“Light is the life in the painting. The room is where the life exists. We build our rooms and God gives them light.

Ida Lorentzen

Ida Lorentzen White Light Ida Lorentzen is a painter of silence Her motif is interiors – empty or sparsely furnished rooms with a subtle play of light and shadow. The spaces may be seen as her representation of mankind’s inner self touched by an outer source of light. Ida Lorentzen was raised and educated in New England and Oslo, and this dualism is continually present in her art work as it contains both a Nordic mystical detachment and an stark American realism. One can see for example references to both the Danish painter Vilhelm Hammershöi (1864-1916) and the American Edward Hopper (1882-1916). Ida Lorentzen was born in New York 1951, and has lived and worked on one of Oslo fjords inner islands since 1974. She studied at Boston University’s School of Fine Arts from 1970 until 1974 and the National Art Academy in Oslo from 1974 until 1979. Both Carl Milles of Millesgården and Ida Lorentzen are among the few in Scandinavian to be awarded the prestigious Purchase Prize from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. Ida Lorentzen has held several solo exhibitions at Tibor de Nagy Gallery, New York; Kunstnerforbundet, Oslo and Babcock Galleries, New York. She has held major museum exhibitions at The National Museum of Women in the Arts, Washington DC; The Nordic Heritage Museum, Seattle; Henie Onstad Kunstsenter Bærum (Oslo); Blaafarveverket, Modum (Oslo); and Rogaland Kunstmuseeum, Stavanger. Works by Ida Lorentzen are on permanent display at the Ida Lorentzen Museum, Blaafarveverket, Modum (Oslo).
