Defense Notes • Most times facing opponents going for it on fourth down in 2012: School Attempts Faced Conversion % 1) San Diego State 34 50.0 T2) UCF 31 38.7 T2) Stanford 31 51.6 • Those 31 attempts are the most by UCF opponents in the FBS era (since 1996).

THE INT DUO • Senior defensive backs Kemal Ishmael and A.J. Bouye each have three interceptions this year. • The last time the Knights had at least two players with three interceptions or more was in 2008 (Sha’reff Rashad at five, Johnell Neal at four and Joe Burnett at four). THE FRESHMEN UP FRONT • Deion Green (2.0 at Marshall) and Thomas Niles (2.0 vs. Missouri) both have two sacks in a game this year, and they are the first UCF freshmen since Bruce Miller in 2007 (2.0 vs. Tulsa Oct. 20) to post at least two sacks in a game. • Green went on to be voted to the C-USA All-Freshman Team this year. He has 4.0 sacks, which ranks second on the team behind only Troy Davis with 6.5. The last UCF freshman to have 4.0 sacks or more in a single-season was Miller when he had 7.0 during that 2007 campaign. Miller is now the starting fullback for the San Francisco 49ers.

GET THE BALL! • UCF forced three fumbles at UTEP (two by E.J. Dunston, one by Clayton Geathers), which were the most since causing three vs. Tulane Nov. 21, 2009. It then forced two more at Tulsa Nov. 17. • The last time the Knights forced at least two fumbles in back-to-back games was two apiece vs. Buffalo and Kansas State Sept. 18-25, 2010. • Most fumble recoveries in the FBS era (since 1996): Season Fumbles Recoveries 1) 2009 31 16 T2) 2012 25 15 T2) 2001 31 15 FIRST-QUARTER BRILLIANCE • The UCF defense has surrendered just 51 points in the first quarter. That includes holding six teams scoreless in the opening 15 minutes. TOP 10 MAYBE ON THE HORIZON • Senior defensive end and All-C-USA First Team member Troy Davis torched SMU’s offensive line with two sacks and a forced fumble Nov. 3. That gave him a personal-best 6.5 sacks this year, while he now has 17.0 sacks in his career. • A look at UCF’s career sacks chart: Player Sacks Seasons 1) Bruce Miller 35.5 2007-10 2) Darrell Rudd 31.5 1981-84 3) Greg Jefferson 31 1991-94 4) Elton Patterson 30.5 1999-02 5) Jermaine Benoit 28.5 1993-97 6) Michael O’Shaughnessy 22 1979-80 Bobby Spitulski 22 1988-91 8) Emil Ekiyor 20.5 1992-95 9) Keenan Wimbley 19 1984-87 10) Dave Nelson 18.5 1990-93 --- Troy Davis 17 2009-12 • Davis has a career-high 66 tackles overall this year, as well as 9.0 tackles for loss.

• Conversely, the Knights’ offense has collected 85 points in the first quarter. PRESSURE WAS KEY VS. CATO • Knowing Marshall quarterback and the nation’s leading passer Rakeem Cato was going to test the UCF defense, the Knights needed help from their defensive line to limit Cato’s damage, especially since UCF did not have a sack in the previous two games. • Cato, who would eventually be voted as the CUSA Most Valuable Player for 2012, would post 35for-62 numbers vs. UCF but had just 298 yards for a 4.8-yards-per-attempt average in UCF’s 54-17 win. It was his third-lowest output in terms of yards this season. • UCF broke out with four sacks, its second-highest total of the season (five vs. Missouri).

DE Troy Davis • Although several schools’ statisticians do not keep track of quarterback hurries in games, Marshall did, and the end result was UCF had 10 hurries compared to Marshall’s one. Troy Davis boasted five of those pressures, and added half a sack. ISHMAEL’S GREAT ENDINGS FOR THE DEFENSE • Kemal Ishmael now has two of the best defensive plays to end a game in school history. • Along with his double-overtime interception vs. Southern Miss, he had the break-up on Georgia’s Hail Mary pass to clinch the 10-6 victory in the 2010 AutoZone Liberty Bowl. AN INTERCEPTION TO END THE GAME • Before the victory over Southern Miss, the last time UCF won with an interception on the final play of the game was in 2007. • In the 2007 opener at NC State with the Wolfpack trailing 25-23, they had the ball on its own 46 with 4.5 seconds left. However, Joe Burnett intercepted Harrison Beck’s desperation pass, prompting a huge celebration by the Knights.

C-USA DEFENSIVE RANKINGS CHART • It would not be a normal year in C-USA if UCF did not rank at or near the top of the league in defense. • Where UCF’s defense has ranked in C-USA in the Bright House Networks Stadium-era.
