Railtex 2017 Attracts Nearly 10,000 Industry Specialists Welcome to our Railtex 2017 Show Review, offering you a look back onto some of the many highlights of what was another wellreceived industry event. A total of 475 exhibitors took part in this, the thirteenth Railtex: more than at any event in this series over the last decade. 152 companies exhibited for the first time, a sign of a healthy and continually growing market. The show, which returned to the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham from 9 to 11 May, attracted 9,755 attendees. Over 13% of our visitors were non-UK nationals from 50 different countries, whilst almost 100 exhibiting companies came from 23 countries outside of the UK reflecting strong interest both in opportunities in the UK rail market and in the capabilities of the country’s supply sector. This year’s show registered high approval ratings by exhibitors. Ralf Warwel of Stadler Rail said: “We are very happy to exhibit our products at Railtex, this is the first time that we have the chance to introduce our rolling stock to the market in the UK.” Summarising his satisfaction with the exhibition, Luca Giantin of Italian seating manufacturer FISA commented: “The UK is our most important market right now and for this, Railtex is definitely the place to be!” Have a look at our show videos in this Review, which will give you a great idea of 3 exhilarating days at Railtex 2017. We are grateful to all our exhibitors and visitors who made the event what it was; however, a special thanks must go to all our keynote speakers and presenters, many of whom stepped in at the last minute when the snap election meant that some of our original participants were no longer able to attend. Paul Plummer, Chief Executive of the Rail Delivery Group, formally opened Railtex, accompanied by Darren Caplan, Chief Executive of the Railway Industry Association, and Stephen Brooks, Chairman of Mack Brooks Exhibitions, organisers of the event. Paul Plummer also delivered a keynote speech, one of six such presentations in an extensive programme of Railtex supporting activities. There were

further keynote speeches by Dr Francis Paonessa, Managing Director Network Rail Infrastructure Projects, Gordon Wakeford, OF FIC IAL Chair of the Rail Supply Group, discussing SHOW REVIE W the Midlands Engine initiative, and David Clarke, Technical Director at the Railway Infrarail 2018 inside! Industry Association. Professor Andrew McNaughton, Technical Director at HS2 Ltd www.railtex.co.uk made two keynote presentations. Together with technical seminars, project briefings and discussion forums, the programme was the most extensive ever, drawing large audiences throughout all three show days. You will find a great selection of presentation photos as well as recordings in this Review. There was a real buzz throughout all three days of the show. If you were there, you will agree that it looked great, with many fantastic stands, which were always busy. We thank everyone involved for playing their part in making Railtex 2017 such a successful and enjoyable event. Our focus is now on Infrarail: during Railtex many exhibitors already reserved their stands at Mack Brooks’ next UK rail show, Infrarail 2018, the UK’s definitive rail infrastructure event. The twelfth in this successful series of exhibitions takes place at ExCeL London from 1 to 3 May next year and will include the CITE Hub for companies supplying products and services for the wider civil infrastructure sector. For more information visit www.infrarail.com or contact my team who will be happy to help you. Thank you for your continued support – I hope you enjoy the Railtex 2017 Review. RAILTEX 2017 SHOW REVIEW

WWW.INFRARAIL.COM now live

Joining forces at Railtex This year the Rail Forum East Midlands were planning their return to Railtex with initial plans for a modest exhibition space. However, this quickly evolved as the Forum joined forces with member companies Design & Analysis Ltd, Datum Ltd, Birley Manufacturing Ltd and the University of Derby, to assemble a stand complete with 3D printing, virtual reality kit, a toilet module and cab front. Thus, it would be fair to say that the Rail Forum East Midlands stand was a hive of activity! The concept enabled businesses, who may not have exhibited in their own right, the opportunity to have a strong presence at the show, as well as get to know one another and learn about the other companies’ offerings. Delegates from the exhibiting organisations joined the Forum team each day, and a selection of other member companies came aboard as and when they were able. All those who attended commented that they had gained significant leads and made good contacts during their time at the show, and all have agreed to return for Railtex 2019. The Rail Forum East Midlands is a trade 14

organisation with over 150 member companies nationwide. The Rail Forum brings together rail businesses with national and regional government to grow exports, encourage innovation and create skilled employment. The Forum team also host and attend a variety of events each year to promote members’ capabilities, share industry knowledge and facilitate business-to-business networking. The Rail Forum would like to thank the Mack Brooks team for their support and guidance on the lead up to, and during, this year’s exhibition!

