Like so many other small businesses, it has been a difficult time for us too. It became obvious in late 2020 that we should drop an issue - as it could have been a burden for us all and in particular for many in our printing/distribution team.

It is quite a different scene now as life is beginning to unlock once again.

I am sure that there will be some new people moving into Thatcham - and to them we wish a special welcome. It could be that they will find some of the pages dedicated to Thatcham life of particular interest.

Recharge and Revive in a Bathroom that Makes you Feel Great.

Functionality comes first in the bathroom, but there’s no reason why you can’t combine efficiency with aesthetics – and gain all the benefits of a space that looks good and feels good at the same time. Here are a dozen ideas to start you off: • Lighting is vital. Check that the bulbs in your light fittings are giving off the light you prefer, though try not to mix different light temperatures (warm or cool) in the same room. Smart bulbs can be switched on and off and the colour temperature changed or dimmed using a remote control or an app. Or, if you have a light switch outside the bathroom door, consider swapping it for a dimmer.

• Sort out your storage. Slim wall cupboards, shelves, ladders, caddies, peg rails and over-door hooks are options, while small storage items – such as wicker baskets, pretty ceramics or bright plastic tubs – bring texture, colour and interest.

• Buy a set of coordinating towels. The fluffier the better, in clean, bright, hotel-white or a colourful pattern.

• If your shower is pathetic, investigate whether you can add a pump to make it more powerful.

• Add plants, large and small, high and low – they usually thrive in a bathroom’s humid atmosphere. Choose pots that complement your overall scheme.

• Get rid of the grunge and scrape out the old grout and silicone between and around your tiles, especially if there’s any mould. Redoing them will make an extraordinary difference.

• Lay a woven cotton or ‘outdoor’ rug on the floor – it can easily be washed or wiped down and will introduce a softer feel, adding colour, pattern and texture, too.

• Replace a shower curtain with a shiny glass shower screen – the look is clean and minimally efficient (and won’t need replacing regularly).

• Change a dated pair of taps for some goodlooking, modern ones. Check that they will suit your water pressure, and make sure the new spout extends the correct amount over the bath or basin – they should reach about as far as the plug hole.

• Jazz up your windows. Options include decorative window film, a beautiful blind (Roman or roller) or some minimal wooden louvres.

• Add a large mirror – it’s not only useful and a focal point but increases the feeling of light and space in the room.

• A chair or stool is always useful in a bathroom, even if it’s just to throw clothes over or to hold soap and books next to the bath.

The Perfect Pear!

They may look a little underwhelming with their crinkly green skin, but avocadolovers know that the fresh creamy flesh is simply delicious and a perfect complement to eggs, smoked bacon, griddled chicken... I could go on.

The avocado pear turns out not to be a pear at all, but a berry. It also turns out to be pretty much the perfect food.

They have a reputation for being 'bad' and high in calories. It's true that a medium-sized avocado contains 30g of fat (as much as a quarterpound burger!) but an avocado's fat is mostly monounsaturated fat (that's the good kind).

Studies have shown that avocado eaters are less at risk for metabolic syndrome, which also puts them at less risk of type-2 diabetes and heart attacks.

Avocados contain folate, an important nutrient for pregnant women and infants, and interestingly have also been shown to slow and possibly reverse memory loss in Alzheimer's patients.

If you are weaning your baby, avocados are a great first food because of their soft texture, and nutritional benefits, like healthy fats for brain development.

Avocados are high in carotenoids so offer skin protection against aging caused by UV damage.

They also have anti-inflammatory properties, which is good for people with rheumatoid arthritis but also because inflammation has been linked to Alzheimer’s, heart attacks, strokes, diabetes, and cancer.

So, check out the avocados on the supermarket shelf, and treat yourself to some green 'n' creamy goodness.

The dangers

of having a DIY Will Having a Will ensures that your loved ones inherit your estate in the way you intend. Simply having a Will however is not always sufficient and it is therefore really important to be aware of the dangers of a poorly drafted DIY Will.

Can you write a Will yourself?

Anyone can write their own Will however there are issues that can arise which could result in your Will being considered invalid and worthless. It is very easy to fall foul of a number of formalities that are needed for Wills to be valid.

A Will dictates how your entire estate is to be distributed – property, financial assets, your business.

