What is a Blue Hen?

University of Delaware’s athletic teams have one of the most unique nicknames in all of college athletics – “The Fightin’ Blue Hens.” It is a name they carry with pride that stretches back over 200 years of history of the state of Delaware. The Blue Hen nickname has been continuously used by all University of Delaware intercollegiate teams since 1911. On December 9, 1775, the Continental Congress resolved that a military battalion was to be raised from the lower three counties along the Delaware River. Thus was born the Delaware Regiment, a group of eight companies representing New Castle, Kent and Sussex counties. The second company was composed of men from Kent County and was under the command of Captain John Caldwell, an avid fan and owner of gamecocks. The militia often amused themselves by staging cock fights with these birds which were of a breed known as the Kent County Blue Hen, having some blue plumage. The renown of these chickens spread rapidly during that time when cock fighting was a popular form of amusement, and the “Blue Hens’ Chickens” quickly developed a reputation for ferocity and fighting success.

Location Annapolis, Md. Lorton, Va. Williamsburg, Va. Apalachin, N.Y. Powells Point, N.C. Wilmington, N.C. Williamsburg, Va. Malvern, Pa. Farmville, Va. Annapolis, Md. Southport, N.C.

Capt. Caldwell’s company likewise acquired a considerable reputation for its own fighting prowess in engagements with the British at Long Island, White Plains, Trenton, and Princeton, and was soon known as “the Blue Hen Chicken” company. One version of the story states that Caldwell’s company rushed into battle screaming “We’re sons of the Blue Hen and we’re game to the end!” Captain Caldwell’s company was part of Col. John Haslet’s first Delaware regiment that formed near the outset of the Revolution in January, 1776, and in August, 1781, remnants of the regiment were still battling at Eutaw Springs, SC. Although often referred to as “The Fighting Delawares,” Haslet’s regiment also won the sobriquet, “The Blue Hen Chickens,” which has become the nickname for all Delawareans. The name was formally adopted by the Delaware General Assembly in April, 1939 when the “Blue Hen Chicken” was named the official state bird. UD’s College of Agricultural Sciences maintains a breeding group of the Blue Hen Chicken on its campus farm. The UD mascot, YoUDee, made his debut in September 1993. YoUDee stands 6-foot, 8-inches tall with a 6-1 wing-span and size 28FF sneakers.

Blue Hen Men’s Golf

MIKE KEOGH HEAD COACH 13TH SEASON AT DELAWARE DELAWARE ‘73 Michael Keogh was named the University of Delaware’s new men’s golf head coach July 21, 2001. The 12th head coach in UD history and just the fourth since 1955, Keogh begins his 13th season in 2013-14.

head Coach Mike Keogh The Blue Hens improved in 2008-09 under Keogh, as UD placed among the top five in eight of 10 tournaments on the year. Delaware captured the Cornell Invitational, and came in second at the Navy and Scotty Duncan Invitationals. Justin Martinson earned medalist honors at the George Washington and Lafayette Invitationals during the spring season, and the Blue Hens finished seventh at the CAA Championships. Keogh led Delaware to his most successful season in 2009-10, as the Blue Hens won a school-record four consecutive tournaments during the fall of 2009. After winning its own Scotty Duncan Memorial, UD then captured the Joe Agee Invitational and Lincoln Mercury Intercollegiate before closing the run with a victory at the Andrew Geyer Memorial Classic. The Blue Hens posted two other top-five finishes during the spring, and later placed sixth at the CAA Championships. Additionally Keogh oversaw an incredible season by Justin Martinson, who became the first UD golfer to win a conference title by earning medalist honors with a four-shot victory at the CAA Tournament. Martinson, who set a Blue Hen single-season record for lowest average round, finished 13th at the NCAA Regionals and won two other tournaments on the year.

Keogh, 61, is a 1973 graduate of the University of Delaware, where he was a letterwinner on the golf team, and also holds a master’s degree from Wilmington College in 1999.

Delaware continued its strong run during the 2010-11 campaign, finishing among the top 10 in all but two tournaments while claiming team titles at the Navy Fall Classic and Villanova Invitational. Martinson earned first team All-CAA honors, while he concluded his career as the school’s career leader in lowest stroke average.

During his 12 seasons at the helm, Keogh has led his teams to 103 tournament top five finishes, including capturing 14 team titles. His 2012-13 squad, which posted six top five tournament finishes during the season, tied for its highest Colonial Athletic Association Tournament showing with a fifth place finish. Keogh’s 2005-06 squad also placed fifth the CAA Tournament.