The Platform sessions: It’s time for rail to come together By Luana Salles, assistant editor, Rail Technology Magazine (RTM) Although RTM’s Platform sessions at this year’s three-day Railtex were wide-ranging in theme and speakers, one golden thread stitched them all together in message: collaborative working, especially with the supply chain and third-party funders, will be more important than ever in the coming years of Brexit, devolution and austerity. As ever, our team was present at the UK’s largest

rail exhibition at a stand firmly planted just right of the main entrance. But this year, like with Infrarail in 2016, we also hosted three Platform sessions that each featured a high-profile panel of speakers suited to debate major emerging themes in the industry: the government’s ongoing industrial strategy, rail infrastructure investment and the Midlands Engine. The first of these brought together NSAR’s Shamit Grainger, Elaine Clark of Rail Forum East Midlands, the Rail Industry Association’s David Clarke and Rail Supply Group chair Gordon Wakeford. And their message to the next government, whatever its colour, was clear: the industrial strategy, which has been delayed by the general election, must enable a sustainable rail supply chain that avoids the ‘feast or famine’ scenarios of the past. Clarke argued that the cycling peak and trough situation the industry is used to means suppliers have struggled to invest in the areas that drive productivity – but the strategy, alongside continued investment in major projects like HS2, provide an invaluable opportunity to change this outlook. Both he and Wakeford revealed that their organisations are working closely to try and create the right environment for a vibrant supply chain. A key tenet to achieving this vision is ensuring the industry speaks with one voice. This message of unity was carried onto the second day’s Platform, which saw RTM sitting down with Rail North’s David Hoggarth, Network Rail’s Crossrail 2 boss Chris Curtis and Amey’s Tim Wood. There is no doubt that delivering projects using deep alliances between contractors and

suppliers, similar to what will be trialled with East West Rail, produces better results, they all agreed. Based on the schemes he’s been personally involved with over the last 20 years, Curtis argued that working closer together almost always yields more successful outcomes. For Hoggarth, a clear example of that is the Ordsall Chord, the ongoing infrastructure project in the heart of Manchester whose enviable track record – on time and on budget since kick-off – owes much to the innovative alliance structure in place between Network Rail and its suppliers. Speakers during the third day’s session, which aimed to highlight the emerging goals and ambitions of the Midlands, where Railtex itself took place, agreed. Its five panel members – Maria Machancoses of Midlands Connect, Malcolm Holmes of West Midlands Rail, Prof Herve Morvan of the University of Nottingham, Chris Skilton of Network Rail and David Ralph of D2N2 – all voiced a need to develop a supply chain that is flexible, can cope with change and engages with

18

RAILTEX 2017 SHOW REVIEW

the sector at every level. Machancoses, who guaranteed that the region “knows what it needs and is working towards it”, also stressed the importance of understanding how businesses connect together so that the Midlands can have more of a say on how much private investment takes place. Holmes then revealed that West Midlands Rail will be looking at how to use third-party funding to drive greater productivity. The region’s remarkable heritage also creates opportunities for true cross-sector innovation and collaboration, said Prof Morvan, and it is on this relationship that the Midlands must prop up a truly integrated model of working – with a defined common goal for all parties involved. With the UK readying to leave the European Union – despite its population still being in the dark over which government will be at the helm during this intricate process – it’s nearly impossible to predict the exact challenges rail industry organisations will face over the coming years. But one thing is for certain: they won’t be doing it alone.

A positive and enthusiastic atmosphere at Railtex Sponsoring Railtex for the first time under the fresh, British Steel brand, our Rail team was proud to provide the venue with 2x15m track panels of Zinoco® HP335 rail with steel sleepers painted in our corporate molten orange colour. The team enjoyed lots of interesting and insightful discussions with a range of people across the industry, from consultant to buyer. Our Marketing Manager Daniel Pyke also delivered a presentation, as part of the Rail Media seminar programme. ‘Smart Steel for Sustainable Systems’ covered the areas of combatting corrosion to extending grooved rail life. Attending Railtex to showcase our products provides us with a great opportunity for networking with a really positive and enthusiastic atmosphere. On-track, we wanted to highlight the benefits of our Rail Technologies business, so we had some of our guys in PPE doing on-track inspections. This generated a lot of interest and gave us the opportunity to explain the process of testing and

maintaining rail track. Our problem-solving products were of interest to purchaser and rail engineer alike as they help to tackle industry challenges such as noise, corrosion, wear and rolling-contact fatigue. A busy and exhausting three days, but extremely valuable. As always, Railtex proved a key event to reinforce our position as a supplier of sustainable, premium steel solutions to the UK market. We look forward to attending the next event.

