WHAT YOUR GIFT MEANS
UCD Champions — Changing Futures Impact Report
The amazing impact of your gift to the UCD Champions - Changing Futures campaign. Welcome On behalf of the 74 UCD students whose lives you changed this year, thank you for being a UCD Champion. You have given these deserving students the chance to take up a place at our University and impacted their futures forever. Many young people with exceptional potential mistakenly believe that they don’t belong at university because they can’t afford it. With the help of generous supporters like you, we are challenging this perception. A turbulent global economy has created increased competition for third level places and ultimately for jobs. We now have an entire generation whose future prospects will be influenced more than ever by whether or not they have a university education. This is why we believe it’s crucial to ensure that every applicant with talent and ability gets the opportunity to attend UCD, regardless of their means. Your generosity is helping to make this vision a reality. Together, we can cement UCD’s position as Ireland’s most diverse and inclusive university. Within the pages of this booklet, you can discover how your money was spent and read about the impact your gift has made with firsthand accounts from scholarship recipients.
Because of people like you, who understand just how important a good start in life can be, the UCD Champions - Changing Futures campaign is making a real and lasting difference. With your help, UCD Foundation has funded 128 scholarships since launching the campaign, 74 of them in the current academic year. These scholarships are awarded based on merit and need, and they give deserving students the power to take control of their own destinies. They gain confidence – the realisation that somebody they have never met believes in their potential is incredibly powerful. It is one of the reasons why scholarship recipients tend to outperform their peers across all disciplines. Your generosity is incredible. This report is a tribute to your support but more importantly, a thank you to all of our Champions who have contributed to the UCD Champions – Changing Futures Campaign. Thank you so much.
Mark McDonnell Manager, UCD Champions - Changing Futures
Changing futures by Supporting Education for All In 2015, UCD Champions helped fund 74 Scholars. Access Centre Scholarships Access Scholarships are awarded to students from disadvantaged or challenging backgrounds. Thanks to Champions like you, we were able to award 50 such scholarships to students starting in the academic year 2015/2016. Without these scholarships, they would have been unable to take part fully in university life – some would not have been able to take up their places at all.
Reunion Classes Give Back BComm, Diamond and Golden Reunion Class Gifts Reunion classes generated more than €100,000 last year through Class Gift Challenges, to fund 15 scholars. We would like to thank the Golden and Diamond classes, as well as the BComm classes of 1958, 1959, 1960, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1983 and 1989. We would like to sincerely thank the graduates of the reunion classes for their extremely generous support. Because of their kindness, many more students will be able to follow in their footsteps at UCD.
That’s where you came in. Your generosity levelled the playing field and gave them the opportunity to pursue their dreams at UCD. As well as much needed financial backing, these students receive other forms of support, including peer mentoring and academic assistance when it is needed. Now they can realise the talent they possess, earn their degrees and, in the future, go on to fulfill their career aspirations. You have given them a remarkable gift and we thank you for your support. The new UCD Champions Access Scholars at their awards ceremony in November
Meet some of the students you helped support Eoin (Law) “Coming from a disadvantaged rural background in the West I had always longed to go to UCD. My father passed away 2 years ago and my mother is a carer to my little brother who has severe autism. Your help has allowed me to follow my dream. I want to use my degree to help improve support for everyone suffering from a learning disability. I cannot describe the level of gratitude I feel for the donors who supported my degree. Thank you.”
Thomas (Business) “I’d like to thank those graduates who funded my scholarship, without it I would never have had the opportunity to come to UCD. I am the first in my family to attend third level and already my little brother wants to follow me and come to UCD. None of this would be possible without your support. Thank you.”
Aoife (Medicine) “I had always wanted to study medicine, ever since I saw the great work the doctors did in treating my cancer. Helping people gives me a purpose in this world. I would never have been able to afford to come to college without your help and I am truly grateful.”
Eileen (Engineering) “I always dreamed of coming to college but thought it was out of my reach financially. This scholarship means the world to me; without it, I would not be where I am now. I had always felt constrained by my personal circumstances, but you have helped set me on the path to becoming a civil engineer, a job I previously could only have dreamed of. All I want to say is thank you.”
Saoirse (Arts) “Receiving my Leaving Cert points was bittersweet. My hard work had paid off and I had gotten enough points to study Arts. I was delighted, but I knew we didn’t have enough money to cover day-to-day expenses, let alone the costs of sending me to university. Without your help, I would never have set foot in UCD – thank you so much for this chance, I won’t let you down!”
Excellence underpins everything we do at UCD. Those who contributed to Ad Astra Scholarships allow us to promote and foster the exceptional talent that exists within our student body. Thank you for giving these young people the chance to develop their amazing potential. Through Ad Astra Academy Scholarships, UCD recognises exceptional students when they join, as well as those who develop their talents while studying at the University.
Nora Nora, an Ad Astra Academic Scholar studying medicine, pursued two volunteer opportunities in India, one at an HIV/AIDS Centre in Hyderabad and the other at an orphanage in Kerala. An Ad Astra Academy bursary covered the cost of the flight, accommodation and travel vaccines.
“Volunteering in the HIV/ AIDS centre allowed me to see interesting medical cases that many young doctors rarely see.”

