voorwoord introduction

Stad van hoogtepunten. Het is nogal wat om dat over je eigen stad te zeggen. Voor Zwollenaren voelt het misschien wat ongemakkelijk om dat hardop te zeggen, bescheiden als we soms zijn.

Als burgemeester durf ik te zeggen dat het waar is. Zwolle is een bijzondere stad, met heel veel hoogtepunten: een fantastische gastvrije binnenstad, waar voor ieder wat te beleven is. Het kloppend hart van Zwolle. We leven in een waterrijke stad, die prachtig ligt in het landschap, dat met haar groene vingers ver de stad in reikt. Dankzij de ligging op een knooppunt van wegen, spoorlijnen en rivieren is Zwolle ook een goed bereikbare stad.

En dat is wat dit boek op een fantastische manier in beeld brengt, met fraaie foto’s van Ben Vulkers en goedgekozen teksten van Harold de Haan.

Maar wat Zwolle echt bijzonder maakt dat zie je niet vanuit de lucht. Dat zijn de mensen hier, die oog én hart hebben voor elkaar, die naar elkaar omzien en klaar staan om de ander te helpen. Die mensen maken met elkaar Zwolle tot een fijne en sociale stad, waar iedereen een thuis vindt en iedereen die dat wil mee kan doen. En waar we samen werken aan een duurzame ontwikkeling. Zodat ook komende generaties hier graag wonen, werken, leren en op bezoek komen. Ik vind het een eer dat ik burgemeester van die stad mag zijn.

City of highlights. That’s quite a statement to make about your own city. People from Zwolle tend to be pretty modest, so it might feel a bit uncomfortable to say that out loud.

As the mayor, I’ll dare to say it’s true. Zwolle is a special city, with lots of highlights: a fantastic hospitable city centre, which is an experience for everyone, as the city’s beating heart. We live in a water-rich city, beautifully situated in a landscape with green fingers that reaches deep into the city. Thanks to its location where roads, railway lines and rivers converge, Zwolle is also an easily accessible city.

Which is just what this book does a fantastic job of depicting, with beautiful photographs by Ben Vulkers and nicely crafted texts by Harold de Haan.

What Zwolle makes so special isn’t something you can see from the air: it’s the way people here keep an eye on each other, care about and look after each other, and are willing to help others. Together, the people make Zwolle a pleasant and sociable city where everyone feels at home and everyone who wants to, can be part of it. A place where we are working together for sustainable development, so future generations will also be able to enjoy living, working, learning and visiting our Zwolle. I am honoured to be mayor of such a city.

Erfgoed en cultuur

Van Sassenpoort tot Peperbus, van Grote Kerk tot begraafplaats Kranenburg – Zwolle is met 481 Rijksmonumenten zeer rijk aan erfgoed. Erfgoed dat de historie van de stad in al zijn glorie toont. Ook cultuur is goed vertegenwoordigd, of het nu gaat om poppodium Hedon of museum De Fundatie, wie al dat schoons in Zwolle bezoekt, komt ogen en oren tekort.

Heritage and culture

From Sassenpoort to Peperbus, from the Grote Kerk to Kranenburg Cemetery: Zwolle’s 481 national heritage items are a rich collection – heritage that shows the city’s history in all its glory. Culture is also wellrepresented: whether it’s for the pop venue Hedon or the museum De Fundatie, there’s so much beauty in Zwolle for visitors’ eyes and ears to feast on.

Peperbus

Het mag gerust een van de iconen van Zwolle genoemd worden, de Peperbus in het hart van de stad. De toren is onderdeel van de Basiliek van Onze-Lieve-Vrouw-Tenhemelopneming en is gebouwd tussen 1454 en 1463. De Peperbus is 75 meter hoog en heeft met zijn 51 klokken een van de grootste carillons van Nederland. De naam dankt de toren aan de vorm – deze lijkt op een peperbus. Lange tijd geldt de Peperbus als hoogste toren van de stad. Dat verandert met de bouw van de IJsseltoren die circa 96 meter hoog is.

Peperbus

The Peperbus at the city’s heart can safely be said to be one of the icons of Zwolle. The tower is part of Our Lady Basilica and was built between 1454 and 1463. The Peperbus is 75 metres high and has one of the largest carillons in the Netherlands with 51 bells. The tower’s nickname can be attributed to its shape – it resembles a pepper pot. For a long time, the Peperbus was the tallest tower in the city. That changed when the IJssel Tower was constructed: that is about 96 metres in height.

Reizen en verplaatsen

De wegen en het spoor zijn de aderen van Zwolle. Wie van A naar B reist, heeft daarvoor vele mogelijkheden. Ook omdat de stad als schakel fungeert tussen het westen, het zuiden en het noorden van Nederland. Die wegen en het spoor zijn bovendien met elkaar verbonden door bruggen die als ware kunstwerken de stad sieren. Vooral de laatste decennia is de stad hierin gegroeid. En dat Zwolle een echte fietsstad is, blijkt in 2021. Dan wordt de stad uitgeroepen tot Beste Fietsstad ter Wereld.

