Lucky The Shilling Club Presents

One Side:

The entire week leading up to this moment I was very nervous and anxious, namely for the fact that I have never been set up on blind date before, let alone write about the experience about it afterwards! However, I was mostly excited for this as I really needed some spice thrown in my life and my dating life has pretty much been non-existent since starting uni. I arrived two minutes early and it was nice to see that my date had already been seated and was waiting for me patiently, albeit probably slightly nervous too. The one thing I noticed straight away was that The Shilling Club was jam packed with people and it was a bit hard to hear even your own thoughts, but as I later found out, it was due to the UCSA election campaigning results. We both sat down at our table and I immediately introduced myself and asked for his name, so I wouldn’t have to spend the entire time wondering what his name was. We got the typical small talk introductory conversation going like what we both study and then the waiter came to get our orders. We both got the dumplings, which in my books is a big win as I adore dumplings. He told me about himself how he is a thirdyear engineering student studying mechatronics and afterwards he wants to become a literal rocket scientist, to which I was very surprised because I didn’t know anyone who wanted to be a real-life rocket scientist. We kept the conversation going and it honestly felt very easy and comfortable talking to him, we didn’t have a single moment where there were any awkward pauses or uncomfortable silences. It turns out we have a few things in common. He asked me

what kind of TV shows I like to watch and I said just to name a few, The Office (USA) and Rick and Morty which I watched on Netflix, he laughed and confessed that he also enjoyed watching them. We both ended up talking about the fact that we binged watched Final Space in 2 days on Netflix too. I asked him what kind of music he liked to listen to and I mentioned the fact that I’m a Yeezy fan, he unfortunately broke and obliterated my heart and all hope in this date in that moment because he was NOT A FAN. To add salt to the wound, he then told me he was a James Blunt fan and even went to his concert at the beginning of the year. I didn’t know how to recover after this life altering revelation. Here I was thinking that this man could have the possibly even have the potential to be my husband, but definitely not after hearing this news. However, he did redeem himself later by saying that he does enjoy most other genres of music. In the end I think the date went pretty well, all things considered, he was a great conversationalist and had a lovely smile, he seemed genuine and it was a bonus to get free food and drinks (shout out to CANTA). I felt like we ran out of things to talk about at the end of the date, so I simply ended the date saying “sorry I have to go home and study” which I wasn’t lying about. We left The Shilling Club both full of dumplings and hopefully great impressions about each other, we even exchanged a quick hug and we did the classic “can I add you on Facebook” afterwards.