Whilst you can legally write your own Will, would you want to risk your estate being left to chance?

Why are DIY Wills so cheap?

DIY Will packages are cheaper because they are often simple templates which you use to complete the blanks yourself. There is no professional advising what you have written in these templates is going to be considered valid. A solicitor will not only ensure your Will is valid from a drafting perspective, but they will also advise you on important matters to consider.

What problems can arise from a DIY Will?

It is vital that a Will complies with various formalities in order for the Probate Registry to issue a Grant of Probate upon someone’s death.

This document enables the executors in the estate to deal with the assets left in the Will.

The Probate Registry will examine any Will that is received to ensure that it is valid and that there are no issues that could call into question the validity of the Will.

There are a number of innocent mistakes that can be made when drafting a Will that could result in a Will being considered partially or fully invalid. However minor these mistakes may appear, these could impact the interpretation of the Will resulting in devastating consequences for your loved ones, especially at a time when they need clarity and certainty more than anything.

In addition, a failure to take legal advice when making a Will could leave your estate vulnerable to claims from those who you do not intend to benefit from your estate. A successful claim could mean that your intended beneficiaries lose out on a significant proportion of their inheritance from your estate.

If my DIY will is considered invalid, will my beneficiaries still inherit my estate?

A DIY Will at worst can be considered completely invalid and your estate would then be distributed according to the intestacy rules. The intestacy rules are set out by statute and will depend upon your surviving family members as to how your estate is distributed. The way in which these rules operate can however be surprising.

Whilst it is vital to put a Will in place, a hasty decision to write your own may not be worth the risk. It is important to seek professional advice from a solicitor who can draft your Will for you, taking into account your own concerns along with a host of other issues, which may have been overlooked in a DIY Will. This will give you that peace of mind which, at the time of losing a loved one, is priceless.

Thatcham Bowling Club Thatcham Bowling Club is an outdoor club playing on grass, it is located behind The Memorial Hall in Brownsfield Road, Thatcham.

The club was formed In 1950 playing on Mondays, Wednesday, Fridays and Saturdays.

Fixtures were arranged with Kingsclere, Stockcross and Hungerford. In 1952 a small pavilion for catering and cloakroom facilities were acquired this was shared with the cricket club. The club is affiliated to both Bowls England and The Royal County of Berkshire Bowling Association.

In 1953 a special meeting was called to decide on the format of the club badge it was agreed that a depiction of the entrance to Reading Abby be used.

The significance being that in 1125 King Henry 1st granted the manor of Thatcham to his foundation of Reading Abbey. Thus all the powerful Abbotts became Lords of the Manor and were exempt taxes and had the right to hold Manor Courts, they were also allowed to hold a Sunday market in the church thus becoming a great rival of nearby Newbury.

Henry 1st issued three charters confirming Thatcham’s market and compelling men of Berkshire to attend.

Newbury got the right hump and came and invaded Thatcham market overturning stalls etc. The King ordered the folk of Newbury to restrain themselves but the animosity between the towns continued.

The King issued in 1222 a further grant for a fair in Thatcham. The rivalry between Thatcham and Newbury still exist but not in the market but on the Bowls green.

The ensuing years have seen the club grow and strengthen, with the gaining of honours at both County and National level. Continued growth of membership to the present day has produced a club with a well appointed clubhouse and a green of excellent quality. 2020 was our 70th anniversary unfortunately celebration of this was curtailed due to Covid 19.

The Bowls season is from April to September and the club is open every day during the season with fixtures against other clubs .National and County competitions, league matches being arranged, or you can just come to the club for a friendly roll up.

Membership is open to both men and women of all ages. Although we have a playing season social functions are held at the club throughout the year some of these can be seen in the photo gallery on the clubs website www.thatchambowlingclub.co.uk, well worth a visit.

If you would like to try Bowling we shall be taking part in Bowls England National open weekend on Friday 28thMay thru to Monday 31st May, all you need to do is to come along to the club where all equipment will be available together with coaching We look forward to welcoming new members to the club.

Locals who Launch

After the events of last year, I found myself for the first time, without a job, but I realised I was not happy with what I had been doing anyway, so took the opportunity to do something that would be more enjoyable and fulfilling for me.

