In2science/TeachFirst program in2scienceUK is an award winning charity which empowers students from disadvantaged backgrounds to achieve their potential and progress to STEM and research careers through high quality work placements and careers guidance, to which the CNIE offers yearly placements. “ Before undergoing this experience I truly believed that engineering was an industry filled with males. It also showed me how there are many different pathways to reach the end goal – many of the scientists I spoke to didn’t have a degree in chemical engineering, but in different fields such as chemistry, computer science, physics and many more. This experience was very inspiring and led me to finalise my choice to pursue a career in science and it was truly unforgettable. I am very grateful for the opportunity I had.”

Over the years, CNIE has given numerous invited presentations, including plenaries at key events nationally (e.g., ChemEngDayUK, 1st UK Catalysis Conference IET “Future of Engineering” Festival) and internationally (e.g., PARTEC in Germany, Bioinspired Materials Conference, “SMILE” in France, ChemReactor in the Netherlands). CNIE PDRAs and PhD students have won hotly contested Awards for best talks and posters, including four ChemEngDayUK conferences in a row (2014, 2015, 2016, 2017). At the ChemEngDayUK 2017 Awards Ceremony, UCL Chemical Engineering and CNIE won more than half of all prizes on offer, scooping seven awards in total.
CNIE’s Prof Mark Miodownik is a multi-award winning broadcaster and writer and regularly presents BBC tv programmes on engineering. In June 2017, Professor Mark Miodownik presented at the Cheltenham Science Festival to over 25,000 visitors and was also invited invited to speak at the IET Engineering Festival which welcomed over 600 current and future engineers.
