ACES SOCCER

The 2000 season was the first for the Purple Aces in 2,500seat Arad McCutchan Stadium, providing UE Soccer with one of the finest facilities in the nation used exclusively for soccer. McCutchan Stadium was built 16 years ago as a football stadium. Its transition to a soccer arena began after the University discontinued football in 1997. A two-year process to transform the field to precise soccer standards resulted in an outstanding playing surface for players and an outstanding viewing area for fans. McCutchan Stadium is located on the north end of the UE campus and includes an enclosed press box, locker rooms, a weight room and offices. Located next to it is the Student Recreation & Fitness Center and Carson Center, where most athletics department offices are located. Evansville has hosted more postseason soccer tournaments than any other school in the Missouri Valley Conference, including 12 NCAA Tournament matches. UE hosted an MVC Soccer Tournament in each of its first four years as a conference member. The combination of great fan support and excellent facilities has made UE a popular site for postseason play. Most recently, the stadium played host to the 2015 MVC Women’s Soccer Tournament. In fact, Evansville’s NCAA Women’s Tournament match at home in 1998 against Northwestern drew more fans than any first-round NCAA match in the nation.

MCKENDREE

#AcesAces

Head Coach Ninth Season Evansville, ‘02 Krista McKendree enters her ninth year as head coach of the women’s soccer program in 2016, already building an impressive resume, including a pair of Missouri Valley Conference Coaching Staff of the Year awards, two conference tournament titles, a regular season crown, and a pair of NCAA tournament berths. The only All-American in UE women’s soccer history, McKendree served as an assistant coach at her alma mater from 2005 through 2007, then took over as head coach in 2008. That 2008 team won the Missouri Valley Conference regular season championship, the State Farm MVC Tournament championship, and earned Evansville’s fourth NCAA Tournament berth. To cap it off, McKendree received the 2008 MVC Coaching Staff of the Year award, shared with assistants Matt Kagan and Corey Southers. Never before had a first-year coach at the University of Evansville in any sport led his or her team to an NCAA Division I Tournament. Last season, the Aces bounced back from a slow start to win three of their last four regular season games before riding a strong defensive effort to an MVC tournament crown. UE did not allow a goal over the 200 minutes, as MVC Tournament Most Outstanding Player Whitney Biggs helped the team punch their ticket to the NCAA tournamment. In 2014, UE advanced to the MVC Championship match, falling just shy of advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The Purple Aces ended the year 11-6-3 overall, including a 3-2-1 mark in conference play. The team posted nine shutouts on the season, a 0.58 goals against average and a school record stretch of 631:57 without allowing a goal. Taylor Brand was named MVC Defensive Player of the Year and Goalkeeper Simone Busby was recognized as MVC Goalkeeper of the Year under his guidance. In 2013, McKendree led UE to a 9-6-4 season and fifth place finish in the MVC. The Aces won six straight matches from September 6 to October 6 and didn’t lose a match over a span of eight consecutive matches. Kayla Smith had a team-best five goals and four assists on the season. Evansville knocked off Missouri State in the opening round of the MVC Tournament 6-5 in penalty kills before falling 3-1 to Illinois State in the semifinals.

#AcesAces

During the 2012 campaign, McKendree guided the Aces to their second MVC regular-season championship during her tenure, despite UE being picked last in the MVC Preseason Poll. After a slow start to the season, McKendree’s squad found its stride in Valley play, as Evansville finished 4-1-1 in league action claim the regular-season crown. A total of six Aces were named to All-MVC squads, including a pair of freshmen in Simone Busby and Abby Springer, who were named the MVC Goalkeeper of the Year and MVC Freshman of the Year, respectively. Stephanie Thompson joined Busby and Springer on the All-MVC First Team, marking the first time since 2008 that three or more UE players were selected to the All-MVC First Team in the same season. In 2011, McKendree led the Aces to their seventh consecutive appearance in the MVC Tournament and a trip to the semifinals after earning victories in three consecutive must-win matches. The Aces knocked off Drake, first-place contender Missouri State, and the Bulldogs again in the MVC First Round at home, earning a trip to Springfield, Mo. as the No. 4 seed. Under McKendree’s direction, five Aces earned all-conference honors that spring. McKendree’s 2009 and 2010 teams were dominated by freshmen and sophomores, including 2010 MVC Freshman of the Year Breanna Beine, who made first team allconference and finished among the league scoring leaders with seven goals. Four UE players earned all-conference honors in 2010 as the Aces made a trip to the MVC Tournament semifinals. McKendree’s rise to the head coaching position at her alma mater began when she returned to UE in 2005 soon after Chris Pfau was hired as head coach. Evansville’s win total immediately more than tripled, from three in 2004 to 10 in 2005. In 2006, McKendree was part of the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Soccer Coaching Staff of the Year. And in 2007, the Aces climbed to second place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings and won 10 matches for the third consecutive year. When Pfau left UE to become head coach at Akron, McKendree was the popular choice to replace him.

