SAVE THE DATE

The function attracted an overwhelming response with more than 200 Melbourne women gathering at the Beth Weizmann Centre to hear Naomi give an inspirational address.

Naomi Ragen spoke about being an Orthodox American Jewish author living in Jerusalem, having had much success and opening the door to Jewish readership for Orthodox Jewish female writers. Ragen claims that her stories and characters choose her rather than her choosing them. Life in Israel as an orthodox Jewish woman, and the events affecting her community, have played a large role in informing each of her narratives. This is what underpins her best selling novels.

A delicious morning tea was served, and this together with Naomi Ragen’s address left the audience feeling uplifted and better informed.

young UIA

yachad

ON THURSDAY 17 JULY 2008 OVER 40 PEOPLE ATTENDED A YUIA BOARDROOM LUNCH WHICH WAS HELD AT BELL POTTER SECURITIES IN THE MELBOURNE CBD.

UIA VICTORIA HAS FORMED A NEW AND EXCITING GROUP – YACHAD, WHICH IS BEING CO-CHAIRED BY MARK KESSEL AND SHELLEY FREEMAN.

1

Guest Speaker Mr. Julian Segal, the CEO of Incitec Pivot discussed the influence that economic growth is having in emerging economies. Mr Segal delivered an excellent address and this speaker follows recent guests Allan Moss and Paul Little. These events are cementing the growing reputation of Young UIA for delivering some of the best informative business lunches in Melbourne.

According to Mark Kessel, “there is a gap in the market place for a group to represent young professionals.” Therefore, Yachad is a group between young UIA and main appeal. The group raises funds for refugee relief projects in Israel such as the Ben Yakir Youth Village, which aids high risk youth by providing them with food, shelter and education programs. On Thursday 10 July 2008 an inaugural luncheon delivered a huge response at the Boardoom of Minter Ellison Lawyers in Melbourne’s CBD. The Guest Speaker, John Lenders, Victorian Treasurer and Leader of the Government in the Legislative Council, was very well received.

2

In his address, the Minister highlighted the importance of continuing to work together to strengthen the relationship between the State of Israel and Victoria. In doing so; we will foster a better understanding of each others’ needs and overcome future challenges in the areas of environment, research and development and education. In Hebrew the word YACHAD translates as “togetherness”. This refers to the group’s determination to unite in supporting Israel.

Ben Yakir Youth Aliyah Village — Transforming the lives of Israel’s youth at risk

SOME FACTS TO CONSIDER • 68,000 Israeli youth are being raised to some extent outside their biological homes • 10,000 of these youth have been removed from their homes because they are in imminent danger

— ONE OF THE PROJECTS THAT THE UNITED ISRAEL APPEAL VICTORIA (UIA) SUPPORTS IS THE JEWISH AGENCY’S YOUTH ALIYAH VILLAGE, BEN YAKIR LOCATED IN HASHARON AREA. Ben Yakir, a traditionally observant village, acts as a safe haven for disadvantaged youth who have come from difficult socioeconomic backgrounds and broken homes. Ben Yakir houses approximately 150 boys aged between 12-17, of whom half are immigrants from Ethiopia and the other half comprises immigrants from the former Soviet Union and Israeli born youth from deprived backgrounds. By providing residential care and remedial education to these youth, it is hoped they will break out of the poverty cycle, learn self confidence and have a brighter future.

To further develop their self confidence, the youth participate in a variety of extracurricular activities such as karate, sports, music and arts. Through this, it is envisaged that these youth will be able to lead a normal life and secure a productive future. The individual attention and loving care that these youth receive from the counsellors and housemothers (who act as surrogate parents) helps restore their feelings of belonging.

With this renewed and meaningful life, these youth have been able to graduate from high school and serve in the IDF which Many of these youth enter the village with low is symbolic of their journey from hardship self esteem and a lack of self confidence. This to becoming valuable and contributing problematic behaviour manifests itself through members of Israeli society. illiteracy and learning disorders. Therefore, the remedial education program aims to develop basic skills, strengthen overall cognitive abilities and essentially gives them their last chance to complete high school or enlist in the Israeli Defence Force (IDF). Remarkably, last year all students who participated graduated and enlisted in the army- a result which is truly commendable.

Eli*

arrived at the Ben Yakir Youth Village soon after he made aliyah from the Ukraine 7 years ago. He settled well and finally found a place he could call home. Eli had been removed from a dysfunctional home environment. The staff at Ben Yakir took Eli to Poland for the March of the Living and made the arrangements for his Barmitzvah. Two years ago, the workers helped Eli to achieve recruitment into the armoured corps of the IDF. They were delighted to learn that two months ago Eli was recognised as the best soldier in the brigade during his operational activities in the Ramalah area. After completing his service, he is considering working in the village to assist other youths in need. The staff are so pleased with Eli’s progress and how much he has achieved. * The name has been changed to protect the identity of the child.