Fantastic time at Railtex The Rail Supply Group (RSG) had a fantastic time at Railtex this year. As the leadership body for the Rail Supply sector, it is vitally important that we have as much contact time with other bodies and suppliers in the industry as possible, and events such as Railtex give us the perfect opportunity to do this. Over three days, we met with delegates from across the rail sector and from a number of Government departments, including the Department for Transport and the Cabinet Office, and spoke to delegates from across the country – and indeed across the world – about who RSG are and how we can help the UK rail supply chain. Our stand was simple but effective. We hosted an interactive engagement board which was split into four categories – Innovation, Driving Growth, Developing Skills and Supporting Exports, each of these representing an RSG workstream. We then handed out large post-it notes to passing delegates and asked them to answer the question “what will help your business grow?” By the third day, the board was a colourful galaxy of post-it notes, each one displaying a message from a different individual in the industry. We made it clear from

the outset that there was no such thing as a wrong answer – the exercise was about hearing the beliefs of others, not imposing our own. We will now work with each of our workstreams to address the issues raised by delegates. A huge thanks again to all the organisers of Railtex and RSG look forward to taking part again in 2018. In the meantime, keep up to date with the latest RSG news and developments here. The Rail Supply Group (RSG) is the leadership body for the rail supply sector uniquely bringing together Government and the private sector to champion the rail supply chain. Formed in 2014, RSG is the only rail body to have members from Government and the private sector focussing on supporting the rail supply chain from SMEs to multi-national companies in every part of the United Kingdom. RSG collaborates with the UK rail supply industry in its entirety, with the organisation’s work split across four workstreams: Innovation; Driving Growth; Developing Skills and Supporting Exports. RSG is also working to ensure that the rail supply sector is a key consideration in the Industrial Strategy, in order to help economic growth and UK productivity.

Railtex 2017 and the Railway Industry Association Railtex 2017 proved to be the most successful yet for the Railway Industry Association (RIA). As the leading organisation for UK-based railway suppliers, it is no surprise that RIA has had a front role in the UK’s two principal rail events; Railtex and Infrarail. RIA has exhibited at every edition of the two shows and has gradually become more and more involved, but Railtex 2017 saw the strongest level of engagement ever. A comprehensive programme of RIA activity included: • Promotion of Railtex to member companies and others, using newsletters, emails, website links etc. • RIA Chief Executive Darren Caplan joined Rail Supply Group CEO Paul Plummer and Mack Brooks Chairman Stephen Brooks in the official opening of the event, with the subsequent official tour also co-ordinated by RIA. • RIA’s own specially-designed stand, prominently located by the entrance. • Organisation and management of the Railtex Knowledge Hub, with key industry officials and experts presenting on a wide range of topics. • Working closely in partnership with the Department for International Trade to organise exports support activity, focussed around a ‘Meet the Overseas Rail Trade Adviser’ event. • As an active part of the Rail Supply Group, helping to organise RSG’s own stand and activities.

• Organising an evening networking reception for Association members and guests. All this activity was not without its challenges, particularly when an unexpected General Election was called which meant that Government Ministers and Officials were obliged to pull out of commitments to participate. However the resilience of careful planning with a few rapid adjustments meant that a full programme was maintained. And, at the end of the day, Railtex 2017 very definitely justified all this effort. The show itself was tremendous, with more exhibitors than expected, including most of the leading companies in the sector and featuring a very wide range of products, technologies and services. The number of visitors also well met expectations, so much so that additional publicity material had to be sent out for before the end of day one! The high calibre of visitors and the number of leads generated was also notable. The programme of presentations at the Knowledge Hub went flawlessly, all drawing significant audiences and being well-received. The exports supports activity also went well with some 176 appointments arranged for more than 50 UK companies with DIT trade officials from around the world. Finally, RIA’s own reception was undoubtedly the most successful yet held at the NEC. RIA looks forward to Infrarail 2018 and Railtex 2019!

The Railway Industry Association supported Railtex with their own stand as well as being involved in the Knowledge Hub presentations, the Opening Ceremony and the Official Tour (here RIA’s Chief Executive Darren Caplan with Paul Plummer of the Rail Delivery Group)

Round-up from Railtex 2017

Is Rail lagging other industries in terms of technology adoption? Brendan Morris, CEO of 3DVSL and mobile simulator solutions experts for the Rail Industry sums up his views on Railtex 2017 This year’s Railtex was different to previous years. It was much busier and the range of exhibitors and attendees was quite different. It was surprising that Bombardier didn’t attend, however there was definitely an excellent range of manufacturers exhibiting their new innovations and designs.