2016 PURPLE ACES

Then came the outstanding 2008 season in which the Aces produced a 13-5-2 record and the all-time leading scorer in MVC history–senior forward Kayla Lambert. McKendree led Evansville to the NCAA Tournament as a player in 1998, 1999 and 2001. She is regarded as the best defender ever to play for the Purple Aces, and in 2006 was chosen for the Missouri Valley Conference Women’s Soccer All-Centennial Team. She was a first team all-MVC player all four years, from 1998 through 2001. McKendree was the MVC Defensive Player of the Year in 1999, and in 2000 was MVC Player of the Year. She was chosen third team on the 2000 NSCAA / Adidas Women’s Soccer Division I All-America Team, becoming Evansville’s first AllAmerican in women’s soccer. McKendree was also a member of the MVC Women’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete Team in 2000 and 2001. With her in the lineup, UE won three MVC regular season championships, three MVC post-season tournament championships, and reached the NCAA Tournament three times during her career. In McKendree’s four years as a player at Evansville, the Aces posted a record of 52-28-7. Krista and her husband, Mike Board, were married in December, 2008. They welcomed daughter Carly Rose Broad into the family in November 2013.

#AcesAces

Assistant Coach Fifth Season Western Kentucky ‘04 Grant Williams enters his fifth season on the Aces’ women’s soccer coaching staff in 2016. Last season, Williams helped guide the Aces back into the NCAA Tournament as the team went on to lift the Missouri Valley Conference tournament. Whitney Biggs stepped up on the big stage for UE in goal, not allowing a single score over 200 minutes of tournament play, earning the event’s Most Outstanding Player honor in the process. In 2014, UE advanced to the MVC Championship match, falling just shy of advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The Purple Aces ended the year 11-6-3 overall, including 3-2-1 in conference play. Williams helped UE post nine shutouts on the season and a 0.58 goals against average. He also mentored the Purple Aces goalkeepers to a record scoreless streak of 631:57. Goalkeeper Simone Busby was named MVC Goalkeeper of the Year under his guidance. During the 2013 season, Williams coached UE to another nine win season. The Purple Aces tallied seven shutouts during the year and advanced to the MVC Semifinals as well. In his first season with the Aces, Williams was part of the 2012 MVC Coaching Staff of the Year, as Evansville captured the MVC regular-season championship with a 4-1-1 mark in league play. Three Aces were named to the All-MVC First Team, including MVC Goalkeeper of the Year Simone Busby and MVC Freshman of the Year Abby Springer. Under his direction, the 2012 squad led the Valley with a 0.32 goals against average and four shutouts in league play. Williams comes to Evansville after a three-year stint at Eastern Illinois University. There, Williams’ primary responsibilities as assistant coach included recruiting, team travel and meals, scouting reports, and campus visits. He also helped with the planning and execution of practices, games, and camps. Under his direction, 10 Panthers earned all-conference honors, including three first team selections, while two were named Academic All-America. EIU earned berths all three seasons to the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament, including a semifinals appearance in 2010. Prior to his time at Eastern Illinois, Williams spent three seasons as an assistant at Western Kentucky University. The Lady Hilltoppers compiled a 40-13-7 record during his time in Bowling Green. WKU won the Sun Belt Conference title in 2007 and reached the SBC Tournament title game a year later. The Lady Toppers also earned a regional ranking from SoccerBuzz.com both seasons. Williams holds a United States Soccer Federation National “B” Coaching License. He also earned an NSCAA Regional Goalkeeping diploma in 2006. In 2010 and 2011, Williams worked camps at the University of Illinois, Notre Dame, and Penn State. Williams served as the assistant director of Southern Kentucky Soccer (2004-07), a staff coach in the Kentucky ODP program (2003-04, 2007) and a head coach in the SKY Soccer club (2002-07). He also worked with boys’ varsity and junior varsity teams at Bowling Green High School from 2000-05 after volunteering during the 1997-98 school year. Williams earned his bachelor’s degree in exercise science from WKU in 2004 and was a three-time President’s Scholar.

DOHERTY

After helping the Buffalo men’s program achieve a berth into the MidAmerican Conference championship match last November, Declan Doherty was named to the University of Evansville women’s soccer staff on Aug. 1, 2016. “I’m absolutely thrilled to have been given an opportunity to join a program as prestigious as Evansville,” Doherty said. “From working with Krista and [assistant coach] Grant Williams, it’s clear to see the care and passion that they have for the program, players and school. I look forward to learning as much as I can while helping the team towards another successful season.” Doherty, a native of Belfast, Northern Ireland, spent one season with the Bulls, helping the team post an 8-7-4 overall record, which marked the first winning season for UB since 2008. “I’m excited about bringing in a coach with the kind of character, work ethic and values that Declan has,” UE head coach Krista McKendree said. “I think he’s going to bring a different perspective for us with the depth of his experience at different levels. He also offers a lot of versatility for us, and he’s going to be able to work with both the field players and the goalkeepers.” Prior to joining UB, Doherty spent one season as the head coach and marketing director for the New York branch of Global Premier Soccer, an organization that is comprised of 18 clubs around the country. In his time with GPS, he coached three teams, guiding two of them to league championships. In that time, Doherty also assisted at Lancaster High School and served as the head coach of a junior varsity side that posted a 15-0-1 record. Before moving to America, Doherty was the head coach of the Ulster University Jordanstown women’s team in his native country, leading the squad to a 7-3-1 overall record and a National League championship in 2013. After that, he moved on to an assistant role with the Queens University Belfast men’s team, helping the squad post a 19-5-6 record in the process. Doherty, who also played for Rosario Youth Football Club before pursuing a coaching career, graduated from Ulster Jordanstown in 2013 with a degree in sport and exercise science.
