Cancer survivor Annie Cloete participated in Shavathon in 2007 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer and has been supporting it ever since.

When she went for her regular mammogram the radiographer picked up a small lump on her right breast and sent her for a biopsy.

“I was a bit shocked when my doctor phonedmeatworkacoupleofdayslater and told me to come see him as soon as possible. I still believed all would be okay as I lived a healthy lifestyle.

“Unfortunately, he confirmed that it was a malignant tumor and referred me to a local specialist who recommended surgery. So many things go through your mind and I heard so many bad

stories.”

“The surgeon, myself and my husband decided on a lumpectomy followed by radium treatment for six weeks. I was not ready for chemotherapy as I didn’t want to lose my hair. Look at me now, doing it voluntarily,” she laughs.

“After completing a five-year course on Tamoxifen, which by the way increases the hot flushes and mood swings, I can relatively say I am now doing very well and am in remission.”

APPI Saiccor (Pty) Ltd continues to dispose its coal ash to local block makers in the Umkomaas area. These block makers do not have a waste management licence in terms of the National Environmental Management: Waste Act (59 of 2008).

provincial co-ordinator, said in September 2014, Peter Morris, Sappi Saiccor general manager, confirmed in a meeting with AfriForum that all of Sappi’s coal ash was delivered to NPC Cement in Port Shepstone, and that it no longer provided coal ash to the local block makers.

“It is with disappointment that AfriForum learnt of the decision by the Department of Environmental Affairs (DEA) to grant a temporary authorisation for Sappi to supply ash to affiliates of the Umkomaas Block Makers Association in November 2014. The mandate of the DEA is to

A CONCERNED Amanzimtoti resident has reported to eThekwini on several occasions regarding sewage streaming into the river alongside the bridge on Riverside Road.

He says while the municipality had correctedtheproblemafterhereported it, the correction was only a shortterm solution.

“The problem occurs when pump station three trips.

“When this happens the sewage flows out of the manholes next to the

Various changes to the waste legislation since then has complicated and prolonged this process but did not prevent it from continuing. While this process was progressing, a member of the local community saw it fit during 2014 to bring the issue of ash being supplied to local block-makers to the attention of local media. THE Metro Police case against the Isip­ ingo business family was withdrawn on Wednesday before going to court says one of the family members, Shelina Outar.

She said the family is elated at the outcome.

“We thought the case was going to be remanded again. We are elated at theoutcomeandarenowgoingforward with our case against Metro Police. We are also now getting our bail money back from them, which we had to pay when they charged us at the Metro police station,” she said.

Tipper trucks unfairly charged for overloading >> ‘I am a law­abiding citizen who complies with regulations. I do not intentionally overload my trucks’ community spirit, so when I returned I decided to attempt it again, but on a much larger scale.

I met two youngsters who are very energetic and creative. They said I should start the group as a Facebook page and within a day it was done. The group is called My Sapphire CommUnity. The ‘U’ for unity being our focal point,” Rathbone says.

“I am organising an event for the Highlands Gathering. My Sapphire Community will have several stalls grouped together. The Funda Ninja boys will also walk their dogs with SPCA on one of the days.

“This is the new South Africa and I believe we have turned a corner. We should celebrate our diversity of cultures by holding events and having fun together, that is how you build a community.”

MANZIMTOTI businessman Isshwar Singh says he is tired of defending his case in court regarding his tipper trucks being charged for overloading due to technicalities and is considering taking counter legal action.

Singh says the problem arises when the same volume of sand (ash, river sand, stones, blocks and bricks) is being loaded.

It has a variable content influencing its weight.

For example if pit sand is picked up a day after it has rained on a eight­ton truck with six cubic metres, the sand is heavier, but the volume required by his client is 6m3.

If he loads less the load will be short once it dries. River sand is worse because it is dredged out of the water and loaded straight onto trucks and at this stage it will weigh more.

On Wednesday, the court significantly reduced the fine charged, but Singh says a more permanent solution is needed.

ENNY Smith has made the welfare of others her life’s priority.

Smith had worked at Tecoma Pre-Primary for 24 years when she retired. In 1979, after a short break she joined Kingsburgh Child and Family Welfare.

“I think I sat for nearly two years in meetings before I felt I could voice any sort of opinion.

The members seemed to have insight and good sense to head off any big problem before it came to a head,” Smith says.

Today Smith leads the organisation.

Cancer sufferer seeks financial aid FEVER REPORTER NICO Jordt was diagnosed with cancer in 1992. Now aged 48 he has had numerous chemotherapy treatments and is suffering with a high acidity disorder.

“He was taken to some of the best rheumatologists in the city and ended up bedridden due to severe gout, arthritis and kidney impairment between August and December 2013. His kidneys cannot cope with the drug that is used for his condition,” says his wife Gwen.

