MESSAGE FROM THE CHAIRMAN ESTHER FRENKIEL

As we continue with our 2010 campaign, we are delighted to report that this year’s United Israel Appeal Victorian Campaign opening events attracted almost 2500 guests. This outstanding support for Israel is most encouraging and augurs well for our current fundraising efforts. On behalf of everyone at UIA Victoria, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a Yom Ha’atzmaut Sameach. We join with Am Israel in hoping for lasting peace in Israel, and remember, now more than ever, “Israel still needs you.”

ESTHER FRENKIEL CHAIRMAN UIA VICTORIA APRIL 2010

MESSAGE FROM THE WORLD CHAIRMAN OF KEREN HAYESOD AMB. AVI PAZNER

Dear Friends, It is a pleasure for me to greet you all in Victoria as Israel celebrates 62 years of independence. This year is a landmark year as we celebrate 90 years since the birth of United Israel Appeal, which was launched under the name Keren Hayesod (The Foundation Fund). The founders of KH-UIA could never have dreamed of Israel as it is today or the achievements of the organizations they initiated. But their faith in world Jewry as the key to creating and assisting a future Jewish homeland was beyond all doubt justified. You today are their living success story. Many of the State of Israel’s achievements are also our achievements, accomplished through the insightful vision of our donors. On a personal note, I would like to say that I feel privileged to have served as World Chairman of KH – UIA over the past twelve years. During this time, I have had the opportunity to witness the outstanding work of UIA Victoria first hand. As you are aware, your work has borne fruit all over Israel, touching the lives of many people you will never meet and who will never know you personally. So my friends, Yeshar Koach! I wish all of you, together with the State of Israel, ‫ יום העצמאות שמח‬Happy 62nd Independence Day. May you go from strength to strength.

EXCERPTS FROM HER AUSTRALIAN DIARY

“I think I may have died and gone to heaven. I am in Australia as the guest of the United Israel Appeal, to talk to Australian Jews about what can only be described as Britain’s derangement on the subject of Israel and, by extension, America and the war to defend the free world. In Britain, supporting Israel has become an activity to be undertaken only by consenting adults in private. Zionism is now the liberation movement that dare not speak its name. But in Australia, I meet people who not only see nothing untoward about the UIA and even openly support Israel. The Australian Jews strike me as a robust and confident community. This is surely because they have nothing to fear from their fellow Aussies, who are on the same page. Australians don’t have Britain’s thousand-year history of — how to put it — profound cultural ambivalence towards the Jews. Australia also still has a strong sense of itself as a nation (although this is now under assault, as in Britain, from the intelligentsia). Self-confident nations tend not to turn upon their Jews. Britain’s national identity is unravelling; one symptom is the current net emigration of indigenous Brits. The Australian Jewish audiences I speak to, many of them Holocaust survivors or their children, are aghast to hear about both the virulence of British anti-Israel bigotry and the way in which the establishment is sucking up to Islamic extremists — or as our government tells us to call them, ‘anti-Islamic’ extremists. I warn them, however, to treat me with circumspection since I am known to be an extremist Zionist insane warmongering Islamophobe. They cheer.” “I am reminded that when I last spoke in Australia a few years ago, I shocked one Blair admirer when I observed that the former PM’s support for the Iraq war was actually out of character as the one good thing he did in a governmental record of general nihilistic radicalism. The name of the individual whom I thus so cruelly disabused was Tony Abbott.” “I am mesmerised by Tony Abbott. A conservative politician who actually articulates conservative values! A political leader who actually leads! Such a phenomenon is unknown in Britain, where David Cameron’s Conservatives believe they have to go with the left-wing flow. And of all issues, Abbott actually won his party leadership through scorning man-made global warming theory for the scam that it is. This is surely as if Galileo had been elected to the Papacy. Abbott thus took on and bested not only Prime Minister Rudd but his own Liberal party colleagues who had supported Rudd’s ruinous environmental policies. And wonder of wonders, such realism is winning votes; people queue up to say to me: ‘At last, a politician who tells it as it is.’ As a result, Abbott is snapping at Rudd’s heels. A politician who is not afraid to tell unfashionable truths to ideological power; a conservative who is fighting on the right side of the culture wars.”

