With a network of alumni around the world, you can’t go far without spotting another member of the Oiler family. In the past few months, as I traveled for alumni visits/receptions and/or on vacation, I came across Findlay College/The University of Findlay alumni in airports and hotels. Recently, we hosted a reception for our soon-to-be pharmacy graduates as they attended the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Midyear Clinical meeting in Las Vegas. As I was getting on the elevator in my hotel, two couples joined me, and, of course, I was sporting Findlay wear as I usually do when I am traveling. They introduced themselves to me as Findlay alumni, and when I introduced myself as the alumni director, they were equally surprised. I thought it might be fun to turn this into a contest for the 2010 year. If you happen to see me, be sure to introduce yourself, and hopefully, I will have a camera in tow for a picture. I will continue to update my sightings monthly in Archlink, and your name will be entered into a drawing at the end of the year for an Oiler basket filled with goodies from your alma mater. 1. What’s Happening on Campus? According to a previously established timeline, Dr. DeBow Freed will step down in 2010. A national search is in progress, with candidates’ applications being accepted through Jan. 18. The search committee has developed a document to introduce The University of Findlay to prospective candidates. The presidential search profile includes a profile of the institution, an overview of the attributes desired in a new president and agenda items for the new presidency. The University of Findlay’s annual Triage Theatre performance will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 16, in the Egner Center for the Performing Arts. No ticket is necessary. Twentyfour hours prior to the performance, groups of between five and six students will be given a theme. The groups then each write a 10-minute scene, stage and rehearse for the next night’s presentation. During the performance, audience members vote for their favorite play. Triage Theatre is presented each year by Alpha Psi Omega, an honorary theater fraternity. The University will host “Overcoming Adversity” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 19, in the Alumni Memorial Union Multipurpose Room. The event will feature a panel of individuals who will share their stories about overcoming difficult circumstances and challenges. Possible topics may include prison re-entry, drug abuse, homelessness, underrepresented youth and medical complications. The Toledo Symphony Orchestra will perform in concert at The University of Findlay at 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 29, as part of the 2009-10 Concert & Lecture Series, in the Winebrenner Theological Seminary. The performance is one of many events planned during UF’s month-long Convocation 2010: Gaining a Global Perspective, Becoming a Global Citizen. General admission is $25; faculty and staff admission is $15; non-UF student admission is $10; and UF student Dr. Marie Louden-Hanes admission is free. For tickets, call the UF Box Office at 419-434-5335. hosts the UF Concert Series. “An Evening with Sutton Foster” will be held at 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 31, in the Winebrenner Theological Seminary. Foster’s Broadway credits include “Shrek the Musical” as Princess Fiona, “Young Frankenstein” as Inga, “The Drowsy Chaperone” as Janet Van de Graaff and “Little Women” as Jo. Foster has earned four Tony nominations, winning for Best Leading Acress in a Musical in 2002 as Millie Dillmount in “Thoroughly Modern Millie.” Grammy-nominated Broadway conductor Phil Reno will accompany Foster on the piano. He is working on the Broadway revival of “Promises, Promises.” Tickets are $15 for adults, and $10 for students and senior citizens over the age Sutton Foster of 65; call the Box Office at 419-434-5335. The performance is made possible by the Mary Snyder Kirk Musical Guest Artist Chair, Curtain Raisers Society for the Performing Arts, the Convocations Committee and the UF music and theatre programs.