She says her parents taught her to think of others more than herself and she passed this on to her children.

IN 2011, the eThekwini Municipality took a decision to only allow the erection of headstones on gravesites, not tombstones.

This was done to allow for more burial space and thus ensure uniformity of gravesites, which would ultimately contribute to the aesthetic look of cemeteries.

Numerous residents have expressed unhappiness about the new by-law.

The rule was reviewed and people’s feelings taken into consideration and as a result, council has rescinded its decision and decided to revert back to the old system.

A ban limiting what mourners can place on the graves of their loved ones in Durban has been lifted and residents are allowed to erect tombstones onthegravesitesof their loved ones in all municipal cemeteries. — Supplied.

INGSWAY High’s 2012 head boy, now a motivational speaker, Liyanda Nzimande addressed pupils last week and talked about desire, fear and dreams.

“A wise man once told me ‘Life can be as simple or as complicated as you make it. Do what you know is right. Avoid doing what you know is wrong and do whatever it is that you do to the best of your ability’.”

He said that some people don’t know what hard work is.

“Youwanttoachievethosedistinctions but you are not prepared to put in the hard work to achieve them. You are not willing to burn the midnight oil.”

Nzimande told of how he worked to­ wards becoming head prefect in matric and the representative council of learners chairman and achieving his goals by re­ minding himself of his goals and dreams and believing it was possible, but by

achieving so much a downfall ensued.

In his first year of university in Johan­ nesburg his social life started taking over.

Hebecameinfatuatedwithbecomeapub­ lic figure. He however passed his first year and his modules’ second year soon ap­ proached. Thinking he could continue the same life he lived in first year he failed vital modules that led him to be excluded from the faculty of B.Com. Stressed and de­ pressed he didn’t know what to do.

“I was faced with an ultimatum. At that point in my life it became evident to me that the only guarantee in life is death and the only constant is change.

“Standing at a cross road and you don’t know which way to turn this is when you have to trust in your gut feeling, a God or a super natural power. You have to believe that the dots in the future will connect be­ fore you even get to the future,” he says.

He warned pupils not to spend so much time with other people that they forget who they are.

“I dare you to spend some time alone.

NDIEN Bathabile Dlamini, minister van maatskaplike ontwikkeling, haar sin kry en die betaling van kindertoelae tot die ouderdom van 23 verleng, sal bykomende R6 miljard tot R10,3 miljard vir kindertoelae in die begroting ingeruim moet word.

Só het Solidariteit Helpende Hand gesê op die vooraand van die nasionale begrotingsrede wat deur die minister van finansies Nhlanhla Nene gelewer is. Die organisasie het gewaarsku dat so ’n besluit ondeurdag sal wees omdat dit ’n presedent sou skep dat die staat vir gesonde volwassenes moet sorg.

Dlamini het reeds verlede jaar

aangekondig dat die moontlikheid ondersoek word om die afsnypunt te verhoog. Dit is nie duidelik wanneer die planne in werking gestel sal word indien dit goedgekeur word nie.

Nagenoeg 70% van die meer as 15,9 miljoen Suid-Afrikaners wat in 2013/14 vir toelae gekwalifiseer het, het die kindertoelaag ontvang. Volgens syfers wat Dlamini in Oktober bekendgemaak het, is R39,6 miljard in die 2013/14-boekjaar aan kindertoelae uitbetaal.

“In die 2013/14-belastingjaar is R310 miljard deur persoonlike inkomstebelasting ingesamel. Die uitbreiding van dié toelaag aan persone totenmethul23steverjaardagsaldus

addisionele belastinglas ekwivalent aan sowat twee persent tot drie persent van die totale persoonlike inkomstebelasting vir die jaar skep,” sê dr. Danie Brink, uitvoerende direkteur van Helpende Hand. “’n Staat wat sy mense leer om afhanklik te wees, bou nie ’n volhoubare toekoms nie,” sê Brink.

“Die huidige stelsel waarin belastingbetalers leeggemelk word, is ook nie volhoubaar nie. Die verhoging van die ouderdomsperk sal bykomende druk op die belasting-

betaler plaas en nog belastinggeld in ’n onvolhoubare stelsel verkwis.

“Ons sou graag wou sien dat die regering die privaat sektor deur ’n verskeidenheid van stappe aanmoedig om wins te maak, te groei en mense in diens te nee,” sê Brink.

Hysêhoeweldieregering die toelae regverdig deur aan te voer dat dit gelykheid en volhoubare gemeenskappe sal bevorder, het dit juis die teenoorgestelde uitwerking en lei dit net tot groter afhanklikheid van die staat. — Verskaf.

BMW’s new 2 Series goes on sale this month in SA.

