A New Standard of Excellence

For the Visual & Performing Arts 2014-2015

Academy of the Arts The UAFS Academy of the Arts is a premier center for the visual and performing arts, serving over 500 students from 22 school districts and 75 schools each year. Classes in music, theatre, dance, and art, as well as private music lessons are available for enrollees from preschool through high school. Established in 2006, the academy begins its ninth year with a professional faculty of 30. Activities abound every day after school and on weekends at the academy. Our highly trained faculty works with each student to develop artistic and social skills, instill self-esteem and encourage self-expression. Special highlights of the academy experience include master classes with guest artists, opportunities to perform and tour, tickets to performances and productions, and, at the end of it all, a university transcript.

The mission of the academy is to be a leader in the visual and performing arts, and serve as a role model for young people. We are committed to providing exceptional training through a learning-centered environment with the goal of improving students both artistically and academically.

From Dr. Paul & Janice Beran Janice and I are pleased to support and endorse the Academy of the Arts. Learning about the arts and participating in the arts should be an essential element in a child’s life. Research shows that children and youth who participate in the arts are better students in all the other areas, especially math and science. So not only is learning and participating in the arts just plain fun, children and youth reap benefits that will help them the rest of their lives.

UAFS and the Fort Smith community are fortunate to have a dedicated and knowledgeable faculty in the Academy of the Arts program. They are dedicated to helping the children and youth they teach to appreciate the importance of the arts in their lives. The academy is also proud of the relationship it has with the UAFS collegiate music and theatre programs. As the Academy of the Arts grows, it is our hope that even more children will have the opportunity to participate, to improve their artistic skills, and to develop a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

Paul B. Beran, Ph.D. Chancellor

Fundraisers & Special Events Each year, the Academy of the Arts hosts several special events that serve as fundraisers to benefit its students. Gospel Fest has been one of the biggest academy events, but other effective fundraisers include estate sales, dinners, concerts, a 5K run/walk, and talent competitions. In addition, groups of academy students lead fundraising events such as bake sales, silent auctions and car washes. Money raised by students is used for tours, and for travel to special competitions and festivals. While fundraisers help support specific programs and purposes, private gifts are vitally important to the overall operation of the academy. Thanks to the generosity of private contributors, the academy can reach more students through the arts and prepare more students for college.

Where Diversity & Excellence Come Together! All scholarships to the academy are awarded through the Kaleidicon Scholarship Program. Students may apply for a scholarship upon entering any program. Scholarships are limited and given on a semester basis. Application forms are available on the academy website.

The National Guild of Community Schools of the Arts is America’s service association for community arts education organizations that provide access to high-quality sequential instruction so that all people may participate in the arts according to their interests and abilities. In concert with this dynamic network, the guild researches and promotes best practices, provides opportunities for professional development and dialogue, advocates for broad access, and makes grants to the field.