I have always loved being creative, making things and having the sense of achievement from seeing something from start to finish. I also have always loved jewellery, so I put those two loves together and my business idea was under way.

Next came putting this into action - I set up a workshop in my garage - got the basic tools and materials together and went about creating the designs I had in my head. Because I was enjoying what I was doing, I soon became, if I do say so myself, very good!

After a lot of online training, and when I had mastered the basics, it just seemed to click into place and there was no stopping me.

Upskill for Brain Health

Learning new things has all kinds of fringe benefits.

Lots of us began 2021 with the ambition to learn a new skill: beginner’s computer programming, conversational Italian, or how to paint with watercolours maybe. We learn new skills for many reasons. Perhaps we need to improve our computer literacy to gain a promotion, or Italian so we can speak to our new in-laws, or we've always fancied learning to paint. Learning is fun but its benefits go way beyond the actual skill learned, and the skill is irrelevant, whether its crochet or advanced mathematics, the extra benefits are the same.

Positive brain changes - The white matter in our brain is comprised of nerve fibres covered in a fatty sheath called myelin. It is involved in learning and co-ordination of communication between different brain regions.

The more we practice a new skill the more our white matter increases in density, which helps us when we learn other new skills.

Increased learning speed – When brain neurons are stimulated, more neural pathways are formed and the faster our brains process new information. It’s as if 'learning' is a muscle which strengthens as its exercised.

Interconnections - When we learn a new skill our brains draw on information and skills we already possess, and we build on that existing knowledge. But a wide knowledge base also makes it easier for us to learn more new skills.

Increased interestingness! - (Yes, it's a real word!) Well-rounded individuals tend to find it easier to relate to others because a wider knowledge base makes it easier to find things in common and thus make friends.

Beat boredom - Repetition can quickly become monotonous. Following the same routine every night, 'supper, bath, TV, bed' makes it easy to become bored. Learning new things breaks the cycle of monotony and gives our brain something to do.

Increased adaptability - Learning new things physically alters our brains in such a way that our outlook and perceptions change. These alterations make it easier for us to adapt to sudden life changes, like a global pandemic for instance! Adapting to change is a skill, and the more varied our life experiences are, the easier it is to draw on them and adjust Prevent cognitive decline - Learning origami doesn’t mean we won’t get dementia. There are many types of dementia and the causes are nuanced. But there are many studies which suggest that people who learn new skills are less likely to experience cognitive decline including dementia. Mental decline is linked to demyelination of our brain. People who actively learn new skills are not giving their brains a chance to demyelinate, and their neural pathways are primed to create workarounds if some area of the brain does begin to fail. The key seems to be to learn things outside of our comfort zone, so if you are a knitter, don't choose to learn crochet, which is similar, choose Russian, or salsa dancing, or the ukulele instead, subjects which push you out of your comfort zone, but (importantly) which you actually want to learn and will enjoy.

Choose Your Technology Carefully The tools and software your workplace chooses may differ. Many businesses love Microsoft and their Teams software for example and others are dedicated to all things Apple so opt for officially licensed Apple alternatives. Your options will be somewhat governed by your workplace, but you can always make suggestions and see if there is a more effective option worth trying.

Your home is your place to relax and unwind so turning it into your workspace too can be a little difficult to get used to. Ensuring you have the right tech in place so you can work without interruption or difficulty will help make the whole process more manageable and the right software will also ensure you can easily sync when you’re in the office too.

Buy-to-let remains an attractive investment vehicle for many, but it’s an ever-changing market. The key is understanding the risks and responsibilities rather than thinking of it as a sure-fire route to riches.

The appeal is obvious. The respective market conditions mean rents on a property commonly exceed mortgage costs, leaving headroom for a healthy profit even after maintenance costs. Buy-to-let landlords also have the potential profit from long-term house price rises if and when they sell.

You’ll also need to take professional advice on the effects of capital gains tax if and when you sell the property. Rates and allowances are both under ongoing reviews, while the rules on what happens if you lived in the property before renting (or had a lodger) are changing.

Restrict access to health-related news It’s important to keep up to date, but more than a few of us have found that the need to check and recheck has become compulsive, feeding our anxiety. It’s better for our mental health that we if we limit the amount of time we spend reading or watching news to one or two periods per day.