As I empty my desk drawers and write my farewell emails, I reflect on eight years of professional service at the United Israel Appeal of Victoria. Before I arrived in this organisation, I could never have imagined the dedication to the State of Israel and to the concept of Zionism that permeates this community. The willingness of our volunteers to persevere with canvassing activities, with door-knocking on winter evenings, with asking for money despite the difficulties, and the continuing generosity of our valued donors has amazed and inspired me. This continuing work is crucial to the Jewish State’s welfare and the continuation of programs which support immigrants, and the disadvantaged members of its society. The funds which our generous community directs to the Jewish Agency become ever more important as the Agency’s budget is slashed because of economic pressures and the reduction of income from North American communities. Our campaign message in 2010 remains: Israel Still Needs You. I am grateful that you our supporters have risen to this challenge, and I am confident you will continue to do so. I wish all of you a Yom Ha’atzmaut sameach, and I thank you for your support to me and our cause over the past years.

WOMEN’S DIVISION OPENING BREAKFAST

YOUTH FUTURES

“What does Israel mean to you?” was the theme of the 2010 Women’s Division breakfast which was held on 4th March at the International of Brighton with over 350 women attending. The morning began with an inspiring video produced by Melanie Smorgon and the Women’s Division committee which featured the women of the community’s thoughts and feelings about the State of Israel. The first guest speaker was Mirla Gal, who shared with the audience the

THIS YEAR OVER 7000 CHILDREN THROUGHOUT ISRAEL WILL HAVE A CHANCE FOR A BRIGHTER FUTURE THANKS TO YOUR SUPPORT OF YOUTH FUTURES. By focusing individual attention on thousands of marginalized children nationwide, Youth Futures succeeds in breaking through the seemingly impenetrable social and psychological obstacles that stand between acutely disadvantaged children and the opportunity for a bright fulfilling future. Youth Futures’ young post-army aged “trustees” (counsellors) are trained to identify the individual strengths and aptitudes of every child in their care and utilize existing community resources to their advantage. Noga Landau, a Youth Futures trustee says, “I discovered a wonderful, sociable girl who yearned for a connection to support and encouragement.” Aliza, the daughter of a single mother who made aliyah from the FSU, suffered from neglect. Through group activities and individual care, Noga has turned Aliza’s life in a new direction. Aliza has been given the opportunity to join afterschool jewelry-making and dance classes in which she excels. Today, her behavioral problems are disappearing and her school performance has begun to reflect her true talent and intelligence.

experience of being in government and in the security service and the challenges she faced during those years. The morning’s second speaker was Hila Amos, the Director of the Youth Futures Program in Kiryat Gat, a program supported by the Women’s Division. She presented on her work with disadvantaged youngsters and spoke of how the money raised helps youth at risk. The event was a wonderful confirmation of the strength and unity amongst the women of the Melbourne Jewish community.

2009 - 2010 KEY WORKERS MISSION TO ISRAEL The annual Key Workers Mission is an 11 night/12 day Israel program. For many first time travellers or those who haven’t been in Israel for a long period of time, the Mission introduces people to the State of Israel, its history, the current economic, social and political situations and most importantly the work of Keren HayesodUIA. Furthemore, participating children are provided with the foundations of Ahavat Israel (love of Israel) and a stepping stone for their later and further engagement with the Jewish State. The Key Workers Mission over the last 7 years has become an important element in strengthening the special relationship between UIA Victoria, the Melbourne Jewish Community and the State of Israel. Participants this year varied in ages which made for an entertaining, energetic and enriching mission experience. 01

Participants in the 2009-2010 Key Workers Mission to Israel gathered at the home of Shlomo and Shyrla Werdiger on Sunday 21st February for a re-union brunch. Sydney participants made a particular effort to fly down for the day for this special occasion to meet with friends again.