As a technology company developing innovative training and marketing mobile and simulation solutions for the rail industry, we were interested in how people saw future evolution of the technology. The feedback from visitors to the Hitachi stand commented on how slow the industry moves when adopting new technologies.

What’s interesting though, is that the rail industry is not a slow adopter. Many other industries that I’ve looked at (and worked in) are much further behind and in many ways rail is well advanced or leading the way in using technology for training. Feedback on our training solutions was very positive, individuals loved the fact that they could experience the features of the new train in a simulation environment on their phones and tablets. We launched our new Virtual Reality model at the show this year which went down a storm! Conversations around Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) were interesting. The industry is just starting to wake up to these types of technologies, (especially the application of Virtual Reality) but they still have a long way to go before they are widely used in the industry. We saw lots of VR and AR solutions on stands but it was being used for marketing purposes, rather than any killer apps! I’m sure things will be significantly different this time next year! Now that my feet have had a chance to recover, I’m off to follow up on some of the interesting conversations I had last month. We’d like to extend our thanks to Hitachi for inviting us to exhibit alongside their team on their stand. It would be great to hear your thoughts of Railtex 2017. Did you think the show demonstrated lots of new innovative solutions? What about advancements in technology – is the industry moving quickly enough?

Railtex Review Railtex 2017, staged at the Birmingham NEC between 9th and 11th May, was the thirteenth in the series, and arguably one of the most successful. This year the world came to Railtex. 13% of the nearly 10,000 visitors came from overseas while almost 100 of the 475 exhibitors were based abroad, and that doesn’t include the UK-based subsidiaries of foreign corporations. 23 countries were represented at the show, while visitors came from over 50. rail industry blowing its own trumpet so that the public knew more about the efforts being made. “We need many voices lobbying for the sector,” he told the audience. “The more voices we have the better. The trick is to make sure they are complementary.”

Once again, there was a lot for visitors to see. The stands of course, over 380 of them, plus two seminar theatres, one networking area, a press office and a recruitment wall.

Grand opening and keynotes It all started on the Tuesday morning. Stephen Brooks, chairman of exhibition organiser Mack Brooks, welcomed visitors to what he termed “the leading event for the railway industry in the UK”. He was joined in welcoming visitors by Darren Kaplan, the new chief executive of the Railway Industry Association. He spoke of the

need to be working as one railway, as one team working together, competing together, to enable innovation, for customers and for the economy, because Britain does run on rail. Paul Plummer was also the first of the show’s keynote speakers, a little later in the morning. He commented on how people, both passengers and the public at large, saw the industry. “They see things not being joined up, they see things being inconsistent, so we need to address that. We need to coordinate and present a more common narrative about the future of the railway.” Gordon Wakeford, chairman of the Rail Supply Group, also spoke on the opening day, but in the Knowledge Hub rather than the seminar theatre. “We have a lot to celebrate in today’s railway,” he began. “124,000 people employed in our industry, turning over some £7 billion per annum and adding valu e of £3.8 billion. That’s something we should really be proud of as UK Rail.” The keynote speaker on day two was Dr Francis Paonessa, managing director of Network Rail’s

Keynote speaker Andrew McNaughton, technical director of HS2, was a busy man on Thursday. He had to deliver his own speech in the Seminar Theatre, during which he covered the reasons behind the HS2 project and its current progress, then hot-foot it down to the Knowledge Hub. There he replaced the DfT’s HS2 representative, cancelled due to the election campaign, to speak about how the contracts for the construction had been or would be awarded, and how the project would go forward.

Theatres and presentations As in previous years, Railtex 2017 had two theatres where visitors could hear talks from experts in the industry. The Seminar Theatre, sponsored and organised by Rail Engineer, gave 21 companies a platform to present their latest innovations. All were exhibitors, and they ranged from the largest companies, such as Alstom, Siemens and Hitachi,

to the smallest. There were presentations on subjects as diverse as trains, track, drones, BIM, adhesives, Wi-Fi and electrification. At the other end of the show, the Knowledge Hub was backed by the Railway Industry Association. Here, project teams could report on their latest milestones and industry figures spoke on topics as diverse as middle-east projects, railway technology, skills, better behaviour, diversity and logistics. ‘The Platform’ panel sessions, arranged by Rail Technology Magazine, addressed productivity and industrial strategy, rail infrastructure and the Midlands Engine.

