UC San Diego vs. Concordia Irvine Monday, Feb. 1 2 p.m.
Tritons to Host Eagles to Start 2010 The UC San Diego men’s tennis team begins its 2010 campaign with a 2 p.m. home match against Concordia Irvine on Monday. The Tritons traveled across town to take on the University of San Diego Toreros this past Saturday in an exhibition match but fell, 7-0.
Returners Highlight New UCSD Roster The 2010 roster for the Tritons features 10 returners, including six underclassmen. Without any seniors on the squad, leading the way are four juniors - Erik Elliott, Armaun Emami, Vincent Nguyen and Naveen Dixit. Preseason Division II Rankings Released The Tritons have been ranked No. 35 in the D-II ITA preseason rankings. UCSD’s duo of Emami and Austin West are positioned at No. 17 in doubles. Scouting the Eagles of Concordia Irvine This season marks the fourth-consecutive year that the Eagles and Tritons have met. After UCSD topped CUI 7-2 on Feb. 22, 2007, the Eagles came back to win both the 2008 and 2009 meetings. Monday’s match also serves as the season opener for CUI, a squad returning five of its six starters from last year. The Eagles’ top two singles players, Andrey Potapkin and Augusto Elias, received All-Golden State Athletic Conference honors in 2009 and CUI’s John Norton was named the NAIA Men’s Tennis Coach of the Year after leading the team to the program’s first NAIA Tournament quarterfinal appearance. Scouting the Cougars of Azusa Pacific Although the Tritons and Cougars did not meet in the 2009 spring season, the two squads have plenty of history. Most recently, UCSD used a doubles sweep to grab a 5-4 victory in 2007 before APU secured an easy 8-1 win in 2008. This past fall, several Tritons and Cougars challenged each other in the 53rd Annual Southern California Intercollegiate Championships. On day two of the tournament, UCSD’s Sam Ling topped Ilja Ikonnikov while Nguyen held on for a 6-2, 4-6 (10-2) victory against Whitman Hough. Similarly to CUI, the Cougars fell in the quarterfinal round of last year’s NAIA Tournament.