Additionally, Martinson carded the two lowest rounds in Delaware history with a 64 at the Lincoln Mercury Intercollegiate and a 65 at the Navy Fall Classic, while fellow senior Kevin McLister fired a pair of 66 rounds. Keogh led the Blue Hens to another strong year in 2011-12, which featured six top-five finishes including defending the team title at the Navy Fall Classic. In the spring Greg Matthias became the second Blue Hen in three years to claim the CAA title, as he earned medalist honors at nearby Wilmington Country Club.

Through his tenure at Delaware, Keogh has coached two conference tournament champions and NCAA Tournament participants in Justin Martinson (2010) and Greg Matthias (2012). Martinson has played professionally on the Web.com Tour. In addition, Joey McLister, who enjoyed a record-breaking career for the Blue Hens in 2004-07, currently plays on the eGolf Tour and has competed in two PGA Tour events over the last two seasons.

Keogh lettered in 1972 during his career playing under legendary head coach Scotty Duncan, helping the team post an 11-7 dual record and a fourth place finish at the Middle Atlantic Conference championships.

In his first season at the helm of the Blue Hens in 2001-2002, Keogh led the squad to an eighth place finish at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships. His teams finished a season-best fifth at both the Wesley and Lafayette Invitationals.

An English teacher at Newark High School, he is a member of the Delaware State Golf Association, Delaware State Teacher’s Association, and Newark Country Club.

In his second season, the Hens placed ninth at the CAA championships but captured three tournament titles during the season, winning at the Army Fall Invitational, the Goldey Beacom Fall Invitational, and the season-ending Scotty Duncan Memorial Invitational. During the 2003-04 campaign, the Hens posted six top five team finishes, including a second place finish at Scotty Duncan Memorial hosted by the Blue Hens during the spring and a second place finish at the John McDonald Classic hosted by Temple during the fall. The Hens placed ninth at the CAA Championships. As a team, the Hens improved their stroke average to 77.59 for the season after posting a mark of 80.94 the previous year. During the 2004-05 campaign, the Blue Hens improved to an eighth place finish at the CAA championships, falling just one stroke short of seventh place, and posted a tournament victory at the spring Goldey-Beacom Invitational. The Hens also placed second at the fall Goldey-Beacom Invitational, were fourth at the Don Mershon Invitational and Scotty Duncan Memorial Tournament, and sixth at the Lafayette Invitational. His team’s 2005-06 season was the best in five years in the CAA as he led the Blue Hens to a fifth place finish in the team standings led by Joe McLister, who became the first UD individual to earn All-CAA honors and place in the top 10 in the league tournament with a 10th place finish. The team posted six top five tournament finishes during the season, including winning the team title at UD’s Scotty Duncan Memorial Tournament to finish out the season. Delaware’s team cumulative stroke average of 75.69 established a new school record. The 2006-07 squad, led once again by all-time UD career stroke average leader McLister, posted nine top 10 finishes, including winning the Hens’ own Scotty Duncan Memorial, placing third in the Fairfield Spring Invitational, and fourth in the William & Mary Spring Invitational. The Hens registered a sixth place team finish at the CAA Championships. Delaware finished seventh at the conference championships in 2007-08, when the Blue Hens posted three third place finishes and one fourth place finish.

Assistant Coaches

PATRICK AYLWARD

TOMMY ELLISON

ASSISTANT COACH EIGHTH SEASON AT UD MARYMOUNT ‘96

ASSISTANT COACH FOURTH SEASON AT UD DELAWARE ‘09

Patrick Aylward begins his eighth season as the top assistant to University of Delaware golf head coach Mike Keogh in 2013-14.

One of the top golfers in recent University of Delaware history, Tommy Ellison begins his fourth season with the Blue Hen coaching staff during the 2013-14 season.

During his first year in Newark, he helped the Blue Hens finish among the top five in eight of 10 tournaments on the season. Delaware captured the Cornell Invitational title in the fall, while Justin Martinson earned medalist honors at the George Washington and Lafayette Invitationals during the spring season.

Ellison, a left-hander from Bethany Beach, Del., enjoyed an outstanding career for the Blue Hens in 2005-09, serving as a team captain as a senior and being named the UD Alumni Association/John J. DeLuca/Scotty Duncan Memorial Team Most Valuable Player as a junior.

The 2009-10 season was even more successful for the Blue Hens, who captured four tournament titles - all in consecutive weeks - during the fall and compiled 11 Top 10 finishes. Delaware placed sixth at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships thanks to the play of junior Justin Martinson, who captured the individual title and moved on to place 13th at the NCAA Southeast Regionals. Martinson, who also was named the CAA Player of the Year, became the first UD golfer to win a conference title since 1989.

