THU

Our Ami communal canvassers have worked incredibly hard in 2008, beginning with their participation in and support for the 2008 Gala Dinner and continuing with face-to-face and phone canvassing. On Mark Blankfield’s retirement as Chair, Jeff Meyer and Nathan Shafir have assumed leadership of the group. Many thanks to our group chairs Jennie Krafchek, Jack Kagan, Herbert Epstein and Des Galgut.

INVITATION

UIA Victoria has achieved an outstanding 2008 campaign result despite the difficult economic climate. At the Annual General Meeting on Thursday 27th November, it was announced that $36.6m was raised in Australia, with approximately 50% of these funds raised in the Victorian campaign. The AGM, which attracted over 250 guests, featured Greg Masel, the Director General of KH Jerusalem, and prominent Middle East commentator and political affairs analyst, Ehud Ya’ari. The King David School Choir and Ari Wenig performed. The evening provided the opportunity for acknowledging the following tireless volunteers whose efforts underpin the campaign’s outstanding results: Sam Blum, Tamara Bruce, Rachel Caplan, Jeremy Davis, Ron Finkel, Leslie Gescheit, Toby Harris, Amy Hershan, Nicky Jacobs, Adam Joel, David Miller, Martin Miller, Peter Rubinstein, Sam Salcman, Ginette Searle, Steven Shochet, George Weinberg and Nathan Zajdband. United Israel Appeal Victoria also launched its new website at the meeting and announced its 2009 theme: “Israel Still Needs You.” 1

B 30

On Wednesday 5th of November, Ami had a planning session attended by Irit Barash, head of the Keren Hayesod English Speaking Countries Department. Plans for the 2009 campaign were discussed and the group will be holding drawing room meetings in addition to its traditional canvassing activities.  1

Over 40 young professionals gathered to hear guest speaker, Mr Robert Richter QC, speak on “The Role of the Diaspora in the Survival of Israel,” which was praised for being both controversial and thought provoking. Moreover, he shared stories of his involvement with those involved in the gangland wars and quite happily highlighted the incorrect facts that were portrayed in the recent series Underbelly.