The Mazza Museum will host its Funday Sunday from 1:30 – 3:30 p.m. Feb. 7 in the museum, located inside the Virginia B. Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion on campus. February’s theme is “Mazza Makes Music.” Families may participate in storytelling, crafts and other theme-related activities. There is no cost to attend. UF’s theatre department will present “The Pajama Game” at 8 p.m. Feb. 17-20 and at 2 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 21, in the John and Hester Powell Grimm Theatre, located inside the Frank J. Egner Center for the Performing Arts. “The Pajama Game” is a musical based on the novel “7 ½ Cents” by Richard Bissell, which opened on Broadway in 1954. The story deals with labor troubles in a pajama factory, and a romance blossoms between opposing sides of the labor dispute. Tickets are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens. Call the UF Box Office at 419-434-5335 to reserve your tickets. Nearly 300 students graduated from the University during fall commencement ceremonies Saturday, Dec. 12, during which Daniel J. May, Ph.D., vice president for academic affairs, gave the commencement address. More than 130 graduate degrees and 135 undergraduate degrees were awarded, including approximately 20 bachelor of arts degrees and approximately 115 bachelor of science degrees. 2. Academic Update The University of Findlay’s monthlong convocation begins this month, offering students and others opportunities to discuss worldwide concerns and experience cultures from around the world. The centerpiece of the event will be a Global Summit on Feb. 11, 2010, featuring Roy Armes, CEO of Cooper Tire and Rubber Co., and sessions on the links between the global economy and northwest Ohio, including the impact of the automotive industry downturn, as well as on characteristics of successful global executives and tips on how students can prepare themselves for international business opportunities. In addition, the convocation will include exhibits of international art, world dances and musical performances. A variety of art by UF’s art faculty is on display in the Lea Gallery, located in the Virginia B. Gardner Fine Arts Pavilion, through Friday, Jan. 29. An opening reception will be from 6-8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 15. Contributing artists include Valerie Escobedo, assistant professor of art; Marie Louden-Hanes, Ph.D., dean of undergraduate education; Jeff Salisbury, instructor of art and deputy director of the Mazza Museum; Ed Corle, associate professor of art; Anne Beekman, assistant professor of graphic design, Diane Kontar, Ph.D., assistant professor of art history; and Anita McCandless, adjunct assistant professor of art. In December 2009, the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Region 3 at Rhodes State College donated NxLevel™ materials to the College of Business for use in business research classes taught by S. Chris Ward, Ed.D., associate professor, and Dan Yates, Ph.D., assistant professor. During each semester, students may utilize the materials as reference guides to
completing a business plan for a small business entrepreneur/owner or a non-profit organization in the local area. The University will donate the materials it has been using to the Walter C. Potts Entrepreneur and Training Center in Lima. The center uses its resources to help future minority entrepreneurs. UF began its partnership with the SBDC to help small business owners three years ago and has helped more than 40 local businesses develop business plans. Julie McIntosh, Ed.D., has been appointed the new dean of the College of Education at The University of Findlay, as of Jan. 1. She has been assistant dean since July 2008, and previously was a full-time, tenured associate professor. As dean, McIntosh is responsible for undergraduate teacher education majors and initial licensure as well as graduate programs for working teachers. About 600 students are enrolled in education programs at the University. McIntosh serves as president of the UF Alumni Association Board of Governors and as a member of several alumni committees. She earned her bachelor’s degree in biology and secondary Dr. Julie (Dean) McIneducation from The University of Findlay and both a master’s degree in tosh ’90, dean, College secondary education and a doctor of education degree in leadership studies of Education from BGSU. William E. Ruse, J.D., president emeritus of the Blanchard Valley Health Association, will serve as The University of Findlay’s Dana Chair during 2010. Ruse also served in this position during the 2006-07 academic year. Each year, the University chooses a distinguished executive to serve as the Dana Chair, a position funded by the Dana Corporation. The Dana Chair serves as a mentor for a chosen group of 10 Dana Scholars who work as a group for the year. During spring of their junior year, the student Dana Scholars take a class together, work on group projects and visit many local industries where they interact with top-level executives. The Alumni Association Board of Governors held the traditional graduation brunch for graduates and their families on Saturday, Dec. 12, 2009. Immediately following the