The university has recognized the Patwin people by including an arboretum garden in their honor, but we would like you, as a student, to be aware of the history of this land. Director, Strategic Native American Retention Initiative and Native American Academic Student Success Center Pomo Pinoleville Greetings. First and foremost, I would like to honor and acknowledge the Patwin people whose traditional lands UC Davis resides on. I would also like to honor the spirit of the Tecumseh Center, which served as the meeting place for the Native American community for many years and held a place for our art, our dialogue and our vision to create a new space for the next generation and those who will follow. As director of the Strategic Native American Retention Initiative and new Native American Academic Student Success Center, it gives me great pleasure to welcome new, prospective and continuing Native American students to UC Davis. The initiative is a multifaceted academic success program focused on increasing the retention, persistence, matriculation and graduation rates of Native American students, in a culturally appropriate way. Our theme is “building connection and strengthening community,” and programming is focused on academic success and resiliency.

This resource guide’s purpose is to engage and empower you—and all of our community—to navigate resources available for our native students on campus. Through this guide, you will be introduced to resources, facilities and programming that we hope will affirm your identity as a Native American scholar and enhance your academic success. An example of this is our student organizations, such as the American Indian Science and Engineering Society and Native American Student Union, and the student-initiated programs, such as American Indian Recruitment and Retention Center and Culture Days and Powwow Committee. Our community includes students, staff, faculty and alumni from a wide variety of tribal backgrounds, experiences and academic interests, along with the Native American Studies department and allies from various departments and centers throughout the campus. I hope the Native American Academic Student Success Center will become your home away from home and connect you to the various resources on campus. Native American Studies Ph.D. Student Paiute and Shoshone How uu! (hello) I am an enrolled member of the Susanville Indian Rancheria, and I am a graduate student in the Native American Studies Ph.D. Program. As a California Native woman, I strive to stay connected to my community and my family. I work to be accountable and responsive to the needs of our people. Within Native American communities, it is hard to return home because there is a lack of opportunities for young, educated adults. Today, more than ever, we must give back to our communities to assist in positive community development. Through commitment to our communities and education, we can complete and apply our degrees successfully. You must remember that in becoming a student at UC Davis, you become a leader and role model in your community. While working on my undergraduate degree, I was fortunate to have found a mentor who assisted me in developing as a scholar, community member and as a Native American woman. It is of the utmost importance that we create support networks and find mentors who encourage our success and

confidence. We, as Native people, experience daily occurrences that push us aside and silence our voices. As students, we should work to make our voices heard. It is crucial to our academic success that we make the most out of our educational experience. This can be through community involvement, creating culturally relevant activities, identity development and commitment to academics. Today, we must be educated and accountable to our communities; our people and our communities depend on our educational success. We need young leaders to write our histories, document our languages, practice traditional medicines and reclaim our lands. These aspects of cultural continuance are important to our sovereignty. At UC Davis, you are taking steps to exercise your individual sovereignty. I welcome you to our community of Native American leaders, scholars and community members here at UC Davis. Indigenous Day of Resistance

On what is usually known as Columbus Day, the Indigenous Day of Resistance is now held to acknowledge over 500 years of Native and Indigenous peoples’ resistance to oppression throughout the Americas. On this day, students and faculty of the Student Recruitment and

Retention Center (SRRC) and the Cross Cultural Center (CCC) hold a day of collective educational action in the Student Community Center (SCC).

Community Feast American Indian Recruitment and Retention (AIRR) hosts this annual event to acknowledge the reality of the history of Thanksgiving and what this holiday represents for Native peoples. This community dinner is a chance for faculty, students and community members to come together to celebrate each other and the resilience of Native American people.

Native Leadership Retreat

Hosted by the Cross Cultural Center, the UC Davis Powwow represents the single largest gathering of Native people at UC Davis, attracting more than 1,000 dancers, vendors and spectators for contests and celebration.

You can get involved in Powwow by joining UC Davis’ Powwow Planning Committee. The UC Davis Powwow Planning Committee is composed of Native American students, alumni, staff and allies. The committee works collaboratively with the Cross Cultural Center to collectively plan and coordinate the annual UC Davis Powwow that takes place in spring quarter. Committee members work diligently throughout the year to provide Native American youth, families and community members a place to gather, dance, sing and celebrate cultural traditions and practices.

As a first-generation college student what advice do you have for incoming students?

Don’t panic. I know that it can be extremely stressful coming in. I worried for a really long time about not having a guide or direction on where to go, but I learned that the people here want you to succeed. If you are ever in need of any sort of help, there are so many resources at your disposal that can help to alleviate the stresses and worries that you may have coming in as a first-year student. Don’t panic and don’t stress. Know that there are people here who are willing to take time out of their day to help you, and make sure that you succeed.

How have you been involved on campus?

I work as the peer advising coordinator for the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP). With my job, I help students with academic guidance, student advocacy, and social and personal support. It’s really important for students to be involved because Davis is so big. There’s so much always going on that it can be easy to get lost in all the schoolwork and everything you have to do. My first sense of community was with EOP. Being involved with EOP, and in the Special Transitional Enrichment Program program, helped me find my community on campus. It’s important to have that place where you can relax, where you know people—a place where you feel comfortable.

