CELEBRATING 70 YEARS

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT This year, Hillel at the University of Delaware is celebrating its seventieth anniversary. When I look back on 70 years of Hillel, there is one story that sticks out to me, over and over again. Our story is one of growth. Our population of Jewish students has increased from just a few hundred to as many as 2,250. We have gone from just a few student leaders to 140 last year. Unstaffed or staffed with only one part-time professional for most of our history, this coming year will see a Hillel with 10 full-time professionals. These past few years have seen the most explosive growth of any time in our history, in large part thanks to our participation in the Comprehensive Excellence program, which has allowed us to increase our annual campaign half over in three years and provided us with the resources to serve a large Jewish population. Our Hillel is finally robust enough to provide effective services, a slate of engaging programming, and

substantive outreach. Our capacity has grown tremendously. We are able to offer internships now, more than 70, and provide students with opportunities to visit Israel, attend national conferences, network with alumni through our Alumni Directory, and learn from professionals and experts through our impACT leadership series. Most importantly, we are offering more ways than ever for students to connect with and explore their Jewish identities in their own personal ways. Because when I think about growth, I don’t just see our agency growing in new ways. I also see us providing opportunities for students to progress in their sense of self, and to find new connections to their community and heritage. I see our students becoming Jewish adults, and leaders, and going out into the world with the capacity to change it for the better. This is the growth I am most proud that our Hillel is achieving. Thank you for being a part of this journey, and this progress with us. I’m looking forward to another great year of growing an organization and growing our students.

PRESIDENT’S STATEMENT Hillel is about students who are on a Jewish journey. For some it is their first visit with Judaism. Through their experience with Hillel these students begin to understand where Judaism fits into their adult Jewish lives. For others, it is the continuation of a long and fulfilling journey that started with their Hebrew school, youth group or camp; Hillel is a welcomed part of their travels through an engaged Jewish life. No matter where these students are in their experience with Judaism Hillel at the University of Delaware serves them all and it does so extremely well. There is an old Jewish proverb that says “No matter what happens, travel gives you a story to tell.” As the board President of Hillel, it is my pleasure to tell the story of UD Hillel. It is one with many accomplishments and milestones. Some recent highlights include the success of our Birthright

Donna Schwartz, Executive Director

“ ...I hope to get more students involved in and

connected to the Jewish community here. With new staff and new freshmen, I know that the Kristol Center for Jewish Life will become a home away from home for students finding their place at UD.”

All journeys take thoughtful planning, and I want to note the expert preparation and leadership of Hillel’s dedicated professional staff who often go unrecognized. These are the folks who make sure that the programs are well designed, varied, and well executed. They help to connect our students and work with them to build a fulfilling and positive Jewish community at UD. It is also important to have good guidance and resources when planning a journey. We are fortunate to have a dedicated board who lead UD Hillel throughout the year. We are also grateful to the many donors who provide the resources which enable our students to have a good Jewish journey that enriches their lives at UD and informs their experiences after college. Thank you and I look forward to continuing this journey with all of you— board members, staff students, and supporters— in the coming year. Dr. Sheryl Kline, Board President

program-- within the past few years we have doubled the number of students who travel to Israel on this life changing trip. Our new impACT leadership program is teaching highly involved students to be proud of their heritage, connecting students to Jewish entrepreneurs and professionals, and broadening their horizons. Through these programs and many more we have helped Jewish students at UD to develop into young Jewish adults who will contribute to the world more positively and more Jewishly.

CAMPUS LIFE

SHABBAT ACROSS CAMPUS

Hillel at the University of Delaware is an innovative and nimble organization that strives to meet students where they are. Check out some of the innovative ways we’re bringing Judaism to students.

This year, over 300 students participated in three different Shabbat Across Campus experiences. This cutting-edge program brings Jewish experiences to students in their living spaces and aims to eliminate the barriers of travel and unfamiliarity from Shabbat observance. Students were supplied with challah and grape juice by Hillel, and then brought Shabbat to dorms, apartments, and restaurants across Newark.

CAMPUS ENGAGEMENT INTERNSHIP (CEI) Students connect best with their peers. That’s why ten student leaders are trained by Hillel International to take advantage of their unique social connections, from Greek organizations to seniors to honor students, and bring Jewish experiences and opportunities to unengaged students. This program is underwritten at UD by the Susser Family Trust.

ImpACT Series UD Hillel inaugurated the ImpACT program, a 10-part speaker series allowing students to reflect on their leadership skills and the role that Judaism will play in their adult lives, in the spring semester. 50 student leaders came together weekly to learn from figures as diverse as a successful Jewish deli owner and a health advocate and HIV/AIDS survivor, with their own unique leadership stories and career paths. Educational programs like ImpACT allow UD Hillel to build up the next generation of Jewish leaders.

ISRAEL

120 students took a free trip to Israel through Birthright with UD Hillel

Learning the culture and history of the Jewish people was such an amazing experience...I always felt a sense of being less Jewish than everyone else and Birthright changed that for me.”

THE STUART & SUZANNE GRANT COMPREHENSIVE EXCELLENCE SOCIETY In 2015 a group of visionary donors came together to make a significant investment in the success of the University of Delaware Hillel. Their generosity jump-started the capacity of the organization to grow dramatically, leading to the founding of the Stuart and Suzanne Grant Comprehensive Excellence Society. Operated in partnership with Hillel International, this program has set a new bar for excellence within the Hillel movement. Hundreds more Jewish students at UD are engaged through impactful programs, leadership experiences and immersive trips. These experiences are promoting the next generation of Jewish leaders by inspiring students to make an enduring committment to Jewish life, learning and Israel.

Thank you to the Stuart and Suzanne Grant Comprehensive Excellence Society members: Phyllis & Norman Aerenson, Yetta & Frank (zl) Chaiken, Stuart and Suzanne Grant, The Kristol Family, The Pincus Family, Carol & Dan Stickberger, Toni Young