brunch was the commencement ceremony. The University of Findlay’s College of Pharmacy and Office of Alumni & Parent Relations hosted a pharmacy reception at the annual American Society of Health-System Pharmacists Midyear Clinical Meeting on Dec. 8, 2009, in Las Vegas, Nev. The event provided a venue for updates of the University from Dr. Donald Stansloski, dean of the College of Pharmacy; Dee Dee Spraw ’01, M ’07, director of alumni and parent relations; and Kendall Richardson ’03, M ’05, director of annual giving. Ashland University. Special activities are planned for former players and their children during halftime of each game. Late-breaking news: Jim Steffen ’94 is scheduled to appear on the Jay Leno Show on Thursday, Jan. 14, as a part of the “Don’t try this at home” segment. Steffen will lift a 100-pound barbell while doing squats on an exercise ball. Last month, Steffen was invited to appear on the show, after he submitted a video of himself performing the feat. On Thursday afternoon he will be taped on the show, which will air Thursday night. Steffen developed the Jim’s Boga and Fun Fitness Program and is the author of “Fun Fitness for Families.” In addition to giving motivational talks around the country as “America’s Fun Fitness Coach,” Steffen has launched a new business in Findlay, Jim’s Hot Dogs, in which two hot dog stands offer lunches in various locations around the city. 4. Alumni Spotlight Juanita Sanchez ’02 Juanita Sanchez has been appointed by Gov. Ted Strickland to serve on the Ohio Board of Education, filling an unexpired term from November 2009 until Dec. 31, 2010. She is the first Latina to serve on the board. “I’m enjoying meeting the people who serve on the board,” Sanchez said. “They have received me with open arms. They’re there to guide me, mentor me.” In addition, Sanchez was the first Hispanic to win election in 1995 to the Fremont Credit Union in Fremont, Ohio, where she makes her home. She has served on its board for the past 14 years. She also is a member of the Minority Achievement Council for the Fremont school district, an advisory committee that is addressing the achievement gap of minority students.

She retired after serving 30 years at Terra Community College. She served as an adviser in admissions, where she particularly enjoyed working with adult and minority students. She went on to become the multicultural coordinator, and then, in her last year she served in the foundation office, helping with fundraising and coordinating events. Along the way she earned an associate’s degree from Terra in 1993 and a bachelor’s degree in business management from Findlay in 2002. After retiring from Terra, she was asked to serve as a paraprofessional bilingual aide for Fremont City Schools. She worked with Hispanic youth for nearly two years, helping them with homework and encouraging them to enroll in college and to apply for scholarships and financial aid. Born in Laredo, Texas, Sanchez has lived most of her life in Fremont. She has been married to her husband, Juan Sr., for 36 years. Her son, Juan Jr., 32, is a journalism graduate of The Ohio State University, works in Columbus and is the father of her grandson, Javier Joaquin. Her older son, Javier, died in 1995 when he was 21 and a student at Terra Community College. Sanchez established the Javier Sanchez Memorial Scholarship at Terra to assist minority students. “Through my active participation, I’m trying to open doors for our Latino community, especially our youth. They need so many positive role models, and hopefully, I’m being one of them,” she said. She encourages Latino youth to become involved by serving others in their community. “Those experiences are priceless,” she said. “Although, on occasion we’re selected to serve via the ‘token concept,’ it’s OK if you’re the token. It’s what you do with it that makes the difference. If that’s the way you get in, that’s fine as long as you’ve made a positive impact.” Expressing her personal philosophy, Sanchez said, “The more you serve, and the more lives you touch, the better our world can be.” Now Sanchez has the opportunity to improve education for all of Ohio’s students. 5. Oiler Sports Junior Tyler Sparks, a forward on the men’s basketball team, was named the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC) South Division Player of the Week on Monday, Jan. 11, for his performances in a pair of victories over Wayne State University (Jan. 7) and
Northwood University (Jan. 9). For the week, Sparks averaged 15.0 points, 10.0 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game. Laura Bardall, a sophomore guard on the womenâ€™s basketball team, was named the GLIAC South Division Player of the Week for the second time this season on Monday, Jan. 11, for her performances in a pair of wins over Wayne State (Jan. 7) and Northwood (Jan. 9). During the week, Bardall averaged 16.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals per Tyler Sparks game. Laura Bardall
The Roughneck wrestling team is ranked 15th in the nation and is being led by senior Justin Shannon and sophomore Michael Lybarger. Shannon ranks fourth nationally in the 174-pound weight class, while Lybarger is sixth in the 157-pound weight class.
