egon het met het olieverfdoosje dat Tjalf Sparnaay als jongen van twaalf kreeg? Was het standaardwerk Photorealism van Louis K. Meisel de opmaat tot zijn kunstenaarschap?

Of was dat misschien het eerste geschilderde ei dat hij ophing in zijn eigen galerie en dat sindsdien onlosmakelijk met hem is verbonden? Inmiddels is het 2024 en viert Sparnaay – naast zijn zeventigste verjaardag – zijn veertigjarig jubileum als beeldend kunstenaar met de overzichtstentoonstelling Tjalf Sparnaay – The Bigger Picture. Vijf jaar geleden, in 2019, werkten we ook al samen. Museum JAN toonde toen Delicious Paintings, een expositie van Sparnaays food paintings waar een groot en razend enthousiast publiek op afkwam. Bezoekers waren gefascineerd door zijn megarealistische weergaven van etenswaren. Dat dit naar meer smaakte, blijkt wel uit onze nieuwste tentoonstelling.

In The Bigger Picture laat Sparnaays werk bij uitstek zien dat de vertaling van picture zowel ‘schilderij’ als ‘foto’ betekent. Ruim vijftig voorstellingen uit ver­schillende collecties geven een bijzondere dwarsdoorsnede van zijn oeuvre. Enkele oude bekenden, maar eveneens een aantal onbekende werken en zelfs nieuwe pareltjes. Sparnaay brengt ons via zijn meest recente doek WasteScape terug in de tijd en neemt ons mee op een persoonlijke trip down memory lane. De expositie is een rondgang langs zijn vroegste imaginaire landschappen met klassieke gebouwen in de stijl van magisch realist Carel Willink, zijn typische Amsterdam-tafereeltjes met tram en fiets, zijn illustraties voor ansichtkaarten, zijn werken in de minutieuze stijl van het Amerikaanse fotorealisme en natuurlijk zijn hyperrealistische stillevens van alledaagse onderwerpen. Vanzelfsprekend mogen op dit feest Sparnaays iconische en wereldberoemde gebakken eieren en platgetrapte colablikjes niet ont­breken. Ook ontmoeten we recent werk: geëngageerde voorstellingen die reageren op de hedendaagse con­sumptiemaatschappij en beeldcultuur. WasteScape is Sparnaays nieuwste schilderij dat hij speciaal

voor de tentoonstelling in Museum JAN maakte.

De compositie van een doorsnee afvalzak met doodgewoon vuilnis wordt voor het eerst aan het publiek getoond – de verf is nog nauwelijks droog – en vormt een absoluut hoogtepunt binnen de tentoonstelling.

Voor deze begeleidende monografie schreef Simon McKeown, hoofd Kunstgeschiedenis aan het Marlbo­ rough College in Marlborough (Verenigd Koninkrijk), het essay Tjalf Sparnaay: een hyperrealist in de Haarlemse traditie, waarin hij Sparnaays creaties op originele wijze verbindt aan de Amerikaanse popart en het fotorealisme van de jaren zestig en zeventig, maar eveneens aan de zeventiende-eeuwse meesters van het stilleven uit Haarlem, niet toevallig de stad waar Sparnaay is geboren. In de biografie van de hand van kunsthistoricus, curator en auteur Karin van Lieverloo rangschikt zij enkele belangrijke sleutel­momenten uit Sparnaays artistieke loopbaan.

Niet eerder vertelde hij zo uitvoerig over zijn weg naar de kunsten en deelde hij zo openhartig zijn gedachten over zijn werk, door Van Lieverloo opgetekend in haar essay Schilderijen van Sparnaay – Voedsel voor de geest. Deze teksten doen recht aan het lange pad dat Sparnaay is gegaan en geven de lezer – maar ook hemzelf, zo bekende hij – inzicht in wie hij is als kunstenaar.

Tjalf Sparnaay feliciteer ik van harte met zijn bijzondere jubileum en ik zeg hem dank voor onze bijzondere samenwerking. Daarnaast wil ik mijn buitengewone erkentelijkheid uitspreken aan alle bruikleengevers die hun ‘Sparnaays’ hebben afgestaan voor de duur van de tentoonstelling. Simon McKeown en Karin van Lieverloo dank ik voor hun inspirerende teksten, Waanders Uitgevers voor de productie van deze omvangrijke monografie en Studio Berry Slok voor de prachtige vormgeving van zowel boek als tentoonstelling. id it all start with the box of oil paints that Tjalf Sparnaay received as a boy of twelve?

Was Louis K. Meisel’s authoritative book on Photorealism the prelude to his artistry? Or could it have been the first painted egg that he hung in his own art gallery, which has been inextricably linked to him ever since? Now it’s 2024 and Sparnaay is not only celebrating his 70th birthday, but also his 40th anniversary as a visual artist, marked by the retrospective exhibition Tjalf Sparnaay – The Bigger Picture. Five years ago, in 2019, we also had a professional collaboration. Museum JAN housed Delicious Paintings, an exhibition of Sparnaay’s food-themed art that drew large crowds and rave reviews. Visitors were fascinated by his megarealistic renderings of food. The public developed a taste for his work, as is evident from our latest exhibition.

In The Bigger Picture, Sparnaay’s work is a perfect example of why picture can refer to both paintings and photographs. Over fifty pieces on loan from various collections present an exceptional crosssection of his oeuvre. It features several old favorites, but also a number of unknown pieces and a few fresh wonders. Through his most recent canvas entitled WasteScape, Sparnaay takes us back in time, guiding us on a personal trip down memory lane. The exhibition is a tour of his earliest imaginary landscapes featuring classical buildings in the style of magic realist Carel Willink, his characteristic Amsterdam cityscapes with trams and bicycles, his illustrations for postcards, his works painted in the meticulous style of American photorealism and, of course, his hyperrealistic still lifes of everyday subjects. It goes without saying that Sparnaay’s iconic, world-renowned fried eggs and flattened cans of cola will be attending this celebration. We will also encounter more recent works: socially engaged pieces in dialogue with contemporary consumer society and visual culture. WasteScape is Sparnaay’s latest painting, which he created especially for the exhibition at Museum JAN. Displayed to the public

for the first time here – the paint barely dry – the composition of an average garbage bag filled with ordinary household rubbish is an absolute highlight of the exhibition.

For this accompanying monograph, Simon McKeown, head of Art History at Marlborough College in the United Kingdom, wrote the essay Tjalf Sparnaay: a hyperrealist in the Haarlem tradition, in which he uses an original approach to connect Sparnaay’s creations to American pop art and the photorealism of the 1960s and 1970s, as well as to the seventeenthcentury masters of still life from Haarlem – not coincidentally the city where Sparnaay was born. Art historian, curator and author Karin van Lieverloo provided a biography focusing on several key moments in Sparnaay’s artistic career. Never before has the artist so extensively discussed his path to the arts, or so candidly shared his thoughts on his work, as chronicled by Van Lieverloo in her essay Paintings by Sparnaay – Food for the Soul. These texts do justice to the long and winding road that Sparnaay has taken, giving readers – and he himself, as he confessed – more insight into who he is as an artist.