OLLOWING the launch of its new 2 Series Active Tourer in South Africa in February, BMW will expand its local 2 series line­up with the addition of a new rear­wheel drive convertible in March.

The new 2 Series convertible, replacing the 1 Series drop­top, borrows heavily from its coupé sibling (launched in SA in March 2014) in terms of specification and design, though tweaks were made to accommo­

date its fabric roof.

Compared to its predecessor, its length has increased by 72mm to 4.4m, width by 26mm to 1.7m, wheelbase by 30mm to 2.6m and it also has a 35mm wider rear­

hatch.

The new 2 Series convertible will be availableinSouthAfricainthreepetrolvar­ iants — M235i (240kW/450Nm), 228i (180kW/350Nm) and 220i 135kW/270Nm. Engines can be mated to either a six­speed manual or eight­speed auto.

The new convertible is offered in four specifications — Advantage, Luxury Line, Sport Line and M Sport. Prices will be re­ leased closer to its official launch date on March 15.

Its powered fabric roof (black, silver or brown) can open ­ or close ­ in 20 seconds at up to 50km/h so you don’t have to stop traffic if rain suddenly looms. Luggage ca­ pacity has increased by 20 litres to 280 with the top open and by 30 litres to 335 with the top closed.

It borrows standard equipment from the coupé version, including BMW Profes­ sional radio (with iDrive operating sys­ tem), control display with a flat­screen de­ sign and auto aircon with convertible mode.

Optional extras include leather trim with SunReflective technology (reduces surface heating in direct sunshine) and satnav with touch controller.

Driver assistance aids include BMW ConnectedDrive which comprises anti­ dazzle high­beam assistant, adaptive headlights, parking assist with reversing camera, speed limit Info (with ‘No Passing’

Next generation Evoque headed for SA THE new Range Rover Evoque, sporting a new design and a host of the automaker’s latest technologies, will make its debut at the 2015 Geneva auto show.

Land Rover SA says it could be in South Africa by August 2015.

Land Rover design director and chief creative officer Gerry McGovern said: “The Range Rover Evoque first established and then dominated the luxury compact SUV sector generating worldwide acclaim and sales success. Our challenge has been to evolve the Evoque design without diluting its distinctive character.”

ThenewEvoque’strimlevelshavebeen realigned to match those of the Range Rover Sport — SE, HSE Dynamic and Auto­ biography, and a suite of option packs.

The new Evoque gains enlarged air in­ takes, new grille designs and is will be the

first Range Rover to be offered with adapt­ ive LED headlights. The Evoque’s standard grille is distinguished by two bold horizon­ tal bars and a new fine­mesh pattern.

In South Africa, the new SUV will be powered with a 2.2­litre SD4 turbo diesel engine (paired with a nine­speed auto) and Land Rover’s 2.0­litre Si4 turbo petrol.

With 177kW on tap, the Si4 petrol en­ gine delivers strong performance, with ac­ celeration from 0­100km/h in just 7.6 sec­ onds and a top speed of 217km/h. Fuel economy is rated at 7.8 litres/100km and 181g/km emissions.

Interior changes include new seats and door casings, 20cm touch­screen infotain­ ment unit and the introduction of new col­ ours and materials. Its hands­free power tailgate allows owners to automatically open and close the boot by waving a foot

beneath the rear bumper.

It’sequippedwithLandRover’sinnova­ tive All­Terrain Progress Control (ATPC), only available on Si4 derivatives, first seen on the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. The technology maintains a pre­de­ termined speed (selected using the cruise control function) in forward or reverse gears between 1.8km/h to 30km/h, allow­ ing the driver to concentrate on negotiat­ ing tricky terrain.

Its autonomous emergency braking prevents or greatly reduces the severity of crashes in the event of the driver failing to take preventative action. Using an ad­ vanced forward­facing stereo digital cam­ era, the system can identify potential haz­ ards ahead.

RECENT Saturday experienced fantastic weather for cyclists to be out and about.

A bunch of 12 A and B group mountain bikers, met up in Illovo, at 5:15am. They rode out along the ridge route to the cellphone tower and back, managing to clock 40kms.

The few who rode from their homes got an average of 60kms.

Two riders who needed some distance broke away and did the waterfall route, which will be an excellent ride in the future for those training for Sani2c.

The Mambas C group is growing fast as there are quite a lot of newcomers trying out mountain biking

and “old” riders wanting to get in the saddle again.

Then came Saturday afternoon andtheheavensopened.Riderswho had entered the Midmar Notts, looked on in horror as the water poured down roads. But like all cyclists, nothing stops them.

There was intermittent rain for the 40km uphill slog. Fortunately it cleared with dry roads for the last 20kms.

Toti club will be joining forces with Scottburgh for a weekend away up in Karkloof on the weekend of 14 and 15 March.