Travel and transport

Zwolle’s roads and railways are its arteries. This creates a wealth of possibilities, no matter where you are travelling to or from. This is also because the city has as linking position between the west, south and north of the Netherlands.

Those roads and the railways are also interconnected by bridges that decorate the city like genuine works of art. In recent decades in particular, this aspect of the city has developed. And 2021 showed that Zwolle is genuinely a city for cyclists: it was voted the Best Cycling City in the World.

Station Zwolle

Station Zwolle is een treffend voorbeeld van de neoclassicistische bouwstijl. Het gebouw werd in 1868 in gebruik genomen, is 60 meter lang en heeft een indrukwekkende gietijzeren perronkap dat vervaardigd is door de Zwolse firma Wispelwey. Nu is Station Zwolle hét treinknooppunt van Oost-Nederland. Dagelijks passeren 40.000 treinreizigers het knooppunt. Per half uur komen acht treinen uit alle windrichtingen aan op het station. Overigens is de laatste jaren niet alleen het gebied rondom het station vernieuwd, zoals het Stationsplein, ook is er een nieuwe reizigerstunnel aangelegd en een nieuw busstation.

Zwolle Station

Zwolle Station is a prime example of the neoclassical building style. The building came into use in 1868; it is 60 metres long and has an impressive cast iron platform roof that was made by the Zwolle company Wispelwey. Today, Zwolle Station is the railway junction of the eastern Netherlands. Every day, 40,000 rail passengers pass through the junction. Eight trains from every point of the compass arrive at the station every half hour. Moreover, recent years have seen not just the area around the station being renovated, such as Station Square, but also a new passenger tunnel and bus station being built.

Johan Rudolph Thorbecke

Voor treinreizigers is het niet te missen, het beeld van Johan Rudolph Thorbecke dat prominent geplaatst is op het Stationsplein. Thorbecke (1798-1872), geboren in Zwolle aan wat nu de Thorbeckegracht heet, wordt gezien als een van de belangrijkste politici die Nederland heeft gehad. Hij is in 1848 de grondlegger van de nieuwe Nederlandse parlementaire democratie. Zijn ideeën zijn bijna volledig in de nieuwe Grondwet opgenomen. Het bijna twee meter hoge bronzen beeld is gemaakt door kunstenaar Hans Bayens.

Johan Rudolph Thorbecke

The statue of Johan Rudolph Thorbecke that is prominently displayed on Station Square is hard for any rail passenger to miss. Thorbecke (1798-1872), born in Zwolle on the street now known as Thorbeckegracht, is considered one of the most important politicians that the Netherlands has ever had. He was the founding father of the new Dutch parliamentary democracy in 1848 – almost all his ideas were included in the new constitution. The bronze statue, which is almost two metres tall, was made by the artist Hans Bayens.

Schuttebusbrug

Eén van de meest elegante bruggen die Zwolle heeft, is de Schuttebusbrug. De brug verbindt de westzijde van Station Zwolle met de busbaan op de Willemskade.

Dagelijks maken zo’n 1.200 bussen gebruik van de brug die in 2020 de Nationale Staalprijs kreeg in de categorie Infrastructuur. Hij is bijna 250 meter lang en werd 9 februari 2020 samen met het nieuwe busstation geopend. De naam dankt de bus aan de stadsbusdienst Schutte Tours, die tot 1982 actief was. Het zal de toerist en de gemiddelde jonge Zwollenaar niets zeggen, maar de oudere Zwollenaren weten precies wat bedoeld wordt met: De busse van Skutte en loop’n det dutte

Schuttebus Bridge

One of the most elegant bridges in Zwolle is the Schuttebus Bridge. It connects the west side of Zwolle Station to the bus lane at Willemskade.

Every day, around 1,200 buses use the bridge, which won the National Steel Award in 2020 in the Infrastructure category. It is almost 250 metres long and was opened together with the new bus station on 9 February 2020. The bridge got its name from the Schutte Tours city bus service, which operated until 1982. That name probably means nothing to tourists or most younger Zwolle residents, but older natives know exactly what it means: De busse van Skutte en loop’n det dutte (“You can be sure of Schutte’s buses”, or words to that effect).

Van PEC Zwolle tot de Zwolsche Roei- en Zeilvereeniging, van driesterrenrestaurant De Librije tot Doepark Nooterhof – in Zwolle gaan vrije tijd en sport hand-in-hand. De vele sportverenigingen en rijke horeca maken de stad niet alleen een fijne plek om te verblijven, maar dragen ook bij aan gezondheid en ontspanning. En niet in de laatste plaats door de rijke geschiedenis van de stad.

