MESSAGES FROM OUR PRESIDENT: Dear Members, I am so excited to be able to return to the Club soon. It has been far too long since we have been able to dine at the Club and I have missed seeing all of you.

Thank you so much for your patience and understanding as we navigated our way through a difficult and unprecedented situation. Over the past few months many of us have been hard at work ensuring you will all be welcomed back to a vibrant, updated, and improved UClub. The Board, Sarah, Chef, and I have all been in constant contact as we navigate when and how to open, putting the right staff in place, and getting the Club prepped and ready for you - our members.

I can’t wait for all of you to see how fresh and clean the Club is; the interior walls have a fresh coat of paint, the wood has

been refinished, and everything has been scrubbed from top to bottom. Additionally, there have been some improvements to the bar area and the library has been reconfigured to better fit members’ needs. The best part is that Sarah was able to accomplish all of this with very little out-of-pocket expenses to the Club.

Expect some fantastic changes as we transition the UClub into its next 100 years. These changes will be both minor and significant. It is my goal to ensure that each member feels a sense of belonging at the Club and that we all have a sense of pride as we walk through the UClub doors. I look forward to seeing you all soon.

MESSAGES FROM OUR GM: Dear Members, First, let me just say that it has been incredibly inspiring to watch your resilience, patience, and creativity through this difficult time. Even as we have been unable to physically gather, our mission remains constant: to create and ensure a beautiful oasis for you, our members, to enjoy together. A place to come together, meet, eat, share, and be inspired every day.

Even as we worked to adapt to the shifting demands and restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic over the past few months, and to find ways to continue to offer you services and support online, the need for in-person human connection remains strong. As the world is slowly starting to open back up, Clubs like ours are carefully considering how to best resume operations. Your safety and ours is at the forefront of our minds in this. Nothing else is 4 THE 1919 MAGAZINE | JUNE 2020

more important.

Taking all of the state, county, and health guidelines, regulations, and stipulations into account, we are now actively working toward a July 6th limited reopening of the Club to members and your guests and we could not be more excited.

We are, as I write this, in the middle of a number of necessary projects that we must complete before we are able to reopen. The bulk of these projects are scheduled for completion on July 3rd.

Some of this work includes the training of staff, as well as putting into place various physical and documentational requirements we need to be in compliance with OSHA/CDC/ SB county of health rules for opening.

Myself and our dedicated admin staff are working daily to get operations up and ready, and I cannot wait to open our doors to you, our dear members, on July 6th for regular, daily meal services. See pages 6-7 for our

full UClub Reopening Plan and the necessary regulations for everyone using and visiting the Club. Please note that due to space restrictions in connection with the current reopening regulations we do ask that you please make reservations for meals.

You can do this, and find all of the latest information about our reopening schedule and more on our brand new UClub website. You can find it in the new Member’s Area. You should have received an email with your login credentials and instructions for using the new site. If you did not, please let Ammanjah know right away at memberservices@uclubsb.org.

Moving forward the website will be our main means of communication with you, including Club updates and news, daily menus, meal and event reservations, online bill pay, and more. Please do take a moment to get yourself logged in and familiar with the new site, and please do not hesitate to reach out to Ammanjah for

any and all website assistance at any time.

I am so pleased that we were also able to use this time to paint, refurbish, and attend to some much-needed maintenance at the Club, among all of the other things listed above. I cannot wait for you all to enjoy our beautiful Club again.

We can’t predict when this global pandemic will pass, or what the next few months might bring exactly, but we take comfort for now in knowing that we will very soon be able to come together at the Club.

Together, we will move through this turbulent time to see our Club thrive and grow better than ever, and to create ever more lasting memories and cherished moments.

THE UCLUB WELCOME BACK UCLUB As you know from our recent emails to you all, we are actively getting ready to open for business again! Starting July 6th we will be open for Lunch Mondays-Fridays, from 11:30am-2:00pm. We look forward to seeing you all here to enjoy Chef’s exquisite new lunch menu, served out on our very own idyllic and private Sola Patio.