Shell-schemes and space-only But an exhibition is really all about the exhibitors. At Railtex 2017 there were 475 of them on 380 stands, with 150 being first-timers. There were the usual last-minute panics, but all was ready for the doors to open at 10am on the Tuesday. It would not be possible to review all 475 in this publication. However, a number of those exhibitors have provided information on their stands, displays and successes, so here they are. For fairness, they are in alphabetical order, the small companies with shell-scheme stands mixed in with the larger ones and their bespoke offerings costing multi-thousands. It was all part of the mix that was Railtex 2017. ABG Geosynthetics saw a lot of interest in its Fildrain 7DD system to aid consolidation in earthworks. Widely used in the highways and other sectors, Fildrain is far easier to install than traditional gravel solutions, and reduces consolidation times by up to 80 per cent. ABG’s presence at Railtex resulted in requests from a

ArcelorMittal, the world`s leading integrated steel and mining company, received a steady flow of visitors throughout the three days of Railtex, obtaining enquiries across a number of product segments. With the recent enhancement of a new state of the art rolling mill at its Gijon facility, and further substantial ongoing investment with the mill extension in order to produce long rail lengths up to 108 metres, ArcelorMittal is fully geared to play a major part in the UK and European markets. On the IT front, company representatives from the UK and Spain introduced a new rail tool offering dimensional information, sectional profiles and an easy reference ‘length versus weight’ guide for all transport, groove, light and crane rails. Ballyclare used the show to reinforce its Network Rail win for waterproof and flame retardant garments. Also on show were the company’s brand new multinorm garments – DFRShell – giving true multi-hazard protection as they are the only high visibility RIS-3279-TOM garments available that are fully waterproof, breathable, flame retardant, anti-static and antiarcing. Bally Bear made a splash both at the show and on social media. 70 per cent of the visitors to the stand were new leads, interested in taking conversations forward over the coming weeks and months. Bender UK unveiled its next-generation rail signalling protection device and customers old and new visited the stand, eager to see the new RS4 which has been designed to comply with the latest standards. Based on earlier variants which have been proven in use by Network Rail, delivering vital information on the status of power supplies, the RS4 will be supplied tested and ready for easy

Brady Corporation, the identification specialist, presented its range of automated print-and-apply systems for durable cable sleeves and labels. The BSP45 Automated Sleeve Applicator prints and applies dieselresistant, halogen-free sleeves a lot faster than the manual process widely used today, while the Wraptor Printer Applicator can do the same, but for self-laminating labels instead of sleeves. Using the manufacturer’s Data Automation app, serialisation and barcode data can be fed to both printer-applicators from a range of ERP-systems in order to largely automate cable identification, increase production output, and significantly decrease the applied cost of labels and sleeves.

At Railtex, the company offered innovative solutions to train maintenance depots for HV switchgear interlocking and trapped-key interlock access. Based on the Dold STS system, this flexible and compact modular system is very robust, easy to operate and enables safe interlocked access to hazardous areas. Dold offers depot managers and safety personnel a free assessment and key exchange plan options, which enables the system to be easily and ergonomically integrated into existing depot facilities. Edesix, a market leader in the provision of body-worn camera solutions, showcased how body cameras can tackle abusive and criminal behaviour. Sadly, both verbal and physical attacks onboard UK trains and surrounding station areas are on the rise. Richie McBride, managing director of Edesix, commented that body worn cameras are a proven way of tackling abuse for rail operators. “Body cams have been proven to change the behaviour of the public toward officers to a significant extent, helping to calm potentially aggressive confrontations and reducing incidents of violence. Also, not all stations have CCTV in place, and even where there are fixed cameras, body cams provide operators with the flexibility to move through the station and get on and off trains knowing there are no gaps in the coverage they can achieve.” ENAG, a first-time exhibitor at Railtex, received a great reception from rail depot engineers and technicians pleased to see a line of rugged battery chargers, dischargers and power supplies specially designed to meet their requirements. Intended for use in depots, ENAG equipment can

be custom-made to suit a particular application by varying the output voltage/charging current, battery type and connectors. Fenix Signalling managing director Craig Purcell was pleased with the success of Railtex. “It gave us the opportunity to chat informally to many of our existing clients as well as reacquainting with former contacts and meeting new people and organisations,” he commented. “We were excited and surprised with how busy we were over the three days. It was a fantastic event and the team here at Fenix Signalling will build on these opportunities in the months ahead.” FISA (Fabbrica Italiana Sedili Autoferroviari) used Railtex to promote its new showroom in Derby. With the UK having unique crashworthiness and fire-retardation requirements, the Italian seat manufacturer has now successfully passed a testing process to become a supplier to the UK market. This has resulted in FISA’s largest ever order from Stadler Bussnang – for 23,000 seats for the fleet of trains being manufactured for Abellio East Anglia. Flexicon debuted its Ultra™ Demonstrator at Railtex. Designed to demonstrate the superior Ingress Protection performance offered by Flexicon’s cable protection, it uses Ultra fittings with three conduit systems. Subjected to dynamic load and continuous movement over the three days of the show, whilst submerged in a water tank, the conduits moved mesmerizingly back and forth. Thankfully, nobody was hypnotised by the movement of the conduits, but many people were impressed by its performance! Now with PADS approval, Ultra is ideal for protecting performance and safety critical cabling within the rail industry.