A four-year letterwinner, Ellison ranks No. 3 on the all-time Blue Hen career stroke average list with a mark of 75.10 in 75 rounds. He posted 15 Top 20 and eight Top 10 finishes during his career, and finished 15th at the Colonial Athletic Association Championships in 2008 and 22nd in 2009.

Delaware continued its strong run during 2010-11, finishing among the top 10 in all but two tournaments while claiming team titles at the Navy Fall Classic and Villanova Invitational. Martinson earned first team AllCAA honors, while he concluded his career as the school’s career leader in lowest stroke average. Additionally Martinson carded the two lowest rounds in Delaware history with a 64 at the Lincoln Mercury Intercollegiate and a 65 at the Navy Fall Classic, while fellow senior Kevin McLister fired a pair of 66 rounds.

He shot a career-best 68 twice during his career and he owns the fourth best single season stroke average in school history with a mark of 74.35 in 2008-09. He also posted the seventh best stroke average in 2005-06 (74.71) and the eight best mark (74.85) in 2007-08. His best career tournament finish was a second place showing at the Lafayette Invitational in 2008. Ellison, who earned his degree in European history at Delaware in 2009, enjoyed a standout high school career at Worcester (Md.) Prep where he earned team and conference Most Valuable Player awards and was a National Honory Society member.

Aylward helped lead the Blue Hens to another strong year in 2011-12, which featured six top-five finishes including defending the team title at the Navy Fall Classic. In the spring Greg Matthias became the second Blue Hen in three years to claim the CAA title, as he earned medalist honors at nearby Wilmington Country Club. A native of Highland Falls, N.Y., Aylward, 36, earned a bachelor’s degree in health and fitness management at NCAA Division III Marymount in 1996 following an outstanding four-year playing career. He was a twoyear team captain and helped the team set a school record for all-time low team score in 1996. He also played one season for the MU soccer team. While at James I. O’Neill High School in Fort Montgomery, N.Y., he was a two-year captain and a state sectional qualifier in 1991 and 1992. He served as a volunteer assistant coach at Marymount in 1997 and 1998 before becoming head coach at his alma mater in 1999. He left as the school’s all-time winningest coach and his golfers set six school records for lowest match score by a team and an individual during his tenure. In addition to his role as assistant coach at Delaware, Aylward works with Bank of America. He and his wife, Maribeth, reside in Newark with their two daughters, Emma (15) and Annie (14), and son, Davis (3).

Blue Hen Men’s Golf With nearly three decades of success athletically and academically, the Colonial Athletic Association has built a reputation as one of the nation’s top collegiate conferences. The CAA encompasses many of the nation’s largest metropolitan areas with a geographic footprint that stretches from Boston to Charleston, S.C. The conference has produced 16 national team champions in five different sports, 33 individual national champions, 13 national players of the year, 12 national coaches of the year and 13 Honda Award winners. Just as impressive, however, are the honors accumulated away from competition, which include five Rhodes Scholars and 23 NCAA post-graduate scholars. In 2012-13, more than 1,900 of the league’s 4,000 student-athletes received the Commissioner’s Academic Award after posting at least a 3.2 grade point average while lettering in a varsity sport. The conference had 23 teams in 15 different sports receive NCAA Public Recognition Awards based on the latest Academic Progress Report released in 2013. The landscape of the conference stretches along the majority of the East Coast, and includes several of the nation’s top media markets – New York (1), Philadelphia (4), Boston (7), Washington, D.C. (9) and Baltimore (25). The number of television homes in the CAA market exceeds 20 million. The CAA conducts championships in 22 sports. Male athletes compete for championships in baseball, basketball, cross country, football, golf, lacrosse, soccer, swimming & diving, tennis and track & field. Female athletes battle for conference titles in basketball, cross country, field hockey, golf, lacrosse, rowing, soccer, softball, swimming & diving, tennis, track & field and volleyball. In 2012-13, 27 teams earned NCAA Tournament berths and 43 student-athletes received All-America honors in 14 different sports. The conference has made its presence known nationally in men’s basketball with two teams – George Mason (2006) and VCU (2011) – advancing to the NCAA Final Four over the past seven years. CAA teams have combined to win 41 games in CAA Commissioner postseason play since 2006, including 14 victories in the NCAA Tournament. The CAA has posted at least one NCAA Tournament Tom Yeager win in six of the past eight years, including the last four in a row. The conference has seen five or more teams reach postseason play in four of the last five seasons. In women’s basketball, 2013 CAA champion Delaware defeated West Virginia and North Carolina to become the 12th CAA team to reach the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Behind the play of Honda Award winner Elena Delle Donne, the Blue Hens finished the season ranked #13 in the final USA Today Coaches Top 25 poll. Drexel captured the WNIT championship with a 46-43 victory over Utah and James Madison reached the quarterfinals of the WNIT. CAA teams have gone 20-9 in postseason play over the past two years. The conference also excels in many other sports. CAA squads have combined to win 10 field hockey national titles since the championship began in 1981. Three men’s soccer teams earned NCAA Tournament berths last season and each current member of the conference has reached the NCAA Tournament since 2006. In softball, Hofstra reached the NCAA Super Regionals in 2012 and the CAA placed two teams (Hofstra and James Madison) in the NCAA’s for the first time last season. At least two women’s soccer teams have reached the second round of the NCAA Tournament three times in the past six seasons. William & Mary’s men’s cross country squad has made the NCAA Championship in 12 of the past 14 years and the women’s team had two runners (Elaina Balouris and Emily Stites) earn All-America honors in 2012. Delaware and Towson have each reached the Final Four of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship. The CAA sent three teams to the NCAA Baseball Championship in 2013 and has had at least 11 players selected in nine of the last 11 Major League Baseball drafts. The conference also had individuals earn All-America honors in women’s lacrosse, track and field and swimming & diving last season and had players nationally ranked in tennis and golf. CAA member institutions are committed to excellence in the classroom. The Colonial Academic Alliance was created in 2002 by the league’s presidents with a goal of expanding their partnership to all aspects of university education and life outside of intercollegiate athletics. Among the programs that have been established are an undergraduate research conference, coordination of study abroad programs, visiting faculty programs and a recent partnership with NBC Learn to provide educational videos to over 8,500 public schools across the United States. CAA schools are also very active in community service projects. The CAA Blood Challenge, which is held each fall, has raised more than 36,000 units of blood over the past 11 years. The first-ever CAA Food Drive Challenge last winter resulted in over 9,500 pounds of donated food. 12

