Launched on the eve of the pandemic, UC Berkeley’s Light the Way fundraising campaign quickly took on a new meaning. And the COVID-19 crisis underlined the importance of the Library’s priorities like nothing else could. During the pandemic, we set our treasures free by connecting students with digital versions of course materials — at no cost to them. We provided students with in-person and remote work opportunities, giving them a much-needed financial boost. We filled a void by offering students a place to study — a safe harbor in the heart of campus — by opening Moffitt Library. We provided portals into the past by safely connecting researchers with materials in The Bancroft Library’s collections. And all the while, we focused on our services, adapted for the times. In this issue of Fiat Lux, we explore how the Library is helping us thrive in a new world, in all of these ways — and more.