Spouts, trains and batteries Hepworth’s new filler spout (2101-WASH), manufactured in 316 stainless steel, has been precision designed and engineered in order to prevent the commonly occurring damage to standard caps. Broken cap chains, damaged hinges and missing caps are some of the issues which have long-term cost implications and these can now be prevented; the simple push and pull hinge handle makes the cap simple to use. The spout can be used for diesel, toilets, waste, wash fluid and water applications. Since the launch of the spout, Hepworth has parts being assessed for trial with Alstom in the UK and parts ordered for Vivarail. Hitachi’s stand included Ansaldo-STS signalling, and there were plenty of models of trains and other bits of kit to look at. They held a nice reception on the Wednesday night as well.

Hoppecke Industrial Batteries – the leading specialist in industrial battery systems and the largest battery manufacturer in European ownership – used Railtex-branded bears to raise

£1,000 for Mental Health Awareness Week at the show. The company asked visitors to its stand to make a voluntary donation to obtain one of its famous bears, which had been given a limited edition Railtex makeover. The original 300 branded bears went so fast that another 100 standard bears had to be brought in to cope with demand! Jason Howlett, Hoppecke’s regional managing director – Northern Europe, said: “Not only were we able to demonstrate our great products – including the new high voltage lithium battery – and make lots of great leads at Railtex as usual, but people couldn’t get enough of our bears and we are delighted to have raised this money for such a worthy organisation as the Mental Health Foundation.” Lindapter launched its new Type HD brochure and showcased its range of adjustable steelwork fixings that provide a faster alternative to drilling or welding, saving contractors’ time and money. Over the course of the three days, Lindapter demonstrated its product capabilities in a range of connection applications such as overhead

line equipment, station buildings, station fittings, facades, depots, low speed rails, rail bridges, access walkways and structural reinforcement. Type HD is used to secure sections of rail or crane lines in low speed applications such as ground track, elevated rail and overhead gantries. Lindapter’s rail clip features a rotatable central component that provides lateral adjustability. It allows contractors to quickly and precisely align rails before securing them in position using standard hand tools. The clamps have high resistance to lateral loads and they are manufactured from SG iron with a range of protective coatings available. The new brochure uses real-life case studies to demonstrate how the range of Type HD clamps provide a quick way to align and secure low speed rails, providing a strong, reliable and long-lasting connection. Mabey displayed the world’s first modular glass-fibre, reinforced polymer bridge, which was recently launched in conjunction with Arup under the brand name Pedesta™. Part-funded by RSSB, the modular bridge will be of particular interest to the rail industry, providing a safer alternative to level crossings where traditional pedestrian bridges cannot be installed. Pre-engineered and fully customisable in its form, material and finish, the Pedesta is 70% per cent lighter than steel, enabling faster, safer and more efficient project delivery. Mabey Bridge CEO Michael Treacy commented: “What we have developed from Arup’s concept will change the game for our customers who tell us cost and easeof-use come first.” Moxa´s products are used in many different areas and applications in the field. talk to managers, developers, system integrators and users first-hand at Railtex is a great boon to giving wide and deep views of the industry and opens up those tracks and leads to follow that can so easily be missed. This year, Moxa released two new key products to the UK rail market. The live demonstration for one of them, an IP67 rated, full HD, day and night IP camera suitable for external on-board train surveillance for applications such as Driver Controlled Operation (DCO) or pantograph monitoring, attracted much attention. The camera was shown working live in a fish tank with water fountain and floating rubber duck, all to showcase the ruggedisation and IP rating. The second new product, a multiple wireless WAN communications router providing a combination of up to four Wi-Fi or cellular connections, was not so ingeniously displayed but still well received. Railtex 2017 saw the launch of the new Pensar camera, which features inbuilt data-processing technology that uses image recognition to intelligently analyse images. This opens up a range of possibilities in how infrastructure can be inspected in the future, which was the theme of ‘Intelligent Drones, Intelligent Infrastructure’, one of the presentations in the Rail Engineer Seminar Theatre.