Try not to seek constant reassurance It’s a natural human response to seek reassurance.

Reassurance makes us feel calmer for a while.

It’s difficult to provide reassurance in a situation where no-one really knows all the facts and things change from day to day. In this situation our brain can create a feedback cycle where we seek reassurance then have to re-seek it as the news shifts and makes us anxious again. In this way we

Reasons to remortgage Remortgaging is the process of getting a new mortgage on your existing home either with your current or new lender.

More often than not, the main reason to remortgage is to lower your monthly repayments and save yourself some money, but it’s not the only one.

Parents and grandparents with cash to spare will often want to help the younger generation. They have plenty of options, but it’s key to consider the tax and risk implications.

FINANCIAL GIFT With a straightforward financial gift, the recipient won’t have to pay any income tax on it but it can affect inheritance tax. The simple principle is that any money you give as a gift will still count towards the value of your estate (and potentially attract inheritance tax) except in specific circumstances.

One exemption is time: if you live more than seven years after making the gift, it’s not counted towards your estate. If you die between three and seven years after the gift, a special lower inheritance tax rate applies depending on the precise time. If you die less than three years after the gift, it’s covered by the normal inheritance tax rate.

You also have an annual exemption that means the first £3,000 you give away each year isn’t counted as part of your estate.

A separate one-off exemption covers a gift for a wedding or civil ceremony: £5,000 for a gift to your child, £2,500 to your grandchild and £1,000 to anyone else.

SCHOOL FEES School fees for a grandchild are also exempt, though this only applies if you make regular payments and it’s clear you can afford them. Finally you can give up to £250 a year to any individual who isn’t covered by any other exemptions.

SAVINGS PLAN One alternative to an immediate gift is to put money into a savings plan, for example with the aim of helping the child with university costs when they turn eighteen. A Junior ISA is a way to do this without attracting tax on the savings or growth. It comes in both cash and stocks-and-shares versions.

Only a parent or guardian can open a Junior ISA, but anyone can put money into the Junior ISA once it’s open. Legally the money belongs to the child, though they can’t withdraw it until they turn eighteen.

FIRST HOME Perhaps the most common way to financially help a child or grandchild is with their first home purchase. If you provide the money for a deposit, it has the same rules regarding inheritance tax as any other gift. You’ll have to confirm you are not claiming any financial interest and you may have to provide bank statements for money-laundering checks.

You can act as a mortgage guarantor in which you become responsible for the payments if your children or grandchildren fall behind.

That’s a risky proposition and you should never consider it without expert advice. That’s also true of a family deposit mortgage where you put the deposit money up front. If the borrower makes all the scheduled payments for a set period (often five years), you’ll get the money back, sometimes with interest as well.

It’s also worth exploring a family offset mortgage. This lets you put savings into a special account, temporarily lowering the figure used to calculate interest charges.

Use credit cards – Yes, you read that correctly. If used wisely they can be a helpful cash-management tool.

With some cards you get cash back for spending.

So, by putting your regular expenditure, such as groceries, on your card you can earn money. Only do this if you are prepared to pay the balance off in full after the grace period (generally 30 days).

Being in debt is stressful and it’s easier to get into debt than out of it.

Help yourself with these five top tips.

Budget – It sounds obvious, but an astonishing number of us don’t know what we actually spend each month. For two months write down every outgoing and you might be surprised at how much of cash you fritter away.

Make a list of regular commitments - utility bills, mortgage, outstanding loans etc.; a list of necessary evils - petrol, train tickets etc; a list of desirables - holidays, salon trips etc.; and a list of non-essentials.

Boost your cash – This can be done in two ways: Cut all unnecessary expenditure or increase your income. It might not be a good time economically to ask for a pay-rise, but could you take on some extra work in return for a little more in your pay packet? What about selling

The History of Chess

The game of chess is nearly 1,500 years old and is as popular today as it has ever been. More than 600 million people play worldwide.

It is believed that chess originated in India around 500AD, with a strategic military board game called chaturanga. From India the game moved to Persia (Iran) where it was known as shatranj, and from there it spread through the Muslim empire. The oldest recorded game is a tenth-century match played between a Baghdad historian and his pupil.

