As an undergraduate at UC San Diego, Sessen was actively involved in several on-campus organizations and sat on the executive boards of the Student Initiated Outreach and Recruitment Commission and the Black Student Union. “Through my participation in these organizations I had the great privilege of assisting in the development and realization of programs intended to improve recruitment efforts of historically marginalized groups,” Sessen said. “My experiences at UC San Diego cultivated and solidified my commitment and passion for outreach and service work, and I consider myself fortunate to continue such work in both my career, practicing disability and civil rights law, and current membership in organizations such as the Black Women Lawyer’s Association of Los Angeles, the National Bar Association and Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.”

Mohamud’s journey from Somalia to college was nothing short of extraordinary as he and his family were forced to flee to Kenya, where they lived in a refugee camp before immigrating to the U.S. “Coming into UC San Diego for the first time, I felt underequipped,” he said. “However, I had a dream and nothing to lose. I had to set an example for my 10 surviving siblings. I had to prove to them that they were as good as anybody, and that they could go on to great universities as well.” At UC San Diego, Mohamud served as director of campus relations for the UC San Diego Foundation for International Medical Relief for Children (FIMRC). “From volunteering with FIMRC, I saw the multiple levels at which physicians could make a difference. We worked with ‘grassroots’ doctors who directly provide healthcare in developing countries, and I saw how their implementation of health education, water sanitation, and basic level of healthcare made a significant difference in the lives of the underserved.”


The Basement is 3,000 sq ft of work and incubation space dedicated to student entrepreneurs. Last quarter, $80,000 was raised, engaging 21 student startups.

Munjal is a serial entrepreneur who focuses on building companies from zero to millions in revenue. He sold his previous company, Riya Inc (makers of Like.com), to Google to create Google Shopping. Prior to Riya he was co-founder and CEO of Andale Inc, a provider of software to eBay merchants that grew from zero to double digit millions in revenue. BusinessWeek declared Munjal one of the Top 10 up-and-coming CEOs, and he has been quoted in hundreds of magazines including the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times, Business 2.0. Munjal sits on the advisor board to a number of very early stage startups, and he is also a charter member of TiE in Bangalore.
