Choose from over 1,000 courses and 100+ programs to help you advance your career or pursue a passion. We offer in-person and fully online courses and certificates to make learning easier and more convenient. Explore the possibilities at UCLA Extension this winter.

POSSIBILITIES Our outlook for the new year is genuinely optimistic as we consider the possibilities for the future. Martin Venezky, the cover artist for this winter catalog, took his design inspiration from the idea of the “possibilities in one’s grasp” as his depiction of windows and walls seeks an emotional response to this proposition. The UCLA Extension connection is linked to how education “opens possibilities” for transformation and renewal. Read the artist’s statement on page 28. Our flexible open enrollment model translates into access to a variety of interdisciplinary and innovative programming options and the opportunity to enroll in courses quarterly without the financial burden of paying for all courses in a certificate up front. In other words, we create powerful possibilities for you to grow and learn at your own pace. We have applied this flexible model in realizing a key strategic priority to build community alliances that support greater access, equity, diversity, and inclusion. On this front, allow me to share some good news by highlighting two grant awards we received in service to our communities. UCLA Extension has received a $2.9 million grant from the State of California under the California State Budget Act 2019 to launch UCLAxCareerBridge. Under UCLAxCareerBridge, adults from diverse and underserved communities are enrolled and supported in professional certificates in Alcohol and Drug Abuse Counseling, Data Science, and Early Childhood Education – Associate Teacher. Our partner organizations include: Child360, Loyola Immigrant Justice Clinic (LIJC), PUENTE Learning Center, South Bay Workforce Investment Board (SBWIB), United American Indian Involvement, Inc. (UAII) and Vermont Slauson Economic Development Corporation (VSEDC), among other community nonprofit groups. The good news continues with the recent announcement of a $1.5 million grant from the Health Resources & Services Administration (HRSA) to develop and offer a Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) Program. The program is designed for paraprofessionals who serve the LGBTQ+ population in Los Angeles. This new certificate offers evidence-based behavioral health training and includes didactic, observation, experiential, and capstone components. Our community partners, Being Alive, CRI-Help, Inc., Los Angeles LGBT Center, and United American Indian Involvement, Inc. (UAII), are very supportive of the program. Both grants subsidize fees, books and supplies, and materials for students. These programs fuel our vision for what is possible and will increase access for Angelenos across the region to world-class education and training opportunities at UCLA. Funding from these grants will allow us to extend UCLA’s reach beyond the borders of Westwood, removing barriers such as transportation and support services, by taking our programs to those communities and individuals who lack direct access to higher education. Our primary goal in delivering these programs is to create equitable and sustainable pathways to education and training programs that result in economic and social prosperity for all. It should come as no surprise that we are passionate about our role as a resource for our greater community, local to global. These grant awards add greater dimension to our public service mission—to use the transformative power of education to make a lasting contribution toward a better future. May the new year bring you similar inspiration and renewed purpose about all possibilities. Sincerely,

Eric A. Bullard, PhD Dean, Continuing Education and UCLA Extension

Equity, Diversity & Inclusion Building Equity For All At UCLA Extension, one of our key strategic priorities is to provide access, equity, and inclusion in all of our offerings. Our academic programs empower people to build better futures for themselves and their communities. This is a mission we do not take lightly, knowing that the impact will positively transform the demographic makeup of the fields and industries in which our students work. For this reason, last year we established the Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion (EDI) Committee, a body that consists of representatives from UCLA Extension students, instructors, and staff. The committee’s charge is to foster and guide the development of a more inclusive and equity-based culture at UCLA Extension that continues to support and strengthen diverse backgrounds, identities, and points of view. The next step for the institution is moving forward with hiring a permanent position for Director of Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion, to ensure this important work continues on. Learn more about our efforts at uclaextension.edu/equity-diversity-inclusion. We welcome any questions or suggestions at edicommittee@uclaextension.edu.

Artist Statement “As for themes, my thoughts were primarily about walls and windows that were separating us beginning to open back up to let the colorful noise and excitement back into our lives ... also a theme for education which does the same thing ... opening up possibilities that we may have seen from afar are now within our grasp. We can walk into the picture that we were only watching on a screen.”
