By the time you read this, I’ll be winding down a full weekend of post-Thanksgiving shopping! I’m just guessing I’ll be a tad bit tired. That also means that the holiday season is in full swing and that gets me fired up! It’s been a busy season already, to say the least. October is when it gets really jamming here at Local Life. Planning our first annual Pooch Parade and then right into the Burleson Wine and Beer Crawl. On that same weekend we had the Holiday Bazaar put on by the Burleson Power of Heels team. Love those ladies and their hard work! My guy’s birthday weekend fell on that same date and then of course, time to prep for Turkey Day! It’s a lot to handle with a small team, but we got through it without a hitch. On top of all of this, we’ve still got to produce a new magazine each month. It certainly takes a village and I am proud of mine. I want to take a second and praise a few key team members who have been especially helpful to me this year. Thank you, Jordan DeWald, my Business Manager and basic extension of myself, for tackling all of the dirty work. She keeps the day to day going and knocks down the fun stuff, like paperwork and billing. You work hard and always have wonderful ideas. Thank you, Marty Yawnick, our Creative Director for always making Local Life pretty to look at, while maintaining professionalism. You are a true artist who’s great at your craft and your positive attitude is a blessing to our team. Thank you, Christie Brown, for the delicious treats, email management, and social engagement online. I think I should really just thank you for being my shoulder to vent on when I need to scream a little! And I can’t forget my husband, John. Thank you for always being available for those last minute writing/editing tasks that you’re so quick to produce. Love you all! You keep our little engine running and it impresses me daily what we’re able to accomplish with such a small team. No rest for the weary! November is over and that means that Christmas in Old Town is right around the corner. I’m excited to see this event grown larger than last year and expect a great turnout. I hope to see you all on the town during this community event. A final thank you to each of our readers. Without you, we wouldn’t have a job. 2016 has been good to me, personally. Emotionally, it’s been better than I’ve had in a few years. Please remember as we all get stressed and hectic this time of year that you never really know what someone is dealing with. Holidays are key reminders of loved ones lost that are no longer with us and many struggle to cope with that void. Be kind to one another and consider their perspective. Spread the love this holiday season. I’m sure we could all use a little extra! Happy Holidays to all from our little family at Local Life Magazine!

Tis the Season…

For Giving! by John Griffin

L

et me first clarify, I love getting presents! Who doesn’t? Free crap that I probably didn’t need but really want just somehow makes my day. Plus, it sort of makes you feel good to know that someone cares enough to take time out of their busy schedule and think of you. I am fortunate. I am blessed to have a wonderful family and a large circle of friends whom I love, dearly. I took a Facebook quiz the other day on how to tell if you are one of the “fortunate ones”. Not knowing what to expect, the first question went something

like this, “Do you have a roof over your head and working heat and air?” Next, “Do you have someone that cares for you?” You can probably assume how the rest of it went. It’s a simple quiz poised to make us think. And, I did. I thought about how my perspective has changed over the years so dramatically. You see, when I was a kid I didn’t grow up with the same luxuries my children have. Not even close. We didn’t spend often on items that weren’t necessities. Brand name

6 Use your smartphone for this issue’s coupons online at www.LocalLifeTX.com

and trendy just weren’t qualifiers for the types of items we bought. Restaurants? Now, that was a big deal if we got to go to a restaurant! It was a bigger deal if that restaurant was a Chili’s or whatever the equivalent was back then. Today, we go to Chili’s on the reg and it’s usually because we’re just too whipped to cook something at the house. My kids eat out at least 4 or 5 times a week and my wife is a wonderful cook. Don’t even get me started on the “things” they own – that WE’VE bought for them. Are they spoiled? Maybe a little. I don’t think much more than the next kid. And, we do our best to instill a sense of appreciation for the things they have, but times are just a little different. I don’t think it makes it right or wrong, just different. Growing up the way I did, I never really thought I was poor, by definition. Looking back, I see that we didn’t have near as much as some, but then again I had more than others. What I do know is there are so many on this Earth that truly don’t have much. They don’t have the so-called “necessities”. Simple things like soap. Clothes that fit properly and that they are the first owner. Warm jackets. Actual meals that are nutritionally sound and good for their development as youth. This isn’t a pressure piece, I promise. It’s more of a call to attention, if you will. I say give to your children whatever you feel is appropriate. You’re the parent and you should make the call. But also, make sure they know that there are others out there that are less fortunate. I truly believe that for a long time my kids just assumed everyone got the same things from their parents as they did. Seeing them discover children with needs not getting met was eye opening for them, heart-breaking for us all, and overall

life-changing for my family. I’m glad they’ve matured in that area a bit, although they still have a lot to experience. Given that this is the season to be thankful and the season for giving, I thought I would encourage you all to make some simple plans to show your children how they can give back to their community and touch others who may be less fortunate than them. It’s an opportunity to bless others, as well as make a significant mark on their young hearts that they might possibly carry with them for a lifetime. You don’t have to be wealthy to give. That, my friends, is lesson #1. All you really need is desire and commitment. There are so many ways you can give to your community as a family in our local area, but I wanted to list a few specific ones to save you the Google search. Check out these below, or seek out opportunities on your own. Either way, please take a moment this season to teach your family how to place others before themselves, if only on occasion.