TENTATIVE UCLUB PLAN OF OPENING* Phases I - July 6 • Lunch service resumes, M-F 11:30am-2:00pm • All rooms available for meetings; No food service in rooms • Continuing To-Go Service Phases II - July 20 • Bar opens again for Bar Bites & new Plat Du Jour, Tuesdays-Thursdays • Bistro Fridays resume Phase III - August 1 • Food service in rooms resumes • Club house activities are reinstated; limited to 50 people with all distancing measures adhered to Phase IV - September 1 • +50 large events resume *plan subject to change dependent on State and County mandates

REOPENS! MEMBERS & YOUR GUESTS! In order to adhere to all OSHA, CDC, and County directives, and to help ensure your wellbeing and the wellbeing of our staff, we do need to have a few measures in place for the time being for all members and guests:

UCLUB REOPENING RULES: 1. Please make reservations. Due to limits on the number of people allowed by current regulations to dine-in at a time, there may be a wait period for walk-ins to be seated. (To reserve a table log in to the Members Area of our website. See pages 8-9 for more information.)

2. We ask that you & your guests please check in at the new concierges desk (located just inside the Club parking lot/bar side entrance) upon your arrival.

3. We ask that you & your guests please wear a mask at all times when not seated at your tables and keep 6 feet distance with other patrons not at your table.

4. Needless to say, please refrain from coming to the Club if you are experiencing any illness or possible symptoms of Covid-19.

5. All of our staff will wear masks and all staff are trained on the procedures outlined in our Covid-19 reopening plan, based on OSHA, CDC, and County Health directives.

6. There will be hand sanitizing stations available throughout the Club.

We know and trust that you will all join us in doing your part to help ensure that every one of you is able to come back to the Club safely and securely. Each of our situations and underlying health considerations are different, but together we can make the Club a safe haven for all of you to get out and dine and relax in these uncanny times.

• We are very excited that our new UClub website is LIVE! • The web address (url) for our website has not changed. You can still find it at: www.uclubsb.org. The site has, however, been completely revamped to better reflect who we are, and to give you –our Members– quicker and easier access to information and services.

MEMBERS SUPPORT THE CLUB: The past months have been nothing short of unprecedented and have truly challenged us in ways we never could have imagined. Here at the UClub we are grateful for our generous and caring membership. So many of you have already contributed to the UClub Pledge Drive. As you all know, our Club still cannot rely on our usual sources of income the weddings and private events which normally pay the lion’s share of our bills. It will be quite some time yet until these types of large events are allowed again and back at their full capacities. In the interim, we have implemented many difficult cuts, applied for and accepted a PPP loan, and taken other measures. In addition, many of you have stepped up as well to help see us through these difficult times. Together, we can weather this storm and even come out stronger. Thank you for the integral part you all play, for your dedication to the UClub family, and to ensuring our wonderful oasis in the heart of downtown remains a Santa Barbara staple for another 100 years (at least!), for your families and ours.

Cooking with Chef David LOBSTER BOIL

INGREDIENTS: 2 WHOLE LOBSTERS 4 EACH LITTLE NECK CLAMS CLEANED 6 EACH BLACK LOCAL MUSSELS CLEANED 4 EACH SHRIMP CLEANED DE-VEINED 2 EARS CORN SHUCKED CUT IN 3 2 EA YUKON POTATOES CUT IN 4 2 ONIONS CUT IN 4 2 EA CARROTS CUT IN 6 8 CLOVES GARLIC PEELED 2 CUPS DRY WHITE WINE 2 EA BAY LEAF 4 SPRIGS THYME CHOPPED

DIRECTIONS:

4 SPRIGS ITALIAN PARSLEY CHOPPED

• In a heavy bottom 12 qt pot reduce the wine, herbs, spices, onions, carrots, and lemon by half.

1 TABLESPOON OLD BAY

• Add the potatoes, cover with water and place lid on top and cook for 20 minutes almost until tender.

1 TEASPOON GROUND CORIANDER 1 TEASPOON CAYENNE PEPPER 2 TEASPOON PAPRIKA 1 LEMON SLICED

• Add shellfish, then corn, cover with water, cook for another 11 minutes.

• Drain water, enjoy. Best to be eaten outside with a nice dry Rose or Sauvignon Blanc.
