FTER a week of often contentious meetings in and around Riverside Park over jobs for locals, the good news is that significant consensus appears to have been reached among those that matter. As Ward 6 Councillor Themba Ngcobo — who has played a key role in achieving that consensus — told the Fever: “All the relevant stake-

holders agree that the wishes of the local community take priority in their area. “What is the purpose of the community electing a ward councillor in his personal capacity, in electing community liasion officers and of having a representative project steering committee if their views are to be ignored in favour of those from another area? “The ANC, of which I am a member, has since its inception in 1912 been the voice of the people.

Whose voices have they been listening to? “Not, it has been shown, to the people of Riverside Park on matters inside Riverside Park.” On Monday 31 March, the Riverside Park community “closed down” work on upgrading their premises because, they alleged, around 40 jobs had been awarded to people from other communities and not to local people. As local spokespeople told the Fever: “Not only is this a breach of

promises and tradition, we also prefer to have our own members working in our homes because we know them and they are accountable to us. “We argue that the interests of the beneficiary community should enjoy priority, not exclusivity, over those of another community. “They now trust that that principle will be paramount in all their dealings with Umdoni Municipality, through their committees and their councillor.”

DURBAN has been encouraged by the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (Sascoc) to state its intention of being involved in the 2022 Commonwealth Games bidding process. At this stage the eThekwini Municipality is only indicating its intention to bid, which has no cost implications. City manager Sibusiso Sithole told members of the Executive Committee on Tuesday, 1 April that bidding for the games would require national and provincialgovernmentsupportandinvolvement. “Thebiddingprocesscomeswithcost implications. Therefore, we will have to look at the financial implications and do our cost analysis. When it comes to hosting such an event we will not be doing it asDurbanalone.Thisisaninternational event and we would expect national government to assist,” he said. Sithole added that if Durban was to win the bid the provincial government would also be involved, as has happened with other high profile events. Bidding formally ends in March 2015 and the announcement regarding the successful bidder will be held in September 2015.