Eva Fried —

UIA connects Eva Fried with her past

— You never know what sort of a surprise you can have on a UIA mission. This certainly rings true for Eva Fried, a participant in Jack Smorgon’s Major Donors’ mission this year. Before a beautifully planned reception providing lavish food and entertainment, the participants attended a special photography exhibition at the Eretz Israel Museum in Tel-Aviv. The exhibition, curated by Zoltan Kluger, featured a collection of photographs from 1933 -1958 which focused on the Jewish community in Palestine and Israel. During the exhibitor’s explanation of the various pieces, Eva Fried noticed an image of herself as a baby in the arms of her mother, who had come from Cyprus to a refugee camp in Israel in 1947. In order to confirm whether it was in fact she and her mother, she consulted her husband, Tab, who was convinced that it was his motherin-law in the photograph. Keren Hayesod was able to track down the original and sent a copy to Eva. Indeed this is another demonstration of the connection between the Melbourne community, UIA and the State of Israel.

missions

FROM 17 – 29 APRIL 2008, 42 MEMBERS OF UIA VICTORIA AND NEW SOUTH WALES PARTICIPATED IN THE UIA GOLDEN MISSION TO ISRAEL.

UIA MISSIONS ARE A TRULY MEANINGFUL AND MEMORABLE EXPERIENCE FOR ALL PARTICIPANTS.

The group celebrated Israel’s 60th Anniversary and visited many interesting Israel sites. They were able to see some of the projects that UIA sponsor such as Nitzana Youth Village, the Science Park and prominent Israeli high-tech companies. A wonderful time was had by all.

Our extensive program led by professional tour guides shows participants through Israel; learning the history, hearing guest speakers and meeting people who created a moment in the history for the State of Israel. The missions allow participants to meet with olim and students in Absorption Centres, and in education programs such as Net@.

REMEMBER ISRAEL AT YOUR NEXT SIMCHA AND CONSIDER A DONATION IN LIEU OF GIFTS.

THE AUSTRALIAN PARTNERSHIP 2000 PROJECT RECENTLY WELCOMED THREE IMPORTANT DELEGATIONS TO AUSTRALIA. PARTNERSHIP 2000 CONTINUES TO STRENGTHEN THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE AUSTRALIAN JEWISH COMMUNITY AND THE PEOPLE OF THE CENTRAL ARAVA REGION.

— – Acknowledgment Certificates – Special Occasion Certificates – Get Well Certificates – Festival Certificates

— In another reciprocal relations activity this year we welcomed a group of Adult Delegates to Melbourne for a week- a follow up to an Arava Australia Partnership visit to Israel 18 months ago. During their stay, they participated in successful strategic planning sessions which reviewed the Partnership and set out goals and plans for future cooperative projects. They also attended several planning and information sessions with local experts in the areas of tourism, arts, aged services and special education.

During a recent 3 week period, the Australian Arava Partnership welcomed two specialist teachers from the Arava’s Shittim School, the annual Shittim School student group of 15 accompanied by a teacher, and a delegation of 8 adult activists who are involved in community building and development in the areas of business, tourism, community, arts and education. 1

Partnership 2000 was established by the Jewish Agency for Israel in the mid 1990s as a strategy to build lasting friendships between Diaspora communities and the residents of regions or cities in Israel. Mutual co-operation combined with the identification of joint projects through person to person interactions contribute to the strengthening of the Jewish people and the strong identification with Israel amongst local community members.

These visits have enhanced the relationships between Jewish people in the State of Israel and Australia and enabled members of our Melbourne Jewish community to help fulfill David Ben Gurion’s vision of making the desert bloom and building strong communities in the Negev desert. 2

3

The first delegation reciprocated 2 similar visits by Melbourne teachers to the Arava in the last two years. Two teachers from the Shittim School spent three weeks on a work placement at Bialik College during July, bringing specialized educational knowledge and experience. The Shittim school delegation spent their first 10 days in Sydney and then were hosted for an additional 10 days by families of Bialik College. Students attended classes at a variety of Jewish Day Schools and took part in education programs. The student delegation together with students from the Jewish day schools participated in a workshop to discuss history, life and the challenges facing Israel and Australia respectively. The group also enjoyed sightseeing in and around Melbourne. For 13 years, this program has been highly successful and has inspired Australian Jews to visit the Arava region when visiting Israel.