The conference traces its roots back to 1983 when two of its current members- James Madison University and the College of William and Mary - were aligned with East Carolina University, George Mason University, the United States Naval Academy and the University of Richmond as a basketball league (ECAC South). During the next two years, the league added 11 sports, acquired two new members (the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and American University) and decided to form a new conference. The transformation from ECAC South to CAA took place on June 6, 1985. Old Dominion University joined the CAA in 1991 and was followed by Virginia Commonwealth University in 1995. The conference added the University of Delaware, Drexel University, Hofstra University and Towson University in 2001. Georgia State University and Northeastern University became members of the conference in 2005 and the College of Charleston began its first year as a CAA member on July 1, 2013. Elon University will join the conference beginning in 2014-15. A leader in international education, UD offered the first study-abroad program in the world in 1923, and celebrates its 90th anniversary of study abroad in 2013. UD ranks third nationally among public doctoral institutions in study-abroad participation. More than one of every three UD undergraduate students (34.7%) studies overseas; programs are offered in nearly 50 countries. In 2010, the Education Advisory Board’s University Leadership Council cited UD’s study-abroad program as a model.

UD’s freshman retention rate, 92 percent, ranks in the 97th percentile among universities nationwide. At 77 percent, UD’s six-year graduation rate is more than 21 percentage points higher than the national average. UD’s four-year graduation rate, 61.8 percent, is nearly double the national average. UD’s Latino and African American students also graduate in numbers far higher than the U.S. average—nearly 23 percentage points higher and 18 points higher, respectively.

UD’s exceptional faculty includes internationally known authors, scientists and artists, among them a Nobel laureate, Guggenheim and Fulbright fellows, members of the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering and American Association for the Advancement of Science.

UD has graduated 12 Rhodes scholars since the celebrated program began in 1904. Our most recent Rhodes scholar—2011 graduate Matthew Watters—is now studying global health science at Oxford. UD also produces numerous Marshall and Truman scholars, and has been named a Truman Scholarship Honor Institution for its outstanding record of Truman scholars selected.

Many of UD’s doctoral programs were ranked among the best in the U.S. in a recent National Research Council survey that examined criteria such as student financial support, average time to degree completion, student career plans and diversity of the academic environment. UD graduate programs in physical therapy, engineering, education, business, city management, mathematics and public affairs have been recognized in recent Best Graduate Schools guides published by U.S. News Media Group.

A citation in the Princeton Review once referred to the UD campus as “absolutely the most gorgeous anywhere,” and a 2007 Washington Post story noted, “with its elegant, elongated Green, [UD] is a stunning landscape of Georgian Colonial red-brick, white-columned architecture to rival anything conceived by Thomas Jefferson.”
