Fairtrade The Fairtrade Foundation is an independent nonprofit organisation that licenses use of the FAIRTRADE Mark on products in the UK. It was established in 1992. The Fairtrade Foundation is a member of Fairtrade Labelling Organisations International (FLO) which unites the Fairtrade bodies of 21 countries, and producer networks from Africa, Asia and Latin America. Fairtrade works in a few ways: It guarantees that the workers have decent working conditions and are paid the national minimum wage. For organic tea, the growers and buyers must negotiate a price, which under Fairtrade standards must cover the cost of sustainable production. Buyers must pay an additional Fairtrade premium. This is paid to a Joint Body which is made up of management and elected workers. The Joint Body decides on the social development projects of benefit to the workers and their communities in which the premium funds will be invested. The Luponde estate has been certified Fairtrade since 1994. Part of the premium is being used to build a school for 300 children and to help run the hospital. Companies that market Fairtrade products in the UK pay a licence fee to the Fairtrade Foundation for use of the FAIRTRADE Mark, which goes towards the costs of certification and to promote Fairtrade.