Why is it important to get involved on campus?

My freshman year I wasn’t involved at all, and I felt really out of place. I had a terrible freshman year, but during my spring quarter, I volunteered for the Native Youth Empowerment Conference. I realized that I needed to get more involved. Once I put myself out there, I was able to find a home on campus. I got more involved with American Indian Recruitment and Retention, NASU and AISES. I get a lot of support from my co-workers and fellow club members; I feel like I have a family here.

How have you balanced your academics with the social aspects of college?

Realizing that you don’t have to go to every social event is something that really helped me. You don’t have to say yes to everything, and you don’t have to be a part of everything to get the whole college experience. You can miss out on a few things, and you’ll be fine. It can be really difficult to do that, but I do think it is important. On the other hand, it’s important not to spend all your time studying. In college you have a lot of free time that you’re not going to have when you leave. College is cool because you don’t have to work eight hours a day. So make sure you go to social events, but learn the balance. 7

American Indian Science and Engineering Society

Native American Student Union

The American Indian Science and Engineering Society (AISES) seeks to substantially increase the representation of American Indians and Alaskan Natives in engineering, science and other technology-related disciplines. The UC Davis chapter fosters community among Native students in the science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) fields. UC Davis AISES members organize and participate in a variety of events both on campus and nationally, including the annual national AISES conference, the Region 2 conference on the West Coast or Hawaii and the annual national leadership conference. Conferences provide excellent opportunities to meet other Native students in the sciences and engineering, learn about a variety of topics and secure internships and permanent jobs.

The Native American Student Union (NASU) is a holistic and academic support group for Indigenous students on campus. As a student-run organization, NASU is dedicated to promoting cultural and political awareness among all communities and increasing recruitment and retention of Native students. Through involvement with the campus and outside community, NASU strives to build an environment that fosters strong student leadership and empowers Native identity. NASU advocates for the sovereignty and self-determination of all Indigenous peoples throughout the Americas and the world.

Students Advancing Chicanos and Native Americans in Science (SACNAS) is a society of scientists dedicated to fostering the success of Hispanic/ Chicano and Native American scientists. From college students to professionals, SACNAS assists its members with attaining advanced degrees and positions of leadership in science. The Native American Academic Student Success Center (NAASSC) is open at the University House on campus. Study Spaces NAASSC offers many spaces where students can study both individually or in groups, hold club meetings and receive tutoring. The center can also provide you with access to computers, printers and a space to come drink tea or coffee when you need a study break.

Students from all cultures who are interested in exploring Native American cultures in a cross-cultural setting are encouraged to join this living-learning community. The Native American Living-Learning Community offers a wide range of cultural, social and educational workshops, classes and programs designed to help students learn about Native cultures and Indigenous issues. The Online Advising Student Information System (OASIS) is a central location for students to learn about important deadlines, submit and track forms and petitions and fill out degree worksheets to help plan their coursework. OASIS is also a place where you can schedule advising appointments with your major adviser and monitor your academic progress.

The goal of the campus initiatives is to accurately account for underrepresentation among certain student populations at UC Davis. The Native American Contemplative Garden honors the land’s original inhabitants and educates visitors about its history. Free and open to the public seven days a week, the garden sits on the north bank of the historic Putah Creek channel in the UC Davis Arboretum. The garden features naturally shaped basalt columns representing the Patwin people, their strength and resilience, as well as trees and other plants used by the Patwin people.

The Indigenous Research Center of the Americas (IRCA) is a department-affiliated institute that promotes scholarship and engagement with Indigenous struggles for sovereignty, autonomy and self-determination across the hemisphere. Since its founding in 1991, IRCA has served as a forum for debate, opinion, information and reflection on the situation of Indigenous peoples/Native Americans and their struggle for achieving higher levels of autonomy and securing a future of sovereignty and self-determination by:

Students majoring in Native American Studies (NAS) embark on courses that introduce and approach the study of Indigenous cultures of the Americas through different forms of art, literature, religion, history and identities. The Native American Studies minor provides an overview of Native American experiences in the Americas through six of the NAS major courses. The faculty and staff are dedicated to educating students with a curriculum that incorporates all aspects of the Native American culture.

The Native American Language Center was established to encourage linguistic research on American Indian languages, to foster the intergenerational transfer of language knowledge in Native American communities and to develop a sustained and productive relationship between American Indian linguistic scholarship and the needs and aspirations of Native American people. The center encourages scholars and students, both Native and non-Native, in the task of language preservation and revitalization, while also providing the resources and support for the training of a new and engaged generation of linguists. The Native American Studies (NAS) major offers a comparative, interdisciplinary and hemispheric approach to the study of Indigenous cultures of the Americas. The major integrates faculty specialization in a variety of disciplines, including art, literature, religion, linguistics, history, anthropology, political science, ethnomusicology, performance and dance studies, and women and gender studies. The common thread of these diverse approaches, however, is the recognition of the hemispheric unity of the Indigenous people of the Americas.