Senior defensive back Anthony Fields competed in the 2010 Cactus Bowl, an all-star contest for NCAA Division II standouts on Jan. 8 in Kingsville, Justin Shannon Texas. Fields, who is the first Findlay football player to receive an invitation to the bowl, was tabbed as an All-American in 2009, as well as being named first team all-conference and all-region. He made one pass deflection in the contest as his West squad won 16-0.

6. Alumni Support The University of Findlay has received a $1.9 million bequest from the estate of Emerson and Laura Pelton to endow student scholarships. The Pelton Scholarship Endowment Fund is the largest endowed scholarship fund of the University. The scholarships are for residents of Ohio who have excellent academic credentials and demonstrate financial need.

In 1993, the Peltons established the Pelton Scholarship Endowment Fund with a gift of stock. In 1995, they contributed their 120-acre farm near Bloomdale, Ohio, to The University of Findlay in exchange for a charitable remainder annuity trust, which provided income to them for the rest of their lives and helped supplement their living expenses. Upon their deaths, the remainder of their estate was to go into the endowment fund they had established earlier. â€œWe both feel very comfortable with what we have done, and are quite proud that we will be helping a number of
people be more successful than they would have been otherwise,” the Peltons stated when they established the scholarship endowment in the early 1990s. Natives of Bloomdale, Ohio, Emerson Pelton and Laura Myers grew crops and raised cattle on a farm near Bloomdale after their marriage in 1936. Both had a lifelong love of horses, and they belonged for many years to the Buckeye Horse Club in Findlay.

They operated a cattle ranch for five years in Osage County near Bartlesville, Okla., before returning to farming in Ohio. Emerson also worked at Ohio Producers Livestock in Findlay, where he was in charge of the cattle department. Emerson believed in leaving the land improved and earned county and state agricultural awards, including the Goodyear Award for outstanding achievements in soil conservation and wildlife management. Later, they lived in Findlay, where Laura worked at the Alice Dress and Beauty Shop, a women’s dress shop located downtown. After retiring, they traveled extensively and had a condominium in Bradenton, Fla. They relocated in 1985 to Green Valley, Ariz., where the climate was more beneficial for Laura’s health. They moved to a retirement village in Tucson, Ariz., in 1995. They had been married 62 years when Emerson died Feb. 27, 1999. Laura passed away July 5, 2009. Emerson loved the land. He was a successful farmer and a shrewd businessman. He was a person who was interested in doing things well, according to the Emersons’ niece, Rebecca Babcock of Findlay. He was the type of person who pitched in to do whatever needed to be done. A friend said Emerson was “a man of unwavering standards of integrity.” Laura cooked, sewed clothes and costumes, played the organ for church, was an avid birdwatcher and was an accomplished amateur artist as demonstrated by her paintings and drawings. Laura was a positive, upbeat person who enjoyed life, embraced each day and never complained, according to Charlie Shepard, campaign director and former director of development, who visited her many times in her Arizona home. In conjunction with the 125th Endowed Funds Drive, two new scholarships have been created. The goal of the endowed fund drive is to create 125 new endowed funds for student scholarship, faculty development and program development. Thus far, 83 new funds totaling more than $6.3 million have been created. • The members of the Class of 1959 established the Class of 1959 Scholarship Endowment Fund, commemorating their 50-year reunion. The scholarship is awarded to an education major in his or her sophomore, junior or senior year with a GPA of 3.0 or better. • The Eastern Regional Conference of the Churches of God, General Conference, has established the Lucinda V. Peters Scholarship Endowment Fund in recognition of her bequest to the conference. The scholarship is awarded annually to an undergraduate or graduate student who is a member of a church in the Eastern Regional Conference. The student must attend chuch regularly, have a pastoral recommendation from his or her home church and at least a 3.0 GPA. Return to Top
