’s something for everyone at the school. We would urge you to come to one of our superb musical or theatre performances, watch our successful sports teams in action, hear the recordings our touring musicians made whilst performing to packed audiences abroad. UCC nurtures and encourages the creative skill of our students.

‘Just been & seen a school production of Grease at UCC, it was incredible... What great opportunities students have today from some very talented, enthusiastic and inspirational teachers.’ Parent

Celebrating success is an essential part of what we do. Our prize day is the biggest celebration of the year but we also find ways to celebrate the success and hard work of our students through our many other rewards. Our Year 11 and Year 13 Proms are a chance to recognise the students as they embark on the next chapter of their lives and are always a wonderful spectacle!

‘Prize Day is a wonderful event that exemplifies all that makes us most proud of our students. It celebrates the huge variety of talent, energy and ability they display and is great fun for all involved.’ Governor

‘Today marks the end of another era for my son, as it’s his last day at UCC - just exams to go back in for - the last 7 years have flown by. Thanks to all the fabulous teaching staff past and present for all your hard work and dedication.’ Parent

We want every individual to progress as far as they can during their time in school. As well as academic progress we invest a lot of time in developing the whole person. Every student needs to be safe, happy and successful. That success is about getting every single student to be aware of what they are able to achieve, to raise aspirations and make sure we open as many different doorways into the future as possible.

We work in close partnership with students and parents to support each of our young people at every stage. Our pastoral team works hard to support our students as they confront the serious issues that affect young people today. We are committed to safeguarding, preventing bullying and keeping our school a safe and respectful place, promoting the welfare of all the young people in our charge. We are very proud of our bespoke support for all of our students through our teaching, support and pastoral teams.

‘Since Year 7, I’ve felt really supported. In classes, especially maths, teachers would support each student individually and there is great additional help like revision sessions after-school and in the holidays. There is always someone to go to whether you need help with something like your option choices or something more personal.’ Year 12 Student