From the Arab world, the game travelled across North Africa to the Moors, who brought it to Spain and Europe in the twelfth century.

Very old chess sets exist, such as the twelfth century glazed pottery fritware shatranj set in the New York Metropolitan Museum, and the Isle of Lewis set made from walrus ivory that can be found in the National Museum of Scotland, and is also from the twelfth century.

Over time, chess pieces changed. The bishop and rook (or castle) appeared. The queen became the most powerful piece on the board and the rules of chess evolved to those similar to the game we play today.

The oldest book to explain these rules is a Spanish one: Repetición de Amores y Arte de Ajedrez (Repetition of Love and the Art of Playing Chess) by Luis Ramirez de Lucena published in 1497.

There are also those who believe another game may have influenced our modern-day chess. At the same time that chaturanga was being played in India, a strategic game called tafl – which is old Norse for ‘board’ – was being played by the ancient Nordic and Celtic people.

Tafl was played on a chequered nine-by-nine game board with two armies of uneven numbers – one side of which were the attackers and the other the defenders. Rather than facing each other, the two opposing sides were positioned in the middle and around the edge of the board, and there was only one king and a castle at the centre.

The Romantic Style of chess was played from the 1500s until the 1800s. It centred around short tactical manoeuvres rather than long-term strategic ones.

The modern chess set was patented in 1849. A design by Englishman Nathaniel Cook, it was favoured by the world’s best player at the time, Howard Staunton. Following his endorsement it became known as the Staunton pattern. To this day, only Staunton pattern sets are allowed in international competition.

In 1886 the first official World Chess Championships were held and the World Chess Federation (FIDE) was founded at the beginning of the twentieth century.

With the digital age, it was possible to mathematically examine all possible moves and outcomes by computer, which eventually led to a computer first beating a world chess champion in 1997.

Today, chess competitions are a recognised sport. You can now buy all sorts of novelty chess sets with characters ranging from The Simpsons to Game of Thrones.

Chess is so respected in Russia that it has been taught in primary schools since 2017.

Many people buy or adopt a cat as company and but forget that it works both ways. If you’d miss your cat if they aren’t there, remember they’ll miss you too. However, unlike dogs you don’t usually take a cat with you, so prepare well in advance for times when you are away from home.

For short breaks – whether a day at work or a weekend away – our feline friends are quite independent, especially when given access to a cat flap and timed feeders. However, some animals will express feeling lonely by behaving out of character. For example, they could start urinating in the house or spending long periods of time away from home.

The easiest way to address this is to find a friendly neighbour to pop in once a day. Even five minutes fussing and attention can be enough to make your pet feel calmer. But if you are often

away, a professional pet sitter might be a better option. Either way, do make sure you have introduced them several times before they attend to your cat without you being present.

For longer trips away, it’s more likely you’ll need to opt for a cattery. Cats can be sensitive to the pre-holiday stress though, so rather than dropping them off last minute, build in an extra day to give them chance to settle – plus you’ll have one less thing to worry about as you rush out the door.

Stress & Anxiety

Are you feeling stressed and anxious about the future?

During the pandemic, we are experiencing more stress and anxiety than ever before. This is caused by uncertainty and ever-changing information.

According to the mental health charity Mind, 60% of adults said their mental health became worse during lockdown.

Stress and anxiety can manifest itself in many different ways. Physical symptoms can include an increased heart rate or muscle tension, ‘jelly’ legs or tingling in the hands and feet, breathing too heavily or dizziness.

You may experience feelings that you might lose control, faint, think people are looking at you and noticing your anxiety. Dave Smithson from Anxiety UK says “Those who are usually outgoing may become withdrawn or those who are reserved may become erratic. Everyone is different and anxiety can be triggered by a range of things.”

Other symptoms can include lack of concentration, catastrophic thoughts, poor memory, excessive alcohol intake, under or overeating, a short temper and tearfulness. A key indicator is blowing things out of proportion. As Lorraine Collins, psychodynamic counsellor, psychotherapist, Cognitive Behavioural Therapist and member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP), says “If you’re stressed, how you view situations can become altered and distorted due to the brain not being able to process information in a more balanced way. It can also be a cry for help in communicating distress that can be difficult to put into words, so is ‘acted out’ by slamming doors, banging around, road rage and so on.”

