COMMUNITY BENEFIT REPORT

University of Louisville Hospital 530 South Jackson Street Louisville, KY 40202 www.uoflhealthcare.org

University Medical Center (University of Louisville Hospital and the James Graham Brown Cancer Center) is unlike any other organization in the region. We bring together extraordinary people and resources to make leading-edge health care services, education, and research available to the people of Kentucky. It has been a tough couple of years for many sectors of our economy, including health care, yet our community benefit measures in this report are up significantly from 2007. Part of the change is attributed to a reclassification of reporting guidelines, but the overall total reflects an increase in demand for our services. University Medical Center is proud of its mission to serve the community and as Louisville Metro’s best choice in health care:

The choice is clear when it comes to outreach programs. University Medical Center actively supports extending vital health services beyond our campus to make sure those in remote locations have access to the same quality of care. Our mobile mammography unit screens thousands of women each year, reaching those who might otherwise not seek screenings; detection is the best prevention. Our Remote Physician Presence robot network allows UofL Physicians to consult in communities around the state. In most cases, this technology means patients can get specialized expertise while staying at their home hospital. If a higher level of care is needed, the relationship expedites transfers, improves continuity of care, and ultimately delivers better outcomes for the patient. While the dollar figures represented in this report are substantial, the true impact of this report is very personal. In 2008 and 2009, our physicians, nurses, and other staff provided charity care in nearly 100,000 cases (combined total). These are neighbors and family members from every Louisville Metro zip code and many more from outside our city. With the continued support of our community and the Commonwealth of Kentucky, we’ll continue to teach, create the knowledge to heal, and provide the highest quality of care for our community.

The choice is clear when it comes to acute and advanced care. University of Louisville Hospital is a pillar of protection for our community with the region’s only Level I Trauma Center (for adults), dedicated burn unit, epilepsy monitoring unit, psychiatric services, and a stroke center exceeding national standards. The choice is clear when it comes to comprehensive cancer treatments. The multidisciplinary clinics at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center deliver innovative and individualized treatments for every patient. With Kentucky’s high incidence of cancer, the cancer center is leading the way in research to improve outcomes and quality of life.