From the football club PEC Zwolle to the Zwolsche

Roei- en Zeilvereeniging (Zwolle Rowing and Sailing Association), from three-Michelin-star restaurant De Librije to Doepark Nooterhof, leisure and sports go hand-in-hand in Zwolle. The many sports clubs and richness of the hospitality sector not only make the city a nice place to stay but also promote health and relaxation. And that is very much thanks to the city’s rich history.

Stadion PEC Zwolle

Het stadion van de betaaldvoetbalclub PEC Zwolle is relatief jong. Geopend in 2009 draagt het nu de naam MAC3PARK Stadion, voorheen droeg het de naam IJsseldelta Stadion.

Het stadion heeft een capaciteit van 14.000 toeschouwers en heeft vier tribunes die de namen dragen van belangrijke personen uit de clubhistorie: de Henk Timmer-tribune (naar de

voormalige keeper van de club), Fred Patrick-tribune (naar de speler van PEC die in 1989 omkwam bij de vliegtuigramp met SLM in Suriname), Marten Eibrink-tribune (oud-voorzitter) en Klaas Drost-tribune (voormalig sterspeler).

Naast PEC Zwolle is het stadion ook in gebruik als hotel en zijn er meerder winkels en kantoren in gevestigd.

PEC Zwolle Stadium

The stadium of the professional football club PEC Zwolle is relatively new. Opened in 2009, it now bears the name MAC3PARK Stadium. Previously it was called the IJsseldelta Stadium. Bekerwinst PEC Zwolle

Het mag gerust een van de hoogtepunten genoemd worden van Zwolle in het algemeen en PEC Zwolle in het bijzonder. De 5-1 bekerwinst op Ajax, in de finale, in april 2014. PEC Zwolle won daarmee zijn eerste KNVBbeker in de historie.

PEC Zwolle is ontstaan in 1910. Aartsrivaal is Go Ahead Eagles uit Deventer – het treffen tussen beide clubs staat bekend als de IJsselderby.

Winning the cup final PEC Zwolle

It can safely be remembered as one of the highlights for Zwolle in general and for PEC Zwolle in particular: winning the cup final 5-1 against Ajax in April 2014. This won PEC Zwolle its first ever KNVB (Royal Dutch Football Association) cup.

PEC Zwolle was founded in 1910. Its arch-rival is Go Ahead Eagles from Deventer; matches between the two clubs are known as the ‘IJssel derby’.

Sportpark Het Hoge Laar

Sportpark Het Hoge Laar aan de Luttekeweg in Zwolle herbergt meerdere sportverenigingen, waaronder enkele voetbalclubs, een handbalvereniging en hockeyclub HC Zwolle.

Opvallend onderdeel zijn de blauwe velden en tribune van laatstgenoemde. In 2017 werd deze accommodatie van de hockeyers in gebruik genomen. Met 1.600 leden en 115 teams is HC Zwolle een van de grootste verenigingen van Zwolle. De club is ontstaan uit de fusie van ZMHC en Tempo’41.

Sports park Het Hoge Laar

The sports park Het Hoge Laar on Luttekeweg in Zwolle accommodates numerous sports clubs, including several football clubs, a handball club and the HC Zwolle hockey club.

Striking features of the last of these are the blue pitches and stand. This accommodation for the hockey players came into service in 2017. HC Zwolle has 1,600 members and 115 teams, making it one of the biggest sports clubs in Zwolle. The club arose from the merger of ZMHC and Tempo’41.

Openluchtbad

In 1989 dreigde nog de sloopkogel, nu is Openluchtbad Zwolle een bloeiende vereniging met circa 6.000 tot 8.000 vrijwilligers. Het openluchtbad stamt uit 1933 en is een rijksmonument. Het telt twee 50 meterbaden, twee 30 meterbaden en twee peuterbaden. De sloop is voorkomen door grote weerstand onder de Zwollenaren – in 1992 neemt Vereniging Openluchtbad Zwolle het bad over van de gemeente die het eerder wilde slopen. Jaarlijks bezoeken zo’n 80.000 waterliefhebbers het bad.

Open-air swimming pool

It was threatened with demolition in 1989, but the Openluchtbad Zwolle (Zwolle Open-Air Swimming Pool) is now a flourishing club with around 6,000 to 8,000 volunteers.

The open-air swimming pool dates from 1933 and is listed as a national heritage item. It has two 50-metre pools, two 30-metre pools and two toddlers’ pools. The demolition was prevented by a lot of resistance among the people of Zwolle and in 1992, Vereniging Openluchtbad Zwolle (the Zwolle Open-Air Swimming Pool Association) acquired the pool from the municipality that previously wanted to demolish it. Every year, around 80,000 water lovers visit the pool.