How To Manage Stress and Anxiety The good news is there are plenty of practical and useful tools to manage anxiety and reduce stress: • Getting back into nature is a great way of calming your anxiety. This can be a local park, woodland, nature reserve or your garden. Lorraine says “You can practice naming what’s around you, the things you see and hear, and this will interrupt the constant looping of anxious thoughts.”

• Looking after mind and body: “Go to bed at a reasonable time without screens and mobiles or other things that will decrease the winding down time we need to settle into a relaxed state and leave the day behind,” says Lorraine. “Watch your diet, as excessive caffeine and refined sugars will only stimulate an already stimulated body and mind.”

• Learning to relax: relaxation techniques can include exercises to release the tension in your body by easing your muscles. The Mind web site lists plenty of options.

• Connecting with other people: “Plan to have regular chats with friends and family over the phone,” says Stephen Buckley from Mind.

“This is a vital way of maintaining wellbeing.”

• Sharing the problem: talking to someone you trust about what is making you stressed can be helpful. If this isn’t possible, you could call a confidential helpline such as Mind’s Infoline or those run by Anxiety UK and the Samaritans.

If these self-care techniques don’t work, it’s best to talk to your GP about treatment options.

The return of brighter days means you’ll notice the windows need a good clean, and there are plenty of gadgets to help. Out of Lockdown?

As I write it seems to be yet another version of a very strange time. Vaccination is going well, we hear – I have just had my first jab, and had only a minor reaction, though I’m still a little tired. I get that feeling that “soon we’ll be out of this, and all will be well,” as government spokespeople are still advising caution.

Last week I met someone who had barely been out at all in the last twelve months, who was herself getting organised to take Easter gifts to others in our community who might be a bit isolated or lonely or just in need of a lift. It reminded me how good-hearted some people are, and how our community has pulled together so much: how Thatcham Town 48

Council has helped people to keep in touch – it has been a real community effort, but sometimes people like me, who have more conversations than most, can forget just how lonely the pandemic has been for others.

I sat outside St Mary’s church this morning, and one of the people who stopped for a brief chat had not seen her parents for over a year – they are in a different country, and goodness knows when travel will be properly possible again. It was sunny today and people were out and about, enjoying the crosses

And that has got me thinking how lonely was the experience of Good Friday – it was festival time, but Jesus was abandoned by his friends: there were celebrations, but Jesus was not part of them – his two companions,

For Christians, fortunately, that is not the end of the story – there is a good and hopeful ending: Jesus’ followers, locked down at home do have an experience of new life beyond their temporary, but deep experience of despair. And as we see the spring flowers in bloom and rejoice in sunshine after winter and give thanks for an effective vaccine, that is what we are all hoping to celebrate.

But it would be so easy to rejoice in the end of lockdown, and forget the people who are still on their own, and who may be much more cautious about getting out again, or even less able than they were to get about. As we face the task

of rebuilding our community this year, let’s take our lead from the spring sunshine, which warms every corner of our world, and make sure that, as we come out of lockdown ourselves, we don’t leave anyone behind or forgotten.

The longer-standing residents of Thatcham still proudly talk of “the village”. That memory expresses something important about the community we still aspire to be. I am looking forward with hope to a summer of freedom – let’s make sure we don’t leave anyone out!

1. Preheat the oven to 170C / fan 150C / gas mark 3. Grease a 900g (2lb) loaf tin and line the base and two long sides with baking paper.

2. Place the butter, sugar, flour, eggs and the orange rind and juice in a bowl. Beat with an electric whisk until thoroughly combined. Toss together the ground almonds and apricots and fold into the mixture.

3. Spoon the mixture into the prepared tin and gently level the surface. Bake for 50 minutes - 1 hour 10 minutes until risen and golden and a skewer inserted into the centre comes out clean. Cool for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack and leave to cool completely. Serve dusted with icing sugar and decorated with the extra orange zest.

Loss in Lockdown and Beyond

What have we lost in the last 12 months? The most obvious answer might be the death of a loved one. While this is can be hard to manage in ‘normal’ times with the restrictions and complications that Covid has thrown up it is even more difficult, so my thoughts are with you if you have been bereaved because of this hideous disease.