The Pulsar® Ladies range was launched, as was the new range of Active High Visibility Clothing, incorporating LED technology to enhance the visibility of the wearer in low or poor lighting conditions. Both these new products were well received, and judging by the number of catalogues taken and leads received, there appeared to be a high level of interest in the entire collection. Rainford Solutions presented two of its rail cabinets on stand K65 – a new three-bay cabinet with IP65 protection which is currently awaiting PADS approval and a Vanguard® single bay cabinet with heat management, designed to meet IP55 protection. unique networking opportunities and featured an exciting programme of seminars. Overall, Railtex was a success for the Rainford team, generating new business enquiries, making new contacts and raising the company’s profile whilst learning all of the latest developments taking place within the rail industry. Rail Forum East Midlands, which now over 150 member companies nationwide, initially planned to return to Railtex with modest exhibition space. However, this quickly evolved as the Forum joined forces with member companies Design & Analysis Ltd, Datum Ltd, Birley Manufacturing Ltd and the University of Derby to assemble a stand complete with 3D printing, virtual reality kit, a toilet module and cab front. Thus, it would be fair to say that the Rail Forum East Midlands stand was a hive of activity! The concept enabled businesses, who may not have exhibited in their own right, the opportunity to have a strong presence at the show, and learn about each other’s offerings in more detail. Delegates from the exhibiting organisations joined

the Forum team each day, and a selection of other member companies came aboard as and when they were able. All those we spoke to commented that they had gained significant leads during their time at the show, and all have agreed to return for Railtex 2019. Rail Media’s stand was mostly given over to promote the RailSort Games. Coming up in July, this will pit railway companies against each other in ‘the Olympics of Rail’. Held at world-famous Loughborough University, it will be popular with spectators as well as sports enthusiasts. On the stand itself, visitors could have a go at darts (one of the RailSport games) as well as talk with writers from both RailStaff and Rail Engineer magazines. Rosehill Rail, the leading level crossing

systems provider, generated a lot of interest from UK and international companies for its new Interlocking RRAP system and its innovative new rubber edge beam at this year’s Railtex.

Designed specifically to accommodate irregular sleeper spacing, the Interlocking RRAP system is ideal for permanent, semi-permanent and temporary road/ rail access points allowing RRVs and other heavy machinery easy access to the track again and again. Reflecting on a busy show, Rosehill Rail’s UK sales executive Daniel Snell said: “From the conversations we’ve had it’s clear that engineers are looking for innovative new products which help them improve efficiency and reliability, while minimising disruption and cost. Our new rubber edge beam is a good example of this. By incorporating a service void, it helps to overcome the challenges of running cables at level crossings, ensuring cables are completely protected from accidental damage and vandalism, while allowing for ease of access to maintenance teams.”

Highlights included the new rack-mounted modular UPS – Modulys GP. This is a threephase modular UPS system designed for 19” rack integration across multiple applications. Easy to integrate and install whilst simple to manage and maintain, it provides maximum availability and power protection in a compact design – leaving space for other rack-mounted devices. With ongoing investment in switchgear development, the Socomec Automatic Transfer Switch (ATyS) monitors the power supply to a critical system and – in case of failure – manages the transfer to the backup supply. It has been approved by London Underground for use as an integral part of a complete system in conjunction with AF Switchgear. Having enjoyed a successful start with the previous TH2 model, this lighting innovation has now been significantly re-designed and upgraded to produce the new TH200. It boasts a continuous runtime of 120 hours using the four on-board hydrogen cylinders. Unitrunk’s stand at Railtex was significantly larger than it has been at similar exhibitions in the past due to a drive to prioritise the rail industry as a key sector for growth. This follows the installation of Unitrunk systems on high-profile projects such the tunnels connecting Heathrow Express to the airport and numerous London Underground schemes. All of Unitrunk’s cable ladder, cable tray, cable basket, channel and trunking systems, which were on display, are London Underground (approved and suitable for use on both trackside and station installations across the Network Rail infrastructure. The company’s EasyConnect cable basket, which has been re-engineered to provide tool-free installation without the need for couplers, proved especially interesting to visitors as it offers a robust and vibration-resistant solution that can reduce installation times by as much as a third. operator South West Trains, which refused to give them back at the end of the trial. Now that’s a recommendation! The company also celebrated its 150th anniversary – and there was cake! Wavetrain aims to providing secure and affordable level crossing safety by ease of installation, use and maintenance. Its Level Crossing Warning System (LCWS) is an end-to-end SIL 2 certified product that detects approaching trains using SIL 4 certified acoustic sensors. The acoustic sensors are mounted on the rails and listen for the distinct sound waves generated by approaching trains. The digital data is analysed by a nearby control unit, which activates the customer’s preferred warning devices at the appropriate time. York EMC Services was delighted to be able to talk to visitors about having added Radio testing to its list of UKAS accredited testing capabilities. With the advent of new and shifting technologies, not to mention changes in the use of the electromagnetic spectrum, the rail regulatory landscape is changing all the time. More and more embedded wireless technologies (intentional transmitters) are being used in railway apparatus and infrastructure, so the need for York EMC Services testing and consultancy services, such as

