A Message from the Dean
A VISION TOGETHER
As we enter the third year of the global pandemic, I, like many of you, find myself reflecting on what the future holds. For two years, we have navigated uncertainty through “just-in-time” responses, forced to react to the moment while simultaneously attempting to remain hopeful that we will once again return to seeing friends and loved ones regularly, explore new places, connect with new people, attend our favorite events, and be the social homo sapiens that we have evolved to become over the past several millennia. Social connectedness and cooperation are the main ingredients for our species to survive and thrive. Though biased, I would argue that another crucial ingredient is education. Learning new skills, acquiring new knowledge, and challenging oneself have led to great outcomes throughout human history—cures, vaccines, and advanced medical care all come immediately to mind as we live through the current moment in our collective history.
Our academic team has been hard at work thinking about the future, pondering what skills and knowledge will be needed to not only survive but thrive in a post-pandemic world. During a recent academic planning and visioning retreat, we began laying the groundwork for developing new programs with learning experiences designed with our learners at the center. The preview of what is coming in 2022-23 reinforces our priority on creating programs that provide flexibility, quality, service, and support that is expected from UCLA Extension. From international trade and commerce to data science and health sciences, to entertainment and the creative arts, we see ground-breaking innovation and progress.
At UCLA Extension, we have adapted our pedagogies to allow flexibility in taking our courses and programs. In addition to our in-person, remote, and online courses, we have adopted additional teaching modalities to help our students achieve their goals.
Coming Together This spring, I invite you to join us in a class, at an event, or in one of our no-cost seminars offered via UCLAxOpen. We are excited to serve as a regional catalyst for change but equally excited to connect people, thoughts, and ideas. Together, we are stronger. Together, we are better. Together, we can solve the region’s and the world’s most challenging problems. Together, there is nothing that we cannot collectively accomplish.
Welcome to Spring Quarter 2022!
Sincerely,
Eric A. Bullard, PhD Dean, Continuing Education and UCLA Extension