Why I became a UCD Champion
“I was the first in my family to go to university and I saw how education impacted not just me but my brothers and sisters too. I was happy to pass that opportunity on to new students” Sean Meehan (BAgrSc 2008)
Without supporters like you, our scholarship recipients would not have been able to attend UCD. We asked some of our donors why they chose to donate to the UCD Champions - Changing Futures campaign. Here’s what they said...
“Working as a guidance counsellor has allowed me to see the confidence and selfesteem a third level degree can bring” Mrs Helen Ó Colmáin (BA 1956)
“I have seen the impact of scholarships first hand and what a huge difference it makes to the students and their families, it really is life changing”
“A lack of education can really inhibit a person’s life. So I wanted to contribute to this campaign, as education really is essential to anyone’s life.”
“I am a retired principal so I have seen firsthand how some children don’t get a fair chance. Education is a way out of poverty and I believe all should have that opportunity”
Mrs Carol Oppermann (BA 1987)
Catrionia McCarthy (BA 1982)
Mrs Margaret O’Shaughnessy (BA 1970, HDipEd 1971)
Meet the student caller team Eoin, Hugh, Aoife, Kerrie and Conor, members of the 50 strong student caller team, arrive to work at our office on campus.
Last year alone our student caller team spoke with almost 5,000 UCD graduates to update them on developments at the University since they graduated, to ask them for feedback on their time at UCD and to share with them the value and impact of making a donation to our scholarship appeal.
Every year we receive positive feedback from graduates as a result of these calls, and we hope that you will enjoy speaking to current UCD students as much as they enjoy chatting with you. Our team of callers find it hugely beneficial to gain an insight into the careers that alumni have pursued, and are keen to share their own experiences of student life here at UCD.
Our student callers have a fantastic time sharing their memories with those who attended UCD before them
“Working as a student caller gives me the opportunity to speak to so many interesting UCD graduates. I have particularly enjoyed talking to people who have graduated from the same course as me. It’s great to hear about how their time in UCD stood to them in the working world after graduation and to hear about some of the different options open to graduates. Another thing I really love about this job is how varied it is. One moment I can be discussing Joyce the next I can be talking to a graduate about the dances held in the Earlsfort Terrace days.
The Evolution Garden We would like to thank the supporters who contributed towards UCD Campus Development. These gifts are helping to fund the UCD Evolution Garden, which will be on show at this year’s Bloom Festival, 2nd – 6th of June, before being relocated to the UCD campus, where it will become a permanent outreach and teaching resource. Artist’s interpretation
This educational attraction will tell the story of plant evolution showing that plants are not only complex beautiful organisms in their own right, but are essential in the survival of all life on the planet.
It will also be used in our annual Plant Biology workshop where we invite secondary school children to UCD to see our research facilities.
When relocated to the UCD campus it will be used as an outdoor classroom to teach plant evolution to UCD students from science, agriculture and landscape architecture.
Be sure to look out for the garden if you are on campus later this year, it will be located in the courtyard of the O’Brien Centre for Science.

Leave a Legacy Gift We hope that your life has been enriched by all your experiences at UCD; a planned legacy gift is a wonderful way of commemorating all that your University means to you. Leaving a gift in your Will extends your charitable giving beyond your lifetime, and all gifts, big and small, are very important to UCD. You can direct your gift towards whatever is closest to your heart, for example, a particular school, college or area of research. You may want to establish a scholarship to benefit the next generation of students or simply give a gift that will help the University continue to grow and develop.
Please consider honouring your own happy memories of UCD and making a real difference to its future with a legacy gift. If you would like to speak to someone in confidence about leaving a gift in your Will, simply contact Mark McDonnell on (+353) 1 716 1286 or email email@example.com Alternatively please fill out the below and return it in the freepost envelope.

Giving Back Even More - It Won’t Cost You a Cent Your generosity has already made such a difference. You can, however, make an even bigger impact and it will not cost you a cent more. Did you know that if you donate over €250, that gift has the potential to be worth an extra 44.9% to the UCD Foundation? All you need to do is to fill out a short tax form. If all of our generous supporters who donated over €250 did this, we would receive an additional €330,000, which would fund 55 scholarships for students on the waiting list.
Tax efficient giving in the Republic of Ireland: Both PAYE and self-assessed supporters can now avail of the scheme. If you would like to participate, we’ll post you out a CHY3 tax form, which you then fill out and return to us. We can then apply to the Revenue for tax relief on your donations over €250.
44.9% in ROI
Once you sign it, the new enduring tax relief form will last for five years.
Tax back in the UK For every £1 donated by a UK taxpayer, we can claim an extra 25p back from HMRC.
25% in UK
You just need to complete a Gift Aid declaration form. The form only needs to be filled out once and covers you for life. There is no minimum amount you need to donate; the only requirement is that you are a UK tax payer.
If you would like to receive a CHY3 form or a Gift Aid Declaration form, please contact Patrick Clarke on (+353) 1 716 1478 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
You can also get the CHY3 form online at: www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/forms/chy3cert-charity.pdf and post it back to us in the freepost envelope
UCD Affinity Credit Card We would like to recognise the fantastic support UCD has received this year from our AIB and Bank of Ireland Affinity credit card holders. Our scholarship programmes, as well as the UCD Sports Development Fund, benefit every time someone uses their Affinity card. Our Affinity cardholders are undeniably UCD Champions, and they are changing futures with their support. Taking out an Affinity credit card is a great way to give back even more to UCD, as well as a nice reminder of all the good times you had at your University. To apply for a UCD Affinity credit card, you can contact Bank of Ireland on 1890 365 100 or find out more at www.ucdfoundation.ie/ways-to-give.