EMC management and control plans, is becoming increasingly critical in ensuring that the railways are functional and safe. Zonegreen launched its new Points Converter, designed to power manual hand points within depots and sidings. The company reported that interest in its stand was unprecedented, and has led to numerous feasibility meetings being arranged for the forthcoming weeks. Zonegreen felt that Railtex was an ideal place to introduce its new technology and to reinforce the presence of its market-leading depot protection system.

Next? Infrarail So that was Railtex 2017, a gathering of the railway industry. In just under twelve months’ time, everyone can do it all again as the focus moves to Infrarail 2018. During Railtex, many exhibitors reserved their stands at Mack Brooks’ next UK rail show, the UK’s definitive rail infrastructure event. The twelfth in this successful series of exhibitions takes place at ExCeL London from 1 to 3 May next year and will include the CITE Hub for companies supplying products and services for the wider civil infrastructure sector.

Fisa lands in the UK The UK railway industry is leading the way in Europe in terms of the volume of investments and number of planned projects. The unique safety requirements of the UK in respect of crashworthiness and fire, has motivated FISA to carry out and successfully pass the testing process based on standard GM/RT2100 on its already proven passenger seat series. With the UK rail industry having many different customers, such as the TOC’s, Rosco’s, new build and refurbishment companies and of course the travelling passenger, led FISA to focus its attention in the UK with the opening of its own showroom in Derby, which is one of the historical hearts of Britain’s railway, this coupled with support from UK companies who are already established in the industry, gives FISA the advantage of local supply and after sale product service, which is considered paramount in this ever demanding market. FISA, now has a solid base to operate from, therefore creating the alternative passenger and driver seat supplier based in the UK dedicated to the UK market. THE UK’S DEFINIT Infrarail, the UK’s only trade exhibition dedicated to rail infrastructure, once again offers an outstanding meeting place for the industry’s entire management and supplier chain at the UK capital’s showpiece exhibition venue – ExCeL London – in 2018. Infrarail 2018 will have a firm eye on the future of the UK’s rail network, bringing together leading authorities, thinkers, legislators and engineers at all levels of supply and management to inspire the development of rail infrastructure for now and into the future.

“Infrarail provided us again with an excellent opportunity to raise our profile” Alison Stansfield, Marketing Director, Permanent Way Institution

Infrarail is the country’s only dedicated showcase for systems, equipment and services that meet the wide-ranging needs of the railway infrastructure market. Covering the entire supply chain, the show embraces civil engineering, track, signalling & communications and electrification equipment, services and ancillary products – as well as the many other specialised solutions and skills essential for the safe and efficient operation of today’s networks. This is a busy, exciting and challenging market. As well as oncein a-generation projects like the HS2 high-speed line, numerous large-scale investments are being targeted at enhancing the performance of the existing system and modernising its assets in preparation for future demand. Add to this longer term schemes like London’s Crossrail 2, and there are clearly great business opportunities for suppliers for many years ahead. With strong support from all organisations shaping the UK’s rail industry and a huge programme of accompanying educational seminars and events, this 12th Infrarail will build on its established track record and successful format by providing a unique face to face meeting place for companies to understand new demands, present their latest innovations, make connections and do real business.

CIVIL INFRASTRUCTURE & TECHNOLOGY EXHIBITS Companies specialising in products and services for the civil infrastructure technology sector extending beyond and interconnected with rail are offered a fantastic opportunity to exhibit in a dedicated area within Infrarail – the CITE Hub. Situating the CITE Civil Infrastructure & Technology Exhibits within the Infrarail show reflects the connected technology and planning necessary for fully integrated transport infrastructure to meet future needs. The CITE Hub is aimed specifically at companies supplying construction products and services, contracting skills, geotechnical expertise, tunnelling, and road infrastructure requirements plus the equipment, materials and products needed to complete large projects.

Tomorrow’s protection testing, today! As a power systems engineer it’s essential that I keep up to date with what’s going on in the market and what our customers need. Based on this, I am constantly looking for better ways of doing things. Take our simulation-based protection testing solution; now even complex networks can be tested automatically from a single point of control. This allows a comprehensive assessment of the entire protection scheme, taking into account the settings and functionality of the individual relays. www.omicronenergy.com/protection
