First year student catches big break As a new arrival to Christchurch, first year University of Canterbury engineering student Katherine Glover caught a lot of new sights during Orientation Week 2010 (“It’s quite a big change from Wellington!”).

But the one sight she’s certain to remember above all others was the one that scored her free bus rides for a year and a big cash prize: a Metro bus sitting right outside the student association’s door. It was part of Metro’s Orientation campaign to introduce students to its Christchurch bus service. Having just arrived from Wellington, Katherine quickly followed the throngs of new students and signed up for her own Metrocard.

Canterbury students get another chance to win with Metro during MidWinter Fest. There’s $500 of Westfield Shopping Vouchers and a term’s free bus travel worth $400 up for grabs! It’s easy to enter – just fill in an entry form at the Metro bus outside UCSA (daily from 12 July – 16 July), you can’t miss it. Then use your Metrocard at least once during Term 3 and you’re in to win. Plus, look out for Metro’s wandering ‘critters’ around campus and you could catch yourself a spot prize.

But the Metrocard isn’t all she received – as the winner of Metro’s Orientation competition, she also picked up a year’s worth of free bus travel, and $1000 cash from the University of Canterbury Sustainability Office. Living in the University Halls of Residence without a car could make it hard for a student to ever see much beyond Ilam, but the buses give Katherine and her friends an easy way to get around. “Because we’re close to the bus stops, it’s really convenient to go anywhere. You can always be guaranteed there’ll be one in, like, five minutes,” Katherine says.