A S PA R T O F T H E 2 0 1 0 C A M PA I G N , UNITED ISRAEL APPEAL HOSTED A NUMBER OF SPECIAL INTERNATIONAL GUESTS WHO HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO VISIT THE JEWISH DAY SCHOOLS AND ENGAGE WITH THE STUDENTS.

Students in grades 3-6 at Leibler Yavneh College were mesmerized by Karen Kellerman, Director of Nitzana Educational Youth Village located in the Negev. Karen discussed the various environmentally friendly programs that Nitzana adopts and the different kinds of produce exported from there. The students were impressed by her PowerPoint presentation which showed the solar energy park that has recently been built.

The morning was a great opportunity for everyone to reflect on their wonderful times in Israel and share their experiences. Family participants were presented with a Diary and DVD of photos from the Mission.

The Daniel Zamir Jazz Quartet performed at Mount Scopus Memorial College, Bialik College and Yeshivah College. As part of the high school Rosh Choidesh assembly at Yeshivah College, the group performed for the students in the Werdiger Hall. Each band member was presented with a Haggada in appreciation of their visit and performance.

WORKING TOGETHER OUR PARTNERSHIP IN ACTION It wasn’t the first time. Or the second, or even the third, but this visit to the Arava was special, says Tamara Bruce, one of the founding members of the AravaAustralia Partnership (AAP) activist group in Melbourne who put the principles of our Partnership into action when she joined local volunteers in the evaluation and prioritization of projects to be operated by the Partnership in 2010. The visit was intense, and Tamara didn’t waste a moment. Within minutes of arriving in the Arava she was on her way to the most important meeting of the year for the ACE (Art, Community and Education) subcommittee to discuss the proposed projects for funding by the 2010 Partnership. At the end of the four-hour meeting, after parting from her Israeli colleagues, Tamara carried on to meetings with Partnership Director Cochy Avny, Regional Council Head Ezra Ravins and the staff of the Limmud Arava project. As one of the initiators of the Limmud Arava project, this meeting was p a r t i c u l a r l y c l o s e t o Ta m a r a ’ s h e a r t , a n d s h e w a s e x t re m e l y i m p r e s s e d b y the clarity of purpose and energy of the Limmud staff. At the end of this very l o n g d a y Ta m a r a h a d d i n n e r a t t h e home of local activist and old friend Celia Yitzhak. The next morning began early with a meeting with Celia on art in the community; Celia and Tamara were among the first supporters of the idea to take advantage of the abundance of local talent to brand the Arava as a region associated with the arts. From there it was on to a meeting with Partnership Co-chair Peter Rabin, reciprocal relations subcommittee head E v e l y n B i t o n a n d C o c h y Av n y f o r a discussion on the future of the Partnership, and the visit ended with a tour of the recently founded Leadership Academy on Moshav Hazeva. Tamara retur ned to Melbour ne with a clearer picture of the aims and goals of the projects that the Partnership will o p e r at e i n 2 0 10 , w h i c h s h e w i l l s h a re with her Australian colleagues. Her visit was invaluable to us all - this is what our Partnership is all about!

SOME OF TAMARA’S IMPRESSIONS “My recent visit to the Arava was incredibly brief, intense and inspirational. I really felt the winds of empowerment in all my meetings. The Community Education plan makes so much sense; it is taking advantage of being a s m a l l c o m m u n i t y t o attend t o t h e individual educational needs of children from Pre School to bagrut. The Art exhibition and the enthusiasm of the local artists led by Celia Yitzhak is very exciting. I think it is the beginning of a grass roots or bottom up process to brand the Arava with Art and get things happening. T h e L i m m u d c o m m i t t e e a re d o i n g a superb job. I was so impressed during my visit to the Mechina (Leadership Academy) program; it is indeed a way in which the values of the Arava way of life can impact on the greater Israeli population.”
