Multipurpose Building

UCM Multipurpose Building -- Home of the Mules * 2011-12 -- No. 14 in NCAA Division II Home Attendance *

This is the 37th season the Mules have played their home games in the Multipurpose Building. The structure was built for $5.5 million and was paid for entirely by student fees. No state appropriations were used. The first basketball game in the building was played November 27, 1976. The Mules opened their 1976-77 season with a 92-75 win over Midland Lutheran College of Nebraska. The official dedication game came later that season against Southwest Missouri State, with the Mules winning 90-62. Seating capacity in the Multipurpose Building is 8,500 for basketball, making it the largest basketball facility in the MIAA. The two largest Mules’ basketball crowds a ctually have occurred on the same date in subsequent years. On February 16, 1980, a crowd of 7,300 watched the Mules avenge their only regular season loss with a victory over Southwest Missouri. Exactly one year later, on February 16, 1981, 7,000 fans were present to watch the Mules win a crucial MIAA game against Lincoln. In their previous 36 seasons at the Multipurpose Building, the Mules have compiled an o utstanding 439-88 (.833) record. Seven times the men’s NCAA Division II South Central Regional Tournament has been held in the Multi (1980, 1982, 1984, 1985, 1991, 2007 and 2009). The Multipurpose Building also has been the scene of many outstanding moments in Mules’ basketball history. Central Missouri and MIAA career scoring leader Bill Fennelly had his Mules’ single-game record of 54 points in 1980 against Jacksonville State in an NCAA regional tournament game. Starting with the final 17 home games of the 1982-83 season, the Mules compiled a string of 46 consecutive wins in the Multipurpose Building before Southeast Missouri snapped the streak with a 46-40 victory on February 16, 1985. In addition to being the home of Mules and Jennies basketball, indoor track and field, Jennies volleyball and Mules’ wrestling, the building is available for use by the university faculty, staff and students, as well as the general public. Designed primarily for recreational purposes, the building contains, in addition to the main b asketball floor, a six-lane track; a swimming pool; five indoor and two outdoor courts for handball or raquetball; a free-weight and universal weight area; locker rooms and meeting rooms. The main arena can be set up to accommodate four basketball or four volleyball courts at one time. The offices for Central Missouri’s Intercollegiate Athletics staff also are located in the building. Numerous special events are held in the building each year. The Missouri State High School Activities Association held the state volleyball tournament in the Multi 17 straight years until 2008. Games in the state high school basketball tournament also are played here each year. The MIAA Indoor Track and Field Championships were an annual event from 1977 through 2001 and now will be rotated every other year between Warrensburg and Joplin. The building also is used for major concerts and for UCM commencement c eremonies.

Prior to the 2012-13 school year, the Multi was fitted with a brand new center-hung scoreboard and video board system from SignCo. The new scoreboards with stat panels were added to the east and west walls. The arena was also outfitted with a new 30-foot LED scorer’s table. Before the 2008-09 season, the Multi got a huge facelift with new seating. The near $1 million project added seatback chairs to the north end of the arena and new bleachers on the south side. In 2002-03, the Mules made several improvements to their locker and film rooms. A new, expanded locker room was built onto the existing men’s locker facility, complete with carpeting, refurbished lockers and a television/VCR unit. The original locker room also underwent a substantial renovation, and is now the team video complex, player lounge, and study facility. The permanent wood floor was installed in the arena in 1998. The Mules have also enjoyed outstanding fan support in the Multi, as attendance grew from 922 per game in 2001-02 to a national-best 3,640 fans per outing in 2006-07.