Beautiful Feet Ministries Originally coined, the Church of the Streets, this ministry was created in 1981 in Fort Worth, TX. I recently joined my oldest daughter and her friends serving on a Sunday morning and was floored by how much good this ministry is doing for the homeless community, locally. Children are encouraged to come donate their time by either helping serve meals, handing out clothing and toiletry items, and a host of other things including just having some good old-fashioned conversation with people who are in a rough spot. www. thefeet.org Local Life | DECEMBER 2016 7

The Burleson Animal Shelter We’ve got some furry friends out there, too, that need a little TLC. Although, kids need to be accompanied by an adult, donating time to our local animal shelter is a great way for kids to give back. They can serve as dog walkers, help tidy up the facility, or just provide some quality time with an animal that may not get as much love as a normal pet. Call ahead and find out how your family can lend an extra paw. www.burlesontx.com > Search Animal Shelter.

Rachel's Hope Resale It could be as simple as taking a Saturday morning and going through your closets as a family to find items you feel comfortable donating. Or, you can contact them and schedule some time to go help the volunteer staff sort through all of the items that need organizing. It’s a great organization and they can always use an extra set of hands. Children must be accompanied by an adult. www. rachelshoperesale.org

Crowley House of Hope Similar to the larger Beautiful Feet Ministry, CHH is doing wonderful things right here in our backyard. They provide meals, clothing, shelter, medical care, financial assistance and companionship to families in need. Children love to help others, but it especially makes an impact when they help other children. There are so many opportunities to volunteer that I would just encourage you to go to the website and see for yourself. www. crowleyhouseofhope.org

•••

I could obviously make this list very long. There is no shortage of people in need and they are abundant right here in our own community. The point of this message is to say, get involved. Do it as a family. There are certainly others that I know of and I’m sure many of you could add to this list. Reaching out to your local church is a good place to start. Your kids may balk a little at first because they’d rather spend their Saturday doing something “cooler”. I promise you they will thank you down the road. The Internet is always a great resource and I’ve found 3 websites that do a great job matching families with outreach activities and projects: www.DoingGoodTogether.org www.VolunteerMatch.org www.Family-to-Family.org > click “Kids Helping Kids”

Never apologize because you are more fortunate than someone else. Simply be grateful. Appreciate the things you do have. But also, when and where you can, find a moment to give back and give time to those who aren’t as lucky as you. Find time to give to those who may not have worked as hard as you. You see, it’s not about who “deserves” to be treated well. We all do. Every single human on the planet. Even the ones who haven’t figured out how to do for themselves. Do it because you can and you want to. Most importantly, teach your children to be the kind of worldly citizen that knows and appreciates the value of helping others. I’ve saved the best for last. While it’s a wonderful thing to help another, it’s even more satisfying to do it with the ones you love most. The memories and quality time you’ll achieve committing to acts of service are absolutely priceless. From my family and I, we thank you all in advance!

Shamblin’s Lawn and Tree Service When Patrick Shamblin started mowing lawns back in 2006, he did the only two things that made sense to him: (1) work hard (2) and take great care of your clients. That simple, but effective business practice has served him well over the past decade, where a little yard mowing business has blossomed into one of the area’s finest lawn & tree service around. Shamblin’s Lawn and Tree Service proudly serves Burleson, Crowley, Joshua, Mansfield, Fort Worth, Arlington and all surrounding areas to the community that Patrick grew up in. Things have grown quite a bit since 2006, but you can rest assured that Patrick is still in charge and holding true to his two keys to success. We asked Patrick to share with us his favorite part about owning this business. Quite simply he told us, “This is where I grew up. The fact that I get to lend a hand in taking

care of the community I’ve always known is a blessing to us. Even better, my job is to make things look better and be safer. The fact that I get to add to the beautification and safety of my hometown is a reward within itself.” Patrick’s work ethic is shared with his team and his commitment to quality can be seen by the equipment they use. They use only the best equipment and ensure everything is maintained properly at all times, for every job. Shamblin’s Lawn and Tree Service is dedicated to customer satisfaction. Being that this is a family owned and operated entity, their name and reputation mean everything to them. When charging to find what separates them from the competition, we thought we’d just go with what his client’s say. Quality of work and reliability is what stands out the most. It’s the ol’ “do what you say you’re going to do

This is where I grew up. The fact that I get to lend a hand in taking care of the community I’ve always known is a blessing to us. when you say you’re going to do it” mantra. If Patrick says he’ll be there at 8 o’clock, then you can stand by the door at 7:59. That’s just how business should be done. Their services include tree trimming and removal, stump grinding, cleaning and clear up, firewood and mulch, and of course scheduled mowing – from manicured lawns to the largest of fields. Give Patrick and his team a call if you’re looking for a hometown servicer who stands on the shoulders of quality and integrity. I’m sure you’ll be glad you did!