There is however, so much more to think about when we think of the losses we are all experiencing in these strange times; It is not only death but the loss of intimacy, friendships, jobs, contact with elderly parents and grown up children, grandchildren – the list feels almost endless as I begin to write this.

The pleasure we might get from sitting in a café with a coffee or in a bar with a glass of wine or a beer and just being, watching the world go by and chatting to those around you. These simple activities seem distant memories and something we have lost – we can grieve this – we can feel sad that we cannot do this, it is okay to feel that pain. It might seem ‘silly’ or ‘unnecessarily’ sad but social contact is such a vital part of our mental health.

Loss is also felt when children grow older and move away; perhaps to university, moving in with a partner and buying their own property or moving away for work. When a child leaves home there is a gap where once was that person who irritated you, made you laugh, made you cry, made you proud and now they are gone. Sure, you will see them next week or next month and you don’t have to do their washing anymore, but they are gone. An empty room upstairs, no more loud music / tv. Something is lost to you.

Often, in my experience, parents feel they should only be happy that their child leaves home - a sign of good parenting that their offspring has been able to break away; but you’re left with that hole in the home. It is okay to feel that pain.

It might be the sibling that we never had when all our friends had someone else to share the blame with at home, or play with or even fight with. The job we didn’t get, the house purchase that fell through... another list that seems endless. Again, it is okay to feel that pain.

I am often left wondering why we (as a society) are so stoic – that stiff upper lip – we bottle up all our hurt and pain from those losses and wonder why we have a migraine or suffer with depression.

The variety of symptoms we can experience from bottling up those emotions is vast, if only we could feel ‘stoic’ enough to tell someone, to share that hurt and pain to allow ourselves to feel that loss, however “silly” we think it might be.

I seem to frequently end these musings with something along the lines of – we are all human, we all feel pain, hurt (and joy and pride) - yet we don’t often share it with others and if we were able to talk to someone about it, they would get to talk about theirs with you (without getting competitive please! No ones loss is worse than someone else’s, it is just different) and so a new cycle begins where we can talk to each other, support each other and grow from those experiences.

Now more than ever we are all experiencing losses, now more than ever we would benefit from sharing those experiences with someone, it might need to be by phone or ‘zoom’, but it will still help you and the other person too.

So, I wish you well and hope you find someone to support you in your losses, and you can support them in theirs, however hard that might seem at this time.

Uncommon Type – Tom Hanks Uncommon Type is Tom Hanks’ collection of seventeen short stories. Most offer a slice of American life, whether it’s from the viewpoint of a ten-year-old boy or a war veteran. Each one references a typewriter and some characters appear in more than one story. Other than that, the stories are very diverse, ranging from one about a bowling whizz who becomes an unwilling celebrity, to time-travelling sci-fi.

Neil Patrick Harris – The Magic Misfits 1 & 2 The How I Met Your Mother star has written several books, including a choose your own adventure-style autobiography. His children’s series follows a street magician who teams up with other like-minded kids to stop villains in their tracks.

Aimed at children aged eight and up, The Magic Misfits series is ideal for fans of Pseudonymous Bosch and Lemony Snicket. It’s very well-written, very different and very funny.

Because of You – Dawn French While Dawn French’s latest novel contains a dash of humour, it’s also heart wrenching, dealing as it does with stillbirth, abduction and grief. Two women give birth at the same hospital. Only one mother leaves with a baby. As the baby, Minnie, grows into a teenager, she becomes pregnant herself and discovers that everything she thought she knew may well be based on a lie.

A Bright Ray of Darkness – Ethan Hawke The actor Ethan Hawke has returned to fiction writing after a break of almost two decades. A Bright Ray of Darkness draws on his own experiences and tells the story of a celebrated actor, William, whose personal life is crumbling around him, much to the delight of the press. William turns to the theatre, throwing himself into the world of Henry IV. A fascinating glimpse into the world of acting, privilege and fame.

Troy – Stephen Fry The third book in Stephen Fry’s series retelling the Greek myths centres on probably the most famous myth of them all – the battle of Troy. Whether you think you know the full story or can just recall something about a queen called Helen and a wooden horse, this book is well worth a read. Fry really brings the tale to life, adding his own wry humour to the mix.
