What’s aOn Guidea Issue 1: Freshers’ Week and beyond…
So, what’s on? Hey guys, Welcome to the first edition of the Students’ Union What’s On Guide, the definitive guide to what’s going on in Belfield. This colourful little book will help you fill those annoying hours-long breaks in between lectures, those blustery autumn evenings when it’s better to remain on campus than venture home, but most importantly it will help you fill any sort of fun, involved, UCD-shaped hole in your heart. Whether you’re looking for a list of upcoming bands playing in the Student Bar, or upcoming college soccer and rugby fixtures, look no further – the Students’ Union has helpfully combined them all here to make life that little bit easier for you. The next edition will be out in October; if you have anything you want included in it, just email firstname.lastname@example.org. Remember – you’re here for a good time, not a long time! Your chance to get involved with UCD life! From 14-18 September, the Student Centre car park will host a large white tent; a tent that is in fact not a leftover First Aid Station from the UCD Ball, but a temporary home to all of UCD’s student societies. All summer long, the committees of UCD’s societies have been working hard preparing for the year ahead, filling their bags with endless freebies to coax you to join their ranks. Work the tent, see what you’re interested in, and sign up to whatever society takes your fancy. The price for getting involved is only €2, and it could open up a whole other world for you. Check out the Freshers’ Week posters lining noticeboards up and down the campus for details of the various events taking place. Pop along to one, mingle with the society’s committee, make a few new friends – who knows where’ll you end up?
SU Events Here’s what the SU has in store for you over the coming weeks: Friday 25 September – World Contraceptive Day – This Friday will be like no other in Belfield. Watch out for an invasion of giant sperm, who’ll be roaming around campus handing out free condoms and free advice on safe sex. Tuesday 29 September – Pink Day – This day will raise awareness of women’s health issues, in particular breast and cervical cancer. On the day, there’ll be a coffee morning, a pink balloon launch, and activities in the Student Club, along with a niteclub event. The Marie Keating Foundation will have a mobile health unit on campus, informing students about breast cancer and how to check for it. On top of this, the Welfare Crew will be fundraising all day long! If you want to get involved, email the Women’s Officer, Jacqueline Brennan, at email@example.com. MABS Weekly Clinics – Starting October – The Money Advice and Budgetary Service, in conjunction with the SU, will hold weekly clinics on campus to assist you with budgeting and offer help with financial worries. You’ll get a free Budget Book to help keep track of your finances, and all consultations are strictly confidential. Finalised details will be made available at www.ucdsu.ie. ‘How To’ Talks – Starting October – These talks will give you advice on how to help friends who are having difficulties in college on a range of issues such as settling in, financial worries, academic worries and depression. They will be hosted by the SU in conjunction with UCD’s Student Counselling Service. For finalised details, see www.ucdsu.ie. STI Screening Service – Starting October – Working with a GP clinic in Donnybrook, the SU offers a heavily subsidised STI screening service. For a price of only €40, you can get screened for all major sexually transmitted infections, at a confidential location on campus. Call the SU on (01) 716 3108 for more information.
